STI Performance | IMPREZA S204 | TECHNICAL NOTE (http://www.subaru-sti.co.jp/s204/technicalnote/damper.html)

has anyone here attempted to install, run, and test the above body damper? i've noticed certain newer cars like the nismo Z come with these.

just curious to see if anyone has any real feedback installing these on our older chassis.

Looks like an engine torque brace but for the undercarriage.

Closest thing I've seen to that was the Du-luck front/rear brace I installed on my s13. It did help stiffen up the chassis.
These cars are so old that they need all the bracing they can get just to feel like a new car. So if it isn't an ass load of money, sure.

cool it's like a solid brace that allows flex, probably to help from tweaking frame rails or breaking subframe welds. But you reinforced your subframes right? So this would just be for looks on your car.

its installed at the front-nose of the nismo Z to absorb chassis vibrations

here is an example installed on a z33

I am guessing that would eliminate possible cowl shake. It would probably be great on a convertible.

That's what I thought lol. This is a tough crowd to sell something like that to, since everyone who spends serious cash/does serious mods also puts in a roll cage (which is the gorilla of all chassis stiffeners)... so I don't know if anyone will be able to give any real feedback here.

i think you guys are mistaking this for a stiffening product.

this is not a product designed to stiffen to the chassis, its designed to absorb vibration. meaning, no matter how stiff a chassis is.. any chassis can suffer from resonance. just like the s15 subframe has a small rubber dampener at the edges, its to cancel out those resonating frequencies.

it appears a device like this may be beyond the interest of ghetto-engineered tuners out there (majority of people who spend money without really understanding the engineering behind things). and yeah, i too would be guilty of this (from time to time), even though i try to research things extensively, we simply dont have the same resources that the big manufacturers do. :( especially to prove the function and purpose of things like this.

though, i highly doubt yamaha developed and patented this for factory production, for nothing. it must serve a purpose.. and i doubt its not useless. im curious what other vehicles use this.

call yamaha marketing then, you know people. LOL!!! I don't know if I would stiffen the chassis of my car and then try to add in vibration dampners, at that point in the game it's almost pointless. You're past the point of the car creaking here and there since the whole car is just going to vibrate it's ass off anyway with a stiffer chassis.

I have semi solid motor mounts and now it feels like I am piloting a 2000lb vibrator when i'm at a stop. Now if it can do anything for me in that department, I'm all ears.

Shit.

Me wants now.

Old age has made me appreciate a car that doesn't rattle and buzz.

Ya I could sell you a set of my Urethane engine mounts that are stiffer than Nismo mounts and will not rattle your car like a vibrator.

Back to the topic, Its basically a chassis damper to reduce oscillations in the chassis.

Up front it would tie the strut towers together and eliminate the possible separate oscillations of each strut tower due to different affects from the road to each rotating wheel transferring vibrations into the strut and to the strut tower.
According to the STI site it improves turn in handling in corners. It would be interesting to try it out on a S chassis.

I wonder if that 350Z unit can be bought and adapted to different usages.

Which would require me to lift the motor again, something i'm not prepared to do at all unless the motor is coming out, I hate disassembling the motor to get to them.

nismo also make it for R32,R33,R34 GTR as well.
might be able to fab it to work on s chasis

With my subframe project near complete now, I'll pickup one (or two) of these dampers and do a test fit when I remove my bumper to install my bumper stiffeners. Should be interesting.

I have those JGS urethane mounts and torqed down to spec and they dont vibrate at all, unless the poly has seperated from the aluminum.

Mine are not the JGS ones and the poly will not separate they have been lift tested to 5000Lbs.

Oh and yes this was an off topic shameless plug.

Back on topic I am seriously thinking about the Yamaha dampers or even the Nismo R32's as a lot of R32 stuff fits on S13's.

We keep the ones for the Z in stock. Not something that sells a lot, but everyone who has bought them likes them.

Pretty pricey in the end too.

that is no pricey.

GTRs can run the front and rear. And the rear one ties into the rear strut towers like a strut tower bar. Interesting. I wonder if the lengths will be similar enough for them to be retrofitted to S and Z chassis usage.
