My S14 Drift Car Build - LS1 content inside

Ok, so I finally feel comfortable starting on of these threads. I hate it when people make them and don't update them for months.

I'm going to start this off with a little nostalgia - a short history as to what the car has been through already.

When I got the car it was exactly what I needed it to be - stock, reliable, and it happened to be automatic. These are the pictures I took when I first saw it:

Within a week or so it looked like this:

Then a few months after that I painted the bumpers and picked up some lowering springs/shocks:

I drove around like that for quite some time, I ended up painting those wheels satin black, then traded them for my old 300ZX TT wheels that were satin black. I believe it was about 7-8 months after the above picture that I went to Japan for the first time and bought coilovers, an exhaust, some wheels and other odds and ends (the car was still automatic KA at this point):

Then I sold those wheels after ~6-7 months, did a 5-speed swap with the transmission out of my old S14 (come to think of it I've had something off of my old S14 on this car every step of the way :) ), and bought the Regamasters:

Then I did the SR swap, I'm not sure how long it was after that...I know I did it at the end of May 08:

I've done little stuff to it since the swap, finally painted my rear valances and c-west mini spoiler, some s15 injectors, a tubular manifold, a custom intercooler set up (which used the HKS bypass valve off my old S14), a OS Giken 1.5way, got some Fortune Auto coilovers to replace my JICs....oh, and lets not forget building the RSs, haha.

Now for the build portion!

I picked up a LS1 short block a month or so ago and it came with a bunch of extra goodies. I drove it back from Richmond in the trunk of the S14!

I picked up some 5.3 truck heads, an intake with fuel rails and injectors, some LS3 valves, dual springs w/ retainers, and trick flow hardened push rods since those pictures. I am still hunting for a transmission, wiring harness/ecu, throttle body, and a few other bits.

This weekend it is getting towed up to Gloucester where my friend at RE-Spec Garage is going to help me accomplish the next step - cage it, tub it, and a few other things I'll keep as a surprise so you have a reason to keep checking back, haha!


Just an idea for my fellow Zilvians out there (because I am going to be struggling). Anyone who donates $10 via paypal will get their name on my car somewhere. yes you will be struggling. it took me about 7000 to do everything including my own mounts etc.

i hope you got some cash set aside because unless you understand how to fab you going to spend a lot on mounts, driveshaft, wiring, headers etc. its not as simple as it seems and it adds up very quick even if you did everything yourself. good luck, lsx is very fun.

After the dash was out I noticed all of the shit attached to it would interfere with my wire tuck plans...

Sunday:

I woke up and drove 30 mins to get some dry ice (no place sells it in Gloucester so I had to go into Hampton). We started on the sound deadening material and got most of it removed....all thats left are some patches on the rear seat back area.

While Eric and I works on that (and 'dry ice bombs') Danny and Raz were working on bending the bars for the cage.

The main hoop came out super fucking tight, just like we wanted it (we're using 1.5" 0.125 tubing). A few spots on the inside of the car were hammered in to fit it, but it fits like a glove! Obviously, it is just sitting there in these pictures so it will not look 100% right in some of the pictures.

I have to bring my seat up there before we can do the door bars. I am trying to figure out what to do in order to keep my door panels. The panels are thick as fuck, and I am willing to cut them, but I would prefer for the cutting to occur under the elbow rest area...I'm not too sure if that will be possible.

Yes, they are through dash bars. But where the are only requires a small amount of the dash to be cut, and it really will not be noticeable. It is almost directly where the defogging vents are, so you just cut the 1" of material behind those so the dash can still be removed if need be.

Their customer service is excellent. When I ordered the kit they told me to give them a call if I have any trouble or issues with the install along the way. I also received the whole kit the day after I ordered it. I know they're only one state away from me, but that is still impressive!

I will be doing a write up of their kit with LOTS of pictures when I actually finish the installation.

I didn't see any pics of headers in the pics. Are going to run long tubes? What brand? Custom?

I was hoping I could run the Sikky long tubes, but they hang down a little past the frame rails. I am running some shorty headers they used to mock up for their long tubes though. They're just hooker block huggers with 3" tubes coming off of them that go around the steering column.

I am going to make a 3" oval Y-pipe and I haven't decided if I want to tie it into my 3" Trust DD I have sitting in my living room or if I should sell that and make a full oval exhaust so I don't destroy the DD.

Okay I get it I had the same thing happen to me if you can notice it in this pictures below. Ive always flirted with the the idea of removing about an "1-"1.5 from the LT header right in the middle so I would get more clearance and still flow a little better than the block huggers. Just something to think about

We had the idea of running an oval exhaust a few months back when we were still in the I wish mode. Just so happens that luke made that exhaust and gave us more inspiration...lol. Plan right now are to use the headers he has now, adapt v-band, and run full ovals to maybe a trust dd exhaust. What do you guys think?

Again we are going to run this car basically on the ground with a bunch of suspension mods to correct geometry.

Precisely. If I had the cash flow I would have bought their headers and got them cut up to fit right...I will just go for the shorties right now so I can spend the money where I need it - to get the car running!


