my car died and it was because the starter wasnt engaging. i took off the gear box and replaced the flywheel and clutch. the previous owner had an aluminum flywheel and the teeth on it, and the old starter were completely chewed where there was none left. the old starter also had a rigged plug. so i got the new flywheel and a 1990 240 starter. but the 240 starters nose is to long to fit in the bell housing and has a differnt plug. so i got a 2.4 litre datsun pickup starter. it fits in good and i rigged the plug to work, but it still wont engage. the old starter has no numbers on it to figure out what it is and i cant find one that looks like it. there were no shims in the bell housing or over the starter. does anyone know what i would need?

depending on where you got the starter from it's not uncommon for the parts store to mix it up. happened many times from working in the shop and ordering from local parts store.
auto and manual starters are usually different.
Just take your old starter that was in there in the first place, and bring it to parts store and match up to a new one

we cant find one that looks like the original and theres no numbers on it. im about to try a 1996 240 starter to see if it will work

lol a 1996 is a twin cam,
and you have a single cam,
i dont think those would match up

yea i kno but it was worth a try. it fits good and has the same plug, which the 1990 240 starter had the wrong plug. the bolt pattern just doesnt match up

Yes I know it says "Mitsubishi" in the description. Mitsubishi makes parts for Nissan. Just like Ford makes parts for Mazda.
There's even a picture.
