View Full Version : Rotor scrapes dust shield while turning??

Been doing it for a while..tried to remove shields with a dremel but got frustrated. Not sure why it happens..mainly during turns and when the suspension compresses for bumps/dips. Here's the specs..s14, abs, 16x8 35 offset wheels .

I don't recall it ever happening with stock wheels when I first got car years ago. I know when I first got the 16x8's about year and a half ago, after being mounted I heard a rubbing noise leaving the tire shop, and the guy mentioned something about the shield. He just pulled on it some and it was good. I did get new rotors some time after, and I'm trying to remember if I got abs versions, if that even makes a difference.

Appreciate any help

remove the shields

If I remember correctly, you just remove the hub.

yup, remove hub, shield falls off pretty much.

but idk sounds funny you should probably figure out the actual reason.

have you tried jacking up the car and turning the wheel and stuff to see whats going on?

i know you said it only does it when it compresses but.. just to get an idea?

that is a pretty outrageous wheel size... but i dont think that would cause it

Beat the fuck out of it.

Get some tin snips and cut them off,Cutting wheel will make quick work of it, or if you wanna keep em intact pull the hub. You have plenty of options to choose from, find which one makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside and go with it.

Just bend it away from the rotor...not exactly rocket science...

Yeah well that rocket science only seems to work temporarily. Beend in so far in one area that it brings another closer to the rotor. I guess I'll take one day when warm and not raining to try and figure out the problem.

Thanks for the replies

that's what i did. can't even tell they were ever there.

Might have to look into that..I actually think I had the wrong cutting wheels for the job. Not like the one that came with the dremel it self. I got what I think they called the heavy duty versions, but think I needed the reinforced. I cracked like 6 wheels before i gave up lol..metal was to tough for em.

Take off the hub.

Done

36 and 17's if I remember right.

And you cant grab two long screw drivers and bend it in opposite direction at the same time? Seriously, shit is so fucking flimsy you can bend it by hand. I've done a couple of Z32 upgrade where the rotors are larger than the shield and I didnt even take the fucking things off...

PS: Now that I'm thinking about it, your rotor is attached to the hub and your dustshield is attached to the knuckle. If the rotor is touching the dustshield intermittently...then time to check your hub bearings. You probably have some play on it causing it to touch the shield. Might be time for you to buy new wheel bearings.

your rotor scrapes the sheild only when turning???

theres a bigger problem than that.

the knuckle, shield, hub, rotor, and wheel are all bolted to each other and none of them should move unless rotating.

sounds to me like your wheel bearings are going bad or your lugnuts/hub nut arent tight.

any of those arent good

check:
lugnuts
main hub nut
wheel bearings

EDIT: he beat me to it. lol

my friends shields did this a while back. we bent them back a few times and they would creep closer the the rotor daily until they touched it again. I couldnt figure out what exactly was making them touch the rotor so we just took them off.

you beat me to it lol....

Lift the side thats scraping and check for play. grab the spoke at 12 o clock and the spoke at 6 o clock and see if u get any play out of it...

Yeah, all of the sudden out of nowhere, my steering linkage was rubbing against my brake lines, so I just beat the hell out of both of them and bent them all back and in funky different ways.
If that dont work, I might just take them both off.

No.
As already stated above, check your wheel bearings.
Figure out whats causing this change in action/reaction.

Dont be a parts changer, be a mechanic.

Could be possible..never thought bearings. I told somebody else the problem once too and they said didn't make since cause knuckle and all moves as one unit which I already knew and agreed with em. See I've got a couple things to check. Thanks for the replies

Alright I tried bending back. I got one spot real good as I jammed about a 1.5" bar between the rotor and shield. Thus bringing the shield closer to the rotor in the spot diagonally below it. Tried prying that part back while the bar was left wedged in above, but didin't have much room to give. Even after all that still certain spots I guess that scrape cause I hear it still. So I plan to remove the shields at some point.

Now another issue. When I was prying on the passenger side, i actually slid my rotor fwd on the lugs sitting at an angle..the part outside the caliper that is. Why it moved I don't know. I had to end up tightening lug nuts against it to hold it in place. The driver side didn't move the whole time?? I mean once I put the wheel and lug nuts on it sat in the original position, and the car drove and braked fine. I'm just concerned why one rotor moved and other didn't.

Appreciate any input

so did u check your hubs yet? you know what since u got new wheels u sure your not rubbing on the fender well? do your fenders need rolling?

I forget do I have to both front wheels off ground or just one, cause I don't have jack stands and only roadside jack to work with. I tried shaking the wheel with my hands once it was mounted again. I didn't notice play, but like I said opposite wheel was on the ground still so dunno if that makes a difference. I'm 16x8 with 35 off set on springs..I still have some wheel gap so i don't know why I would be rubbing. Also seems like only the right side does the scrapping noise in a hard right turn.

u only need one wheel off the ground. grab the 12 oclock spoke and the 6 o clock and shake the wheel for play, if you got play then its bad.. also if your lug nuts are not seated correctly your rotors may scrape. while your in there check the dust shield and rotor for rubbing if you find a spot where it rubs you can use that as a starting point for your problem.

Oh I know the shield and rotor were/are making contact because there are marks on the shield that line up with the rotor. I try jacking up the car and check for play again, and maybe give another try at bending the shield

when i did my z32 swap I got some tin snips and cut the part of the dust shield that bends over the rotors off. I had a scraping issue initially but I cut em there and now im golden. just bend em flat then cut em.

Are you sure your new wheels have the correct center bore?

If it's too small, it wont hold the rotor firmly on the hub

if the bore was the case he would have it on both sides wouldnt he.

Yeah no problems with wheels on, and it was only the passenger side that the rotor could move some with the caliper still on top of it. It maybe normal for all I know, just strange one side did it and other didn't. Hope I'm explaining clearly what happen.

Took two screw drivers and placed them up against the rear of the rotor, to use as leverage to push the shields back. In doing so it scooted the the rotor forward on the passenger side, but couldn't slide completely off cause of the caliper. However when I put the wheel back on the rotor sits back in place against the hub.

im trying to figure out if ur seriously ask this? ur rotor moved when u pryed on it....the rotor isnt "bolted" to the car in ANYWAY, its sandwiched between the wheel and the hub.

Seriously though this is a completly asinine thread, or is becomming one. take off the hub...remove the shield....while ur there inspect the wheel bearings...if they are bad replace them...done

END THREAD

y r u prying on the rotor? Did u check the hub or not? take a picture of that shit.

I also say wheel bearing, when youre driving poke your head out the window and look at your rim for run out.... other than that iono.. GL
