View Full Version : Calling all Oldschool Death/Black metal fans!

Pank
10-22-2009, 11:03 AM
Well, it seems that the new school crap is finally pushing the (much better) old school death and black metal out the door.
BUT, this means that all those albums are going cheaaaaappp.

check:

The Unpopular Truth: Labels selling off old-school metal (http://penetrate.blogspot.com/2009/10/labels-selling-off-old-school-metal.html)

for details, but check out the separate online stores separately, b/c there are a crapload of deals not even listed there (IE, all of Relapse's vinyl single compilations are 5-6 bucks, instead of 10)

Now, that being said, I really hope i'm not (and doubt I am) the only one here who listens to this.

Discuss!

dimmu borgir. my black met fav.

Pank
10-22-2009, 01:18 PM
Dimmu is SUUUUPER poppy, and barely even black metal.
I saw them live with Children of Bodom and Hypocrisy (and Nevermore, ugh). Left after they played Progenies, b/c it was so over produced and extravagant.
I don't hate them, but they're about as black metal as Cradle of Filth (not very)

Also, there hasn't been ONE good death metal album released this year. NOT. ONE.

That new stuff that is considered "Death Metal/Black Metal" nowadays is a joke.
A bunch of scene kids with dyed black hair, sleeves of tattoos, and play break downs.

Give me the good ol' stuff any day.

Death, Morbid Angel, Carcass, etc etc etc

ya when i was younger i liked how it took me like 50 cents to take a bus downtown go to the record store get a metal cd or whatever is in the "listen to this booth" for under $6 and then take the bus back home while listening to it on my cd player

now that the store is closed i have to spend maybe $15 to drive to L.A. (hour drive or more depending on traffic) to go to this store called amoeba records to get my shit
all the other stores around me arent so great

Pank
10-23-2009, 06:44 PM
Cradle of Filth? not black metal. or at least "true" black metal (SO not getting into that, haha)

Black Dahlia Murder has changed quite a bit since their inception. They flat out admitted that they were trying to be the next Prayer for Cleansing (local NC band, HUGE when the Metalcore scene was burgeoning in the late 90's, early 2000's), but now it seems like they're more and more a legit metal band, still a little "corey" if that makes sense.

Also Gwar isn't metal at all. Not saying they're bad or anything, but if you actually listen to them, they're just straight rock and roll. Also, I'm pretty sure the metal capitol is a Scandinavian country, not florida ;)

(Morbid Angel is ok though, I guess)

lol im going to disagree with you on that one. There are a lot more bands than morbid angel that came out of tampa. Ill say the metal scene in Tampa is not what it used to be but is still in the top two or three for death metal.

Massacre
Six Feet Under
Blood by Dawn (newer)
Mortifier
Hate Eternal (Erik Rutans new band)
Assuck
Deicide
Atheist
Denial Fiend
Monstrosity
Disembodiment
Death
Obituary
Cannibal Corpse
Brutality
The Absence (newer)
Morbid Angel
Unkempt
Nocturnus

Pank

Kataklysm is pretty good too.

Cradle and Dimmu are Ok at best. Can't stand Gwar (other than their live shows) Cannibal Corpse never excited me either. Sadly I'd have to classify myself as more Nu Metal than anything. Droid, Gojira, Children of Bodom, Lamb of God (flame away), you know, the 'trendy' metal.

also Incubus, no not the newer mid to late 90s Incubus, but the death gods from Florida that originally had the name (albums Beyond the Unknown, and Serpent Temptation)

check these as well.
Thrash: Crucifier
Dark Angel
Exciter
Execution
Exumer
Flames

Pestilence
Toxic Holocaust
Wargasm (good luck finding this one)

Old Death:

Master
Messiah
Morbid Saint (highly recomended)
Morta Skuld

this is going to be a tough game to win, bands.

please post your beard, so that i have reference

I freakin' love The Absence, they have been my favorite for a long ass time.

ALso, another NC local band that's making it kinda big recently. (used to be named And Since Forgotten) went to school with a couple of these cats:

Dont let this thread die, you jerks.

Anyway, for all you new to metal people. Maybe you like rock and roll. Maybe you and your girl put on matching heather grey hoodies over your kelly green Finch T-Shirts, and listen to Jimmy Eat World together while you try to muster up the courage to touch her boobs for the first time. Its ok, we've all been there, but while you're there, why not try to squeeze some metal into your life? Try this on for size, guitars are metalcorey enough for you to both be comfortable, and the singer sounds 17, so your girlfriend will feel at ease enough for you to maybe get some above-the-bra action. I present, Mendeed "Through Dead Eyes"

not really, no. I could get a record deal and tour TOMORROW, its not really that hard.
Its better than local, sure, but it doesn't take much to get out of the local scene. It takes a phone call and enough vehicle to travel there. thats it.

I wish Tribunal Records was like they were in the late 90's.

anyway, heres some super popular blackened death:

HAHA its all good I just like to talk shit,

besides, I used to despise metal back when it was good and then for some reason I started liking it over the past couple years, according to my friends I like "math metal", I think.

Honestly the only metal I listen to is Dethklok, Killswitch, and bands that my buddies are in like Thrash compactor and Arsonists get all the girls.

I dont know classifications or categories so Im not even sure whether what Im listening to is Metal, or what type of metal it is.
I just like the violence while Im driving.

It really is.

Record deals suck and usually if you don't make it really big leave you broke and in debt or just barely breaking even.

Touring these days just means you get some doucher off myspace to call a bunch of shithole clubs around the country to pay you in alcohol and $35 a person. While you sit in your rape van amongst all your equipment bickering about stupid shit with people who used to be your friends, but now are just tools to get your damn $35.

Shit. You foo's all talkin about rec deals and shit and didn't hit me up? Even IF it is easy to get signed, good luck getting an independent label to give you tour support. My 3rd metal band, Slaughter Solution signed to Melophobia Records early last year. We were supposed to Western tour with Graf Orlock, which consisted of going through Mexico, Cali, Oregon, Washington, and BC. It was a blessing that we couldn't get passports in time because we were lookin at MAYBE 500 bucks for tour support, and keep in mind, the label we were signed to produces a mass amount of Cattle Decapitation's merch, as well as in association with Job For A Cowboy's t-shirt artist.

Anyways, my friend Mark sings for a band called Blood Stands Still, signed to Mediaskare Records, an offshoot of Century Media Records, and they do massive tours with all sorts of bamf bands like Terror, As Blood Runs Black, etc... They barely have enough money to eat, and when they get home from tour, they work day jobs.

Forgot to mention, I own and operate an independent Hardcore, Progressive, Expiremental record label. And I don't pay anyone shit! I just hook them up with dope management, show support, and get them on their ways to getting signed to a bigger, better label.

Just saw a documentary on Palladia "Metal Head, A Headbangers Journey" pretty good, kind of touched on the roots of metal in general and all the stereo tyoes that go with it.

I never knew about Mayhems lead singer blowing his brains out then all the members of the band made necklaces with fragments of his skull............thats pretty fucking metal.

^ Yeah that is like legendary epic story. After he did that, the band used the photograph of him with his brains all blown out as an album cover. I have a book that documents and details the black metal scene in Scandanavia in the early nineties. Crazy stuff man.

Isn't that odd?

I'm in my best moods when I listen to the heaviest, darkest, most demonic music.

And on the other side of the spectrum, happy-go-lucky, Ned Flanders music puts me in the worst mood. Like starting a fight with someone twice my size type of mood.

My buddy just introduced these guys to me. Not bad.