I am still torn between using the Trust DD or not...I have feeling the muffler is going to hang down a whole lot more then I need it to. If someone REALLY wants a turbo Trust DD for an S14 PM me as I may be willing to come off of it, haha.

Sikky kit is by far the best one out there. All parts are top notch.

I am exhausted! I just got back home from working on the car. I didn't bring my camera because I wanted to try and focus on 100% business.

The rest of my crap came in for my roll center adjusters, so Danny will be getting those welded up this week.

The door bars are completed and look sick as hell - I'm sure Danny will snap a picture of those this week too.

I got my 300ZX uprights on the rear, and they definitely weigh a good 7lbs less then the stock ones.

The front subframe is back on the car as well.


This shit should be getting put back together here shortly. The rest of my motor stuff should be wrapped up in a month or so. I ended up picking up an LS6 intake manifold, and should be getting my wiring harness/ecu in the next week or so.

SUSPENSION:

Got the lower control arms done. They received a momo ball housing, boxing in, and notching. We are hoping for more than 55* off angle at full lock. Right now with my knuckles we are at 51* at full steering lock.

simple amazing, quick question. What are your plans for the motor? Target HP?What type of Cams? And why the truck heads? Since I plan to do the same with my Z33 just wanted to see what you had in mind.

All of my decisions so far have been solely based on cost. My original plan was truck heads (cheap and higher compression), stock bottom end with new main/rod bearings, ARP rod bolts, stock intake manifold, and 224/224 cam. I recently picked up a LS6 intake manifold/injectors/fuel rail for a price I couldn't pass up so now I am thinking LS6 intake and cam will be good - and save money.

HP wise I am going to be happy with whatever I get. I am going from 250whp so I don't want to jump up to a 400whp car. I figure it'll make something between 320-360whp.

My motor parts are as follows right now:
-97 LS1 short block w/ brand new clevite main/rod bearings and ARP rod bolts
-Truck heads
-Trick Flow 7.4 hardened push rods
-Dual valve springs/retainers
-Some sort of valves -- I got them from a friend with the springs/pushrods
-LS4 oil pump
-Rebuilt T56 transmission

I still need:
-Head gaskets
-Head bolts
-A few other random gaskets/seals
-Clutch/Flywheel
-LS6 valley cover conversion

I am sure I am leaving some stuff out. I am picking up a wiring harness/ecu tomorrow. I still have a good chunk of change left to spend - so I've been taking it easy on spending and trying to sell some stuff so I can order everything. I get the rest of my money from the SR in January so I'll have everything ordered by then for sure.

I am going to have to run spacers and probably a 235/40 or a 245/35 - the 235 will more then likely be MUCH cheaper. I am hoping I can get away with a 15mm spacer so I can still get some larger lips and run 10.5s up front. If I have to run 25mm spacers I'll be stuck with the 10 up front....which is plenty I just wanted to rebuild them with wider lips all around.

I think a decent stretch will do the trick only looks to be a few mm off so a 235 seems as it should be no worries with that, and you can still keep your offset! which is the most important part haha

He shouldn't have to run an accusump since he is using the sikky oil pan. Im pretty sure most of the oiling problems on lsx motors are from the design of the factory oil pan.

you pretty hit it on the head. The accusump is not a must have. Proper baffeling on the oil pan is more important.

Yeah, the Sikky pan is crazy. If you take it and place it on the subframe it is directly level with the it - as in it does not hang below it. So when it is actually attached to the motor it will sit above the frame. I am very happy about this :D.

I'll post lots of engine pictures when I tackle that. I will be doing a write up on their install kit.

With AC you're on your own with custom lines....shouldn't be too hard I've got some friends that TIG extremely well, they made me custom lines for my SR but I never used them because of my FMIC set up. Heat is just a matter of hooking up some hoses to your heater core.

Why do you want the tie rods to run parallel with the lca? Is this just so that the lca with act as a steering stop? Maybe you can answer this... how many degrees is too much??? I mean there has to be a point at which the rack wont extend far enough of it actually extends past a radius when you just cant turn the wheel back. For instance, if you go into a corner, throw the wheel to what you think is full lock, and the outter tie rods go too far. When you counter the steering wheel locks cause your outer tie rods are trying to rotate into the lca instead of coming off the lca.

Second idea.. are you going to run a lower offset wheel to keep the tire off the lower frame rail? At this much angle wont the wheel just end up riding on the tension rod when you get the wheel off the frame rail?

Great work on the car so far.. Just thought i would brain storm with you..

The notch in the control arm is just to allow a little more. When you modify the knuckle you achieve more lock in less turns, so the rack is not harmed/effected. Also, there will be a new stopper welded on to keep the knuckle from turning too far - the tie rod end will not just slam into the lca over and over.

I know how they work... I have modded knuckles myself. I was just curious when too much angle would be a problem. you are going to have the bumpstop actually stop the knuckle?? Going to weld a tab on the lca to limit the knuckle?

it looks like we will have to mod the lca knotch one more time. The PBM desing is a real good desing. I honestly havent looked at any other desings but mine. All i have to do is move my idea about 3/4" for it to work with the tierod end. The other problem we have is that the ball joint geometry correction has left a bigger gap between the LCA and knuckle. Ill figure it tomorrow.

