View Full Version : partially racist hot pocket commercials

why is hot pocket's advertising so racial?
so im sure many of you have been exposed to their earlier campaign of an elderly man of asian decent in the tv ads a few months ago (maybe a year?) who belligerently yells at kids that they need HAAAAW PAW-KETTS!!! being of chinese decent, i wasnt offended by this, but my eldest brother however, flew off the fuckin handle because of them...he would scorn me for eating hot pockets (even though im always under fire from everyone for eating that shit anyway), for supporting, and enabling them to keep airing these racist commercials...i thought he was crazy thinking its not that big of a deal...i did think that it was a little played to have an asian person yell randomly just for the novelty of it...cmon, its 2009, revamp your advertising department...however, im not here to question peoples tolerances for racism...
ON THE OTHER HAND, their recent campaign seems to be for a new product that can be eaten on the go...it seems they are targeting change in the way you eat breakfast...low and behold, they compare it to something else that is blatantly racial...conceptually, its a catchy idea at first and is amusing PURELY because of its absurdity of how people would treat others "who eat on the go" differently...but all the people that are offering resistance in the commercial are WHITE...all the actions that are taken against people who "eat on the go" include: altercations on a bus, writing obscenities on their house, random ranting, etc. quite similar to something in history, no?
now, i can take a joke just as well as any other person can, but dont you think this is a little too much to stomach? theyre making a very dark part of OUR history an absolute joke and satire to sell crappy (yet convenient ;D) food products...how do these types of PR/advertising get past upper management? regulations? discussion panels? etc.? does anyone else feel the same? am i over analyzing? to say the least, i am not amused and do not look forward to hot pockets future campaigns...

based on the reaction im getting from my views on the subject, i apologize for using my brain for more analytical thoughts other than calculating offset and poke...besides this isolated incident regarding an ad, i think thats americas main problem if you ask me...everyones unwillingness to question whats presented to them...whether it be in the media, news, etc...racism is a predominate part of our nation and it seems that people just dont care anymore and accept everything for its surface value...it could also be that im in advertising...
sorry i am sensitive and have the UTMOST RESPECT for actual people that went through what they did in the 60's, only for it now to be reiterated through a commercial about fucking breakfast triangle thingies...
would i still be under this much fire if i brought up that mercedes commercial where a black mans day was outlined, followed by him hopping out of a c class at some chic restaurant, then the liner was, "upgrade yourself"? or would i still be overly PC and un-american in that instance too?

The 'free eaters' commercials are annoying. Americans already have terrible table manners and eat everything with their hands like animals, and here comes a commercial only further encouraging it, making people who eat properly look like jerks.
I know it is all supposed to be in humor, but i wish they would advocate sitting at a table with family and eating using silverware in a nice sophisticated manner instead.
Actually, food commercials should just be banned from tv.

I want to offer an opinion, but I haven't seen the commercial.
Some people might look into a commercial and see nothing.
Others might see the same commercial and declare it outrageous because of possible racial topics.
Who knows, really....
There are a million different ways to see advertising.
Anyways, look at the special award shows that single out black people, asian people, hispanic people, etc. I find it ironic that these kind of shows even exist. Also please remember that there are entire TV stations that are dedicated to certain races. I thought we were supposed to live in a world free of segregation?
That makes a lot of sense, right?
Nope. It doesn't.
However, it seems that society accepts it.
In my opinion, the discrimination of different races, white, black, red, orange, yellow, brown, etc. is ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWASY going to exist. I don't think the human race can possibly exist in a "color free" world. I really don't.
I think it is WRONG to judge a person in any way based on the color of thir skin.
Anyways, at the end of the day, do what YOU think is right. Hopefully each one of us can understand that the color of a person's skin does not give anybody the right to discriminate against them. If you think the commercial is racist and it bugs you a lot, you should contact the company and mention it.

i am however offended (more worried that no one even gives it any deeper thought) by their current campaign...this in conjunction with the last campaign only suggests and reinforces the fact that their marketing is in one word racial...

That's because women make up 85% of the purchasing power within America. It's easy to sell shit to women if you marginalize men and make females the heroes of society.

