hello, i am looking to purchase new front and rear speakers for my 95 SE. i love listening to music, but i dont want a heavy duty system that weighs a ton so i opt for just speakers. my question is, what speakers do everyone have and what "makes" a good speaker?? i dont want to just waltz into best buy or frys and by just anything. thanks guys!!

what is frys?

Anywho, I bought my speakers online from a site that doesn't exist anymore. :D

I have Infinity speakers all around:

3-way Kappa 63.5i (6.5-6.75) in the front

2-way Reference 62.5i (6.5-6.75) in the rear

This setup give you nice, crisp, CLEAR music with just enough bass (will upgrade though). With my headunit it sounds focking awesome. I plan to buy an Infinity Basslink....which is a 10" self-powered sub that is really compact and proves good amounts of bass.

Fry's is this HUGE warehouse kinda SUPERSTORE. from computers to car stereos to Household appliances. i think frys has really good prices.

my s14 has locations for door speakers and a seperate tweeter location, get a good set of components for the front, might as well use the space, if you have them, and a decent set of coaxials in the rear for fill. if you dont already have the space, install them your self in the a-pillar, not too hard. and be WAY happy with the quality

also, are you going to to be running these new speakers of the stock deck, aftermarket deck or an amp. great speakers with stock deck power will sound not much better than stock.

Pioneer 3 or 4 way all the way around, you can also build in the dash some tweeters.

see if the deck has RCA outputs, also wattage like 50X4 is what i would get if i were you.

generally Pioneer deck is what i would get. or if you wanna pay extra for alpine go with it.

speakers:
Pioneer 3 ways. i had em in all of the cars i ever had and very decent. when you select em tho, look at RMS.

you want the speakers to handle around 200wats if you gonna add amps/sub later on.

dont go by peak watts, they mean pretty much nothing. go by rms. cheapest route, get a good deck, its the focal point of the whole system, with at least 2 sets of rca outputs, presumable 3. try to get one with 4v out puts, get a four channel amp, set of compenents and a set of 2 or 3 ways. pioneers would work fine, i would recommend infinity kappa components. run the fron components off 2 channels of the amp, rear speakers of the deck, they are there just for fill, and bridge the last 2 channels of the amp to run a single 10 or 12

again, this is the cheapest way, to get real good sound, if you want to pay more, youll get more, will one sub be enough bass for you?

I have 4 6'1/2" inch type R speakers in my car before i installed my type R sub and they were incredible. They had some bass and were extremely loud and high quality, they sounded great. Thats what I recommend.

I'd recommend Infinity. Any of their products you should be happy with. I had 4 Reference 6.5" coaxials and they sounded great with a JL 12" W3v2 in a ported box with ~300watts to the sub. I also had a Alpine CDA-7892. If you have the money or can find a good deal GET AN ALPINE HEAD UNIT!!!! They are the best sounding head-units I've heard and I've use a bunch of head units with my setup. Pioneer, Kenwood, JVC, Panasonic, etc. I asked to use my friends whenever they get a new one to see how it will sound in mine then I install it for them for free.:p

wow, its great to see so many other audio fans, car and music go hand in hand, i agree with alpine, that was my first deck, ive also had clarion, and pioneer decks, as well my s13 has a jvc, i think.

when buying a deck, dont fall into the trap of pretty screens and el graphics. your music will only sound as good as the deck

for example, a few years ago, i had a competion system in my 1g dsm, it was hitting almost 153db, alpine deck. my car was broken into, alarm went off, before i got out there they jacked my deck, nothing else though, well, i ended up using a tape deck for the following iasca event. hit only 147.something, made that much of a differerance.

alpine decks, i love em, they prioritize functionality and sound quality over cool displays, but they still look great

i've got kenwood kevlar woven 4x6" 2 ways upfront with JBL kevlar woven 6 1/2" woofers in the rear deck for my 92 coupe. wioth a kenwood excelon mP3 player
pretty nice setup.. havent installed yet
but my friend haas similar setup and it sounds great.. hes got a clarion deck though.

