View Full Version : Sharpie Art. I wanna tag up my hood

Ok so Ive been tossing the idea around for a while now.
I want to create a dope ass hood, fully custom drawn using a sharpie marker.
It has been done professionally on some high dollar exotic cars ( Sharpie Lambo, Im sure some of you have seen)
I currently have a black bmw e30 and I want to use a white sharpie to create such designs like the picture below. I am also considering vinyl covering my hood white and then starting the drawings.
Im pretty good at free hand work and I draw things quite often.
Does anyone have something like this? I don't know why but it just looks so badass
Post up ideas/ pics

+1 for the vinyl idea. we painted a friends car for fun and it turned out like crap with good artist.
maybe buy a junk yard hood and practice? drawing on a car is different, dont know why but it felt different and didnt apply as well as i thought. good luck
follow the body lines!!! it will make or break the drawing as a whole.

What about sharpie the car and then take the hood off and clear coat the shit. so its permanent... Would that even work?

Do it on vinyl and see how it turns out.
I think drawing on just the surface of the car wouldn't turn out as well.
I drew on my friend's car with a sharpie and it was kinda whateves, he ended up just spraying brakecleaner on it and it came right off.
Mind you the car was going to go get painted. So I'm not recommending you spraying brake cleaner on your paint.
It might, there is a picture of a lambo that got art done like that with a sharpie, and he had it clearcoated.
Who knows if it'll last a long time though.

sharpie fades quick in the sun if im not mistaken. clear coat would be mandatory.

a satin or even flat white base coat will give you the best surface to draw on with a black sharpie.
Get ur sharpie work on and let it set indoors, out of the weather for a week or so, then a clear should be able to be applied to seal it in better.

Check it tho... The guys straight up drawing on the hood. How the hell do you preserve this. I mean sharpie is only permanent for a while.

Sharpie will fade, even when clear coated.
I had my hood signed by someone, then immediately cleared over it. You can barely read it now.

I think this is too much... Still cool to look at tho.
Does anyone know if there is another marker of some sort that would hold up better than sharpie?

try deco paint pens. you can get them at micheals arts and crafts or jo annes has them i think
i used to use them for an art class and IMO they are the best paint pens.
as long as you shake it every now and then the ink flow will stay consistent.. unlike other paint pens i have tried IE: elmers paint pens.
i think there are some paint pens out there made for outdoor use.. they aree called woodys or something ill try and find some info on them for you

What I found:
It all began on a Saturday afternoon after pulling the hood off of the car and propping it up in the living room. After prepping the paint with denatured alcohol, I used an oil-based Sharpie brand paint marker and just started drawing. I had no plan , no stencil , or predrawing of any kind. Believe it or not, I only went through one and a half markers for the entire project....
The art is being protected via five-or-so layers of wax. I have contacted Sharpie and the paint is oil-based and UV resistant already so the art can be washed with mild detergent. Since I do not daily drive the car, she spends most of her time under a cover in a carport so I am not too worried about sun fading. I do carry a Sharpie in the glove box for quick emergency touch-ups.
...this is the guy with the BMW Hood/trunk done.

Sharpie Pant pen is a win.
Apparently it dosnt have that purple shine to it like a regular sharpie does when you look at it in different light.

i use to draw murals with sharpies on vinyl covered walls when i was a kid. the blacks just don't come out right. but as someone posted earlier, the oil based markers should do the job much better.

I had my car parked right outside the hangar, and he enjoyed the "in process/Military look" of my car at that point. Said it reminded him of his old Triumph he works on between shows and movies. lol

why couldn't you just do your drawing on the same shaped material as the panel/hood/door then chop out all the black match it to the car's panel and paint over it. thats what painters do with taping layers

Actually professional detailers use 2+2 carb and choke cleaner on paint....tar on the rocker panels, gum, scratches, etc.
Hell we went through 5 gallons of paint thinner alone in a week! All safe on clear coat as long as you don't let it sit on the paint for too long. And make sure the applied area is heavily waxed afterwards.

He used a Sharpie brand PAINT marker, if anybody was interested/couldn't figure it out. I personally wondered how an Automotive Paint Touchup pen would work (it shouldn't fade as fast, even with no clear coat).

Tagger falls off IE billboard, lands on car
:Ownedd:
JURUPA VALLEY, Calif. (KABC) -- A man painting graffiti on a billboard in Jurupa Valley fell 25 feet before he and an accomplice were arrested.
Deputies arrived at a tow yard at about 1 a.m. Saturday in the 7100 block of Mission Boulevard near the 60 Freeway and found two men behind a locked gate. Authorities said one of the men was injured after he reportedly fell off the billboard and landed on the hood of a car.
Fresh paint was found on the billboard and a can of spray paint was found at the scene.
Deputies believe the injured man, 18-year-old Eric Jimenez, strapped himself to the sign to allow him to spray paint it. The strap evidently became loose, causing Jimenez to fall.
The accomplice, identified as 18-year-old Anthony Michael Lobianco, was apparently working as a lookout.
Jimenez was taken to a hospital for treatment and charges against him were pending, deputies said.
Lobianco was booked for suspicion of felony vandalism and conspiracy at the Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside.
