Colorado ski town legalizes pot - Yahoo! News (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_marijuana_legalization)

21 and over can possess up to an ounce. not for medical. just for whatever.
wow.
this is actually pretty huge news, even though it's still illegal at state and federal levels. just... wow.

Breckenridge is a classy town in a really pretty location, hope a bunch of trashy people do not start going there. :(
There are probably like 10 permanent residents, who are all ski lift operators or rent out mountain bikes during the summer, haha.

Edit
Just logged into Myspace. Some girl who has pot leaves and Bob Marley all over her profile posted a status update saying she wants to move to Colorado. :(:(:(

Federal law trumps state law.... think about how having a state registered and legal skyline is, just because you have it doesn't make it legal. If you do it, or wave it infront of a a FBI or fed I guaran-fuckin-tee your ass is grass, pun not intended.

as of about two weeks ago federal policy is to not interfere, so long as it's legal at state level. so you can put that federal baby to bed right now.

whatever, it's a symbolic gesture, it's still pretty amazing.

I honestly don't see it being controlled for much longer, considering the stance that the oh great savior seems to be taking on that topic. Especially considering the revenue that can be brought on from taxation if it goes full blown legal, but hey I could be wrong and I probably am. Just speculating.

Yeah, this will spread like fire. Expect most of the more liberal states (and some more Libertarian western states, like CO) to legalize the stuff in relatively short order.

I'd love to walk around with a QO in my backpack and not have to worry about it, lol. I don't even really smoke anymore, it's been years, but I'd just be amused by the legality all the same.

I will explain this only ONCE in this Thread.

As Marijuana use is still FEDERALLY ILLEGAL, it is still against Forum Guidelines to speak about it's use. Do not attempt to flex your local laws, or even a Medical perscription as an excuse to discuss FEDERALLY ILLEGAL activities.

In short, do yourself a favor, do NOT talk about the use of said substances.

Thank you, enjoy your discussion.

good question.
to be conservative, I'd have to agree.
(best to safe in this respect, but it's not my forum needless to say)
suppose it could be interpreted either way.

Interesting discussion though nonetheless.
I doubt this will be the last town to do that sort of thing.
would be interesting to see whether or not,
CO enforces their law (should what the town be doing is illegal).
would really depend on the details of their state law.

Lol, i'm fairly sure other states might want in, should CO be making $$$.
I'm inclined to agree there should be at least a limited number of places where the substance is sold.
maybe not a good idea to open shops next to local high schools, family places, & such.
use and/or possession would prob be much more difficult to enforce.

will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Yah there's a double standard for sure.

personally I would find having liquor sold anywhere close to a hs to be in poor taste (if not also reckless).

then again if you're desperate enough drunk and/or pothead,
I suppose any reasonable distance isn't going to discourage you.

Like I said earlier I am pretty sure all this did was eliminate the "cracking" down possession charges for marijuana. Smoking it, dealing it, or carry anything more than an ounce on ones person is a convictable crime. They state is not seeing a DIME, nowhere did they say they are selling marijuana at the corner store and taxing it. The cops will still find people and pull them over / question them, its now just that if they have an ounce of marijuana on them they have to find something else to write them a ticket for (which is exactly what will happen). To me personally I think its a horrible idea.

In my opinion this will hurt Breckenridge. It would probably work for some town in the middle of nowhere that has nothing else going for it, but Breckenridge is already one of the most popular tourist/family destinations in Colorado. Once this news spreads more, I doubt people will be very eager to take their children on vacation to the only place in America where marijuana is legal. Plus weed tends to attract a not so desirable crowd, so I will be curious to see how their crime rate and such will compare in a few years.

good point.

I think regardless of actual crime rates, families are going to frown on something like that.
from a purely economic point of view it's a very risky venture to do this for a town that already has a source of income.

exactly how well the town has been doing with their resort might be hard to say with data.
could also be that with the economic times, business has been slow.
maybe they are desparate.

True story but...... crime rate will stay the same im pretty damn sure about that. When they pasted the new laws in Oakland CA just these past couple years that made marijuana less illegal crime rate actually went down. It will prob attract less family's yes, but with in the next 10 years im sure there will be atleast 2 states that will legalize pot. So ppl are just going to have to get use to it.

Dont hide and shelter your children from the truth ie weed WILL NOT kill you nor hurt you. Just because mom's and dad's dont want there kids around it dont fucking lie to them saying its going to ruin there life's and there going to be worthless bums if they touch it.

Best advice. Grow up, establish a life, get a good job and when you are out of school and know whats good for yourself and your family then smoke or dont smoke. But dont let someone else control your life and tell you what not to do or what to do. Do it after you get a life not while your in the middle of trying to make a name for yourself.

Stereotypes exist because they usually have some truth to them. It doesn't matter whether its "street racers" or "potheads", it effects everyone... One bad apple spoills the bunch. While I do agree on the fact they will probably see some increased income does it really make that much? My guess is they did this to prove more of a point, and sadly we won't know how it works till atleast another year or two down the road. Either way Breckenridge IMO goes from a tourist attraction that attracted families, and other cliental, now attract some of the undesirables (mainly people who will visit it JUST because they can have Pot). Eh...like someone already said, Colorado is, and has been, pretty lineant in regards to marijuana for some time now.

I remember walking through downtown Denver in like '05 and a couple of bums were smoking a joint maybe 150 yards from the state capitol.

This fight will come down to how powerful the anti-drug lobby vs. the pro-legalization lobby really is.

Right now this country is drifting back towards the pre-Nixon administration years. Which is fine by me. I guess I just don't have that sense of moral panic over peoples' personal choices.

The War on Drugs is bullshit anyway. Far more lives have been ruined due to this "war" than have been "saved".

The government should only legalize marijuana in one state. They should pick a state no one wants to live in, so everyone wanting to smoke it legally will move to the middle of the desert somewhere.

You still can't show up for work drunk, or drink at work.

Should be the same for "IF" weed becomes legal. Can't come to work high, can't smoke weed at work.

This is not an opening for you to tell me about how many times you've showed up for work, hungover/still drunk/high. This is speaking strictly in terms of what you are "allowed" to do. Not what you will attempt to get away with.

with out a doubt of course. I myself own a business i wouldnt let my employees to come all high . legal or not. you know
even I dont smoke while im on the job.

Just a question. If the Feds wanted to make it legal, couldn't they just start issuing the tax stamp they required to make it 'illegal'? So wouldn't it really already be 'legal' just no one has the tax stamp right?

you can get tax stamp. but here is the catch you much bring in the weed to show that you have it so they can give you the stamp. I think this was passd in the 50's or 20's when they did this and its still in congress.
The funny think is your incriminating yourself in the process since it is a federal law.

you tube it its true go to a libary and read about it its true..
our gov is funny in certain ways.

I can only imagine the crazyness of it all if they did legalize it at the federal level. Imagine how many inmates would be released, now possibly more f'd up then before they went in. Not to mention the class action lawsuits against the government for lost wages that people would try to sue for. It would be crazy.

In Canada, its illegal, but generally the police don't care if you have a couple joints on you. You'd have to be an obvious dealer to be an issue. That said, if they want to nail you, they'll just add it to the charges. Depends on what they are looking for and how much of an ass you are. its kinda nice knowing I wont go to jail unless someone in my car is carrying a pound with them, even then, I might walk if the passenger claims it was his. I know some of your states like to nail everyone.