i didnt say "peak" dude. i said RMS if you want the system to be bangin' later on, better worry that your speakers can handle it, thats why i said if speakers can handle 200 watts(amp'ed) go with it.

i have to agree tho, peak watts dont mean ****. thats why you only look at RMS when you buy, aside from the brand :)

true, you didnt say peak wattage, but show me one deck pushing 50x4 RMS. most decks pushing 50x4 are also pushing 20-24 wrms

dont worry about what your speakers are rated at, they are rated at conservatively, the best system i ever heard was with a 3-way focal set up, mid bass, mid range and a tweeter, all rated at 20-80 watts rms, but they were being pushed at 230 watts per channel. sounded incredible. perfect imaging. if youre afraid of blowing something. thats why there is a volume and a gain knob

this is a lot of good info!! now i would like to narrow down my decision, respectively. First of all, let me fill u guys in on exactly what i want........

I listen to all kinds of music but primarily Hip Hop, therefore i want good bass, but still want high treble (For the lady w/ R&B hehe)

And since i value performance as well, i need to make a compromise, and my comp is i want to keep the car light so i onl want to get a deck and the regular 4 speaker upgrade.

and from what i read, i must choose the deck with the most RMS and at least 2 RCA jacks JUST ino case i plan to have any future upgrades. and the S14 speakers are 6 1/2" correct?? and should i just get all 4 3 way speakers? i dont plan to do anything with my tweeters. and lastly, waht is the silver mechanism under my rear deck that everything plugs into? do i need it, can i replace it??

thanks again!

ok, my setup is 7' in the fronts, and 5 1/2 in the back ( i think, not sure but go to soundomain.com to see what CAN fit).
you can also get some tweeters and build em in the dash, thats what im gonna do. but you dont need them that much, just extra output for high pitch tremble.

I had some mb quart components which sounded pretty good. IMO, s14 speaker locations for the front aren't very good, so i would recommend getting some tweeters at the least. You should also get a good deck as well. I had an eclipse, which worked good, but a little too flashy. If you want something more conventional, get nakamichi. that's just my opinion.

i had planet audio's in my civic but im going to put them in my 240
i think they are by far one of the best , they have the tweater on a seperate mount no wire through the cone (they hit like subs ) all 4
there a good buy and will last long because they use carbon kevlar cone material :D

Focal is VERY GOOD SH*T. I'm gonna try to fit 7' Focal's in mine. I recommended Infinity because they are the cheaper route to go. Focal does sound better but they cost more. If you can find a good deal on them then go with that. Also, with an Alpine head-unit it would sound INCREDIBLE!!!!:D If you are thinkin bout subs Beyond Audio, from what I've heard, is good. I'm gonna be bumpin an Inhuman Alum 15 in a couple months so I'll review it then.:D Here is the Beyond Audio site. (http://www.beyondaudio.ca.tc/)

EDIT: I've heard of one 15" making 130-140+db!!! That's with the Inhuman.

as far as amps id say Crunch V-drives are good for power/price.

rockfort fosgate is another alternative.

i got 2 of them, one 200w for speakers, 400 vdrive for a single crunch 12' 400w sub in a probox. it sounds great and never had problems with Crunch neither on my 240sx or galant.

i heard someone before recomended ikesound.com to shop, very nice prices, good place to check by.

if you really wanna get sweet stuff get CROSSFIRE audio. i would take it anyday over JL.

yeah, those silver boxes are most likely the clarion stock amps

If you are going to go with any of the high rated brands, you have to not only look at the max rms but also what ohms your speakers are rate at to recieve the max amount of power. I also think that if you upgrade you speakers you are going to have to eventually get an amp to push them. The amp in the deck isn't going to push anything unless the speakers are really cheap. I had some jl components up front and jl co-axials in the rear. I had to up grade to mb quarts all around because my ppi amp blew the jl's.
