View Full Version : Am I running too rich?

I just installed a new fuel pump yesterday (walbro 255lph, i have an s13 sr20det.) Turns out the previous owner had already had the same one installed, oh well, doesn't hurt to replace it with a new one i guess. Anyways before installation (and after) my fuel pressure was at about 40 psi. I'm supposedly running on a tuned ecu, i only know that it has a daughterboard installed with 2 chips on it, I have no idea what the tune is for. I'm not exactly sure why the ecu was tuned, the motor is running stock boost, i believe stock fuel injectors, just has fmic and freddy intake manifold. ANYWAYS, so after installing the fuel pump, when the motor is still cold and warming up, if i open the throttle just a little bit, the motor starts to bog and the RPM's drop way down, as if the mtor is about to stall. If I get on the throttle the motor will accelerate just fine. Idle seems fine both cold and warm. After the motor has warmed up, this problem will go away. If I put my hand behind the exhaust pipe, it becomes damp within a few seconds. I turned down the fuel pressure to about 35ish psi and the problem still persists. I guess I could have botched the fuel pump installation, but I would think the symptoms would be different if the problem was related to fuel starvation. Has anyone had this same problem before? Can anyone give some insight was to what the problem may be? Thanks in advance.

EDIT: Well this post definitely characterizes my shear ignorance in terms of car problem diagnosis. I just turned my car on again and this time INCREASED my fuel pressure to about 60 psi. The motor no longer bogs down when i slightly open the throttle, and throttle response actually seems quite snappy now. Now my next question would be, is running the stock (im assuming stock) injectors at 60 psi safe?

EDIT #2: My next question would be, why would I need to increase the fuel pressure if I'm running mostly stock components?

sorry guys gotta bump this cause the issue doesn't make any sense to me now. can anyone think of any reasons why i might be needing to bump the fuel pressure up to about 60 psi? the only reasons i could possibly think of atm are that either a. the gauge is just reading wrong, b. my injectors are bad / going bad. i figure that even if my ECU was tuned to run a bit richer, that shouldn't force me to bump up the fuel pressure significantly since there isn't any extra air being forced into the motor (like i said, stock boost, 7psi). am i looking in the right direction, or am i way of base? any help would be greatly appreciated.

If It runs better at 60 psi the only thing I can think of is that the ecu is tuned for larger injectors, buy increasing the fuel pressure you are rasing how much the injector is flowing. Try and get a regular ecu and see how it runs with fuel pressure set to stock.

get a freakin wideband. itll save your motor from blowin

you need to watch the fuel pressure UNDER LOAD,

this means on a dyno or somehow while under acceleration.

If you're interested I have a slot open for dyno diagnostics this Saturday if you want to get everthing 100% locked down- we can adjust fuel pressure, etc.