They aren't shortened, we just made the outer tie rod part nice and long so we could have lots of adjustability. I am not 100% sure for my set up, but on his S13 nothing was shortened, and nothing was shortened on another S13 that ran a similar set up.

Today was the day the s14 ls1 was goin to be on the ground no matter what. Even thought we are having one hell of a winter snow storm that wasnt going to stop me. I fired up the garage heaters and went to work. I got all four corners installed today and tried to set ride height. The rear will go super low and still have enought adjustment for the lower control arms to be parallel with the ground. The front still needs a smaller spring to get the stance we want. Everything is going on smooth with only a few spots that had to get grinded down.

Lower control arm mods to hopefully fix the suspension geometry. Im not an engineer, but it looks like its going to work. It uses a momo ball housing welded to the oem LCA's. We also inserted a spherical bearing to work with a GM ball joint stud. Lots off reasearch went into this to make it work.

The rear still needs to be adjusted at the ball joint. As you can see on a lowered 240 the lca is pointing up. With the GM ball joint and some spacers we will solve that problem. Now you will be able to ride super low and have your LCA in stock location. The rear got some love from Fortune auto s14 coilovers with z32 mounts to fit the z32 rear spindles. If you want great service hit them up. Also a set of spl rear upper camber arms, PBM solid spacers and ofcourse all my attention to detail and mods.

The spherical bearings are in the LCAs on the front and rear. They have another 1/2 or more of space to space it out.

The rear doesn't really need to be completely flat, the fronts are the important part.

Do you mean make it flat like the front? I don't have the spacers to move the arm down more yet so the rear is angled up still. I should have another 1/2 or so of space to move it down - but the front is definitely the most important roll center to correct, so I am happy to see that it is completely flat with more space left on the stud to adjust it up higher!

You can actually see how much the rear has been corrected since the Toe arm and the LCA are usually parallel with each other. So once I get the LCA where it needs to be I will see if my friend who TIGs extremely well can cut and reweld my toe arm mounting point to make it parallel with the LCA again and fix some/most of the toe curve problems out back. A S15 time attack car has done this, so that's where I got the idea:

We mocked up razmus URAS side skirt to see how low the car is sitting. Well right now we are about 1.5-2 of the ground. The scary part is that the front can go about another 4in before the subframe is on the floor.

I am not sure if I'll be able to achieve that ride height with ~0 camber with 17s. I am hoping I'll have the money together to get the motor put together in about a month.

Picked up my new RSs today from the post office - they showed up while I was out of town. I discovered some interesting surprises as I opened the boxes. Instead of four 17X8 +50 RSs I received a set of 17X7/8 +45/+50 RSs. This is pretty exciting because the 7 inch RSs have 6" barrels, so they are more sought after by people looking to run more lip/clear up more inner room for their suspension.

I already have 6" barrels up front on my car so I am probably going to list the pair for sale on a VW forum and see if I can't find another pair of 17X8 +50s.

I think you came out to the first Sumospeed spring show back in 07? You had what looked like a mostly stock silver moss S14 but you had a fully polished/chromed out 2JZ engine bay right? I was blown away by that!

Not yet, I should be picking it up this weekend :D.

It'll be doing some sitting for about a month but once I get my finances back where I want them it'll picking back up with motor work! I only need a few more parts to get the motor together, then it is just a matter of wiring it up and dealing with the details of the build.

Once I get through some events with the car and all of the kinks are smoothed out with it my RE-Spec Garage will be making them to sell.

I love seeing clean ls-swaps like this and the effort to correct the suspension geometry. I only have two questions...

Whats the advantage of the 5.3-truck heads (more flow or higher rev support over the 5.7?)?

Also when you say "momo ball", do you mean mono-ball? I've heard of mono-ball joints, but never momo. Makes me think Momo-italy is building ball joints now.

Haha, yes mono-ball/spherical bearing, momo was a type-o for sure.


The 5.3 heads bump the compression up nearly a full point, making it 11:1 compression. With slightly larger valves (the stock truck valves are a little bit smaller then LS1 valves) they make 40-50hp over the stock heads.

Just did a little test fitting of the bumper and stock fenders before I moved the car/all of my crap in the garage today.

I can't believe the bumper fits so good. I have no bumper support on and the fenders aren't held on with anything. The bumper is held on with like a 1/8th inch of the fender on each side.

I am aiming to get this done by the end of March!!!

Yes, Sikky can do the engine wiring. I am relocating my fuse box and putting all of the wiring back in the car though, and I want to be sure I do it all right, haha.

I got a 224/224 Lutani cam and am running the 5.3L truck heads.

I was thinking about stroking my LS1 to a 383ci and doing a sick head and cam combo and adding a F.A.S.T 102mm. But I might just do a good head and cam combo with the F.A.S.T and do the stroker next year

The 224/224 is mild and shifts the power band up a little bit, so I thought it would be a good power adder, but nothing that crazy since I just have a LS6 intake.


I am not doing any head work unless the valves I have will not fit, haha. If they fit then they'll just be stock truck heads - which that alone bumps the compression up to 11:1.