I would pretty much agree with revat. OP you are seriously over thinking this. The commercial is getting patently absurd for the sake of effect. In fact it worked and quite well because it made you overreact. Which got you talking about the product. That's a win in marketing.
I seriously doubt black or white would find it racist or offensive in any such way. Oh and to correct you. You were not even alive when that stuff happened so how can you feel ashamed of it? You did not do it.
Fact is every country in the world has done socially wrong things at some point. Fact is if people were alive at the time of those things then yes they should feel some kind of social responsibility for it.
Though I cannot be held accountable nor feel guilty for actions that did not happen in my lifetime when I could not have influence on them.
People need to learn to stop laying blame, people need to look at the past and just learn from it.
People need to take responsibility for their current situations and make their own lives better, not try to blame it on stuff that has already happened.
Being socially aware is one thing. Being socially guilty for crimes you did not commit is another. You are trying to feel socially guilty for something you had nothing to do with.
Get over it.

If you want to be analytical, consider the details.
People in the bus were just telling the 'hot pockets dude' not to sit next to them.
Not like the bus had a section for 'hot pockets ppl' and 'non hot pockets ppl'
Some public buses do have a 'no food or drink' policy.
It would also help if you could work on your writing.
I had no idea what in the hell the 2nd & 3rd paragraph were about, until Brian asked for a clarification.

The worst thing about racism is that when races other than white are the subject of racial jokes (in comercials or whatever) they always make a big deal out of it , while when the white guys are the target they couldn't give a sh.t , or at least I don't. Why is that ?

This is a topic that people usually don't talk about (I think).
I kind of brought it up earlier about the Racially constructed television stations and race specific awards shows.
To me, it seems that racism somehow CAN'T happen to white people.
Look at something like BET channel. Black Entertainment Television.
Ok fine. If you watch it, cool. Enjoy. But what would happen if somebody was to say, "Hey, I want to make the White Entertainment Channel."
What happens then?
Look at something like Latin Grammy Awards, ALMA awards, etc.
To me, it seems like humans will continue to point out differences and seperate things based on race/nationality/whatever.

Ya man. I sometimes don't get that either.
We have an "aboriginal center" at my school. That's cool and all, but why don't we have an asian center... or, GOD FORBID, a caucasian center?! We spend a bunch of money on separating a certain group of people from the rest of the student body. WHY?
Hopefully racism will slowly die out. I feel that with each generation it's becoming less of an issue. There is still many cultural differences... but most people my age are very understanding of other cultures/races and are generally not offended by much.

Icy13
10-28-2009, 01:16 AM
I think the OP's point was (or maybe should have been) that while this may have been intended in good fun and while it probably isnt that offensive to anyone maybe certain things should not be marginalized for advertising both because maybe its wrong but more because you don't fuck with certain things: i.e. civil rights in america, fascism in Germany, or the holocaust in a synagogue, fornication with a priest, abusing women in a battered womens shelter, abusing women in general, etc.
Maybe it has been a long time, maybe tensions shouldn't be what they are, and yes maybe laughing is the first step to getting over these parts of history... but a commercial for a convenient, crappy (yet tasty) comestible is not the place to do it!
Why:
1. It isn't good for profit,
2. It isn't good for public image which isn't good for profit
3. If you get blacklisted by certain community standards organizations (such as the ratings boards for television..) you lose the ability to place ads in almost every venue in print (for details, see the problem with X-ratings and the fight to change to NC-17)
Matej

Hey y'all.
I have this awesome idea for a movie.
It will be about two white guys who are brothers, and they are also detectives, and in order to solve a crime they have to go undercover disguised as two black women. Not sure what I'll call it yet, so far I have come up with the name Black Chicks.
Basically, all of the humor in the movie will be based on good 'ole racial and gender stereotypes.
What do y'all fine gentlemen think? I think it would be a big hit.
Icy13
10-29-2009, 03:33 AM
yes, thats called targeting a product to a market. Thats also a movie, and no matter how commercial hollywood may have become there is a distinction.
Now, if you were a trying to sell something to a middle aged man who listens to NPR, do you really think you would advertise it in Black Chicks?
Number D: You are witty, ha ha ha.
Letter 7: great job missing the entire point of the thread, its not that it wont make money it is that it is in poor taste. You may disagree, but you cannot discuss whether or not it is in poor taste by saying it would make a lot of money. Or you could, but it would mean nothing. And I guess that is really the point.
Maybe Black People should learn not to take everything racial quite so seriously (not saying that they do take it too seriously, but simply that the argument could be made). However, maybe poking fun at the struggle for civil rights is not something that hot pockets should be doing; I don't think convenience food is going to be a real talking point in racial relations.
