Are there more adult themed anime (don't mean hentai)?

seems like most of it is made for kiddies and somewhat formuliac.
whenever I watch anime, I get the depressing feeling like I'm watching a soap opera.
it's almost always about some predictable good guy fights bad guy type story.

I don't mean adult in say lots of boobs and sex.
(if I wanted that sort of thing, cartoons would be just be strange).
I stuff like it explores themes catered more towards ppl a little older,
has some complexity in the plot.

All else fails, I'll stick to regular japanese films and fiction, which I enjoy a lot.

Why some ppl have a fetish with that Hentai stuff (japanese pornos with cartoon characters),
is something I will never understand and find terribly disturbing.

Judging by your list, we have similar taste. I would definitely suggest Serei No Moribito: Guardian of the Sacred Spirit. It's really good. Probably one of my all time favorites.

Disclaimer - Watching it subtitled is a MUST though. Unfortunately, cartoon network recently got a hold of it and dubbed it. I watched one episode just to hear how they did the english voices and my head nearly exploded from the lameness. Its literally like 3 people doing the entire cast ON TOP OF having absolutely no emotion. HORRIBLE.

Also...

Trigun
Claymore
Cowboy Bebop
all classics!

Full Metal Alchemist is good too. Despite the more kiddish anime style its a surprisingly dark themed series. After you finish the series, watch the movie too. Note: There's also the Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood series that came out later, but its basically the same shit.

:loco:

WTF?! There's action from the very first episode! Unlike most shit anime, this series actually explains the backgrounds of characters and develops them properly throughout the series all while maintaining an excellent story line. It was really quite progressive. Definitely not stagnant....i.e. bleach, naruto, etc.

Sounds like somebody has a really short attention span...

I guess if you need constant explosions, fight scenes, no real story, and typical "characters flying around in front of colorful moving backgrounds screaming their actions" then yeah its slow....

To the OP, judging by the animes you listed, i highly doubt you'll find the series slow.

Understandable considering the Japanese to English thing they do. It won't be perfect.

Anyhow, I have a friend who wants me to go to a anime convention in KC this february. What should I expect?

An anime convention will be quite the experience. Most people will be dressing up as their favorite anime character. A huge majority will be nerdy/weird kids. A handfull will probably be decent looking chicks. Tons of anime/"japanese" stuff will be on sale like swords, books, toys, and other various shit.

Ok. Everything after episode 25 of the original anime? Fuck that shit. Including the movie.

They started animating the show before they were done writing the story, so when the show caught up to the manga, they dumped 26 episodes of filler bullshit on us and a dumbass filler movie. The Dante storyline was retarded.

The new series' first 15 episode are pretty much a recap of the old series and manga's beginning. Pretty much up to the first time you meet Greed. After that, it's all new! It pretty much follows the manga exactly now and I'm telling you... the manga is among the best that I've EVER read.

Also, as good as the old series was, once you watch the new series with it's superior animation quality, watching the old stuff with it's (now) wack storyline will make you want to gouge your eyes out. However, the music doesn't really get good in the new series until you get past all the 15 episode recap stuff.

Seriously, go watch it. NOW.

HELL YES....SON, Focker and Shin were pretty original and for once there was a unexpected ending, Focker was one hell of a womanizer and ace. Sharon apple was ground breaking too, great character development: guld and isamu were the same character as was Meung and Sharon.

Macross Frontier is alright, to be honest I feel that the series went soft, I got the dvd set and I don't really bother to watch it. Its just not the same macross I grew up with.

Wangan Midnight's driving scene looks pretty, but everything else about that show is ass. Not that Initial D's story is Pulitzer Prize worthy, but it makes Wangan Midnight look really crappy. You're better off continuing the Initial D story, which is till going in manga form.

The first 10 minutes of Zero gave you a really gove indication of how good it was going to be. To see Shin nearly outfly and get a missle lock on a Veritech in his F14 Tomcat... You just knew this guy was going to be badass when he gets his hands on a Thunderbolt...

Wow a few were named in here that i too highly suggest.

Higurashi no naku koro ni, kai, rei : All are badass. If you want something to make you think, and don't mind alot of fucked up shit, then yes this series is for you. Horror, mystery.

Gundam (Any gundam, Turn A was kinda weak tho, same with Gundam X) : Giant robots, teen angst, and some crazy epic fights, FUCK YEAH!

Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood : This show is fucking sweet. The other show sucked because they improvised a great deal of the show. It was ok at the time, but I was also reading the manga. This one is atleast 1000x better. Follows the manga almost exactly. Its some REAL GOOD SHIT.

GTO (Great Teacher Onizuka) : You seriously can't go wrong. Infact you would have to try to hate this series. Its that good.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann : I love it. Seriously. Being a hardcore gundam fan its hard to say another mech anime can top it, but this is by far tied with everything gundam as my all time favorite. The music is great, story is fucking insane, and character growth is fantastic. The character designs are a bit from the norm, but if a 27 episode series can spawn two full length feature films, it must be pretty fucking good.

Escaflowne : Starts kinda slow, but then goes into some crazy shit. Good overall.

I can't believe noone mentioned this one but...

Code Geass & Code Geass R2 : Hardcore strategy anime. Rebellion, revenge, deceiption, and a whole shitload of insane battles. The mech fights are intense, the story grips you, and the rest.... well I can't give away any details. By far a must see, along with Gurren Lagann.

Also, I know this is a gundam series, but seriously check it out. By far, a completely solid gundam series...

Gundam 00 : HD, changes up the traditional gundam styles a lil bit, changes up the colony vs earth basis of previous gundam series, and an extremely twisted story. Its one of the darkest gundam series since Mobile Suit Gundam, and Victory Gundam. You will be on the edge of your seat.

I don't stream my stuff, I torrent. If you want info on that just pm me. I've helped out a couple of members before. Watching it from your comp is so much better than streaming. Fuck streaming.

Blade of the Immortal anime is TERRIBLE. I am not kidding.

Kenshin is among the greatest ever. Here's my recommendation for the best and most impacting Kenshin experience.

-Watch straight thru until just before Saitoh Hajime shows up and then stop. Then watch all of 'Trust' and 'Betrayal'. Your view of Kenshin will change forever at that point.
-Pick up where you left off with the show & watch the series until end of the Shishio arc.
-Then jump over to the manga and read the Enishi arc before finally watching the final movie 'Reflections'. YOU WILL CRY.

Kenshin is the greatest love story I've ever seen, disguised as a semi-historically accurate, Samurai action show...

funny people put down Naruto, Shippunden has been great so far, all action. With any anime, you cant just jump in the middle and expect to like it from watching 1 episode, you gotta start at the beginning to follow it and know whats going on.

For realz... Naruto has the best ongoing story of anything out and has been going strong for over 10 years now. Can't just hop in at year 7 and then start saying how stuff is stupid and doesn't make sense...:duh:

naruto is boring only because some of us jaded anime fans have already seen a million 'guy must develop fighting techniques to confront enemies who become friends or friends who have become enemies and redeem x-character or alternatively have that character die tragically, whether by hero's hands or as a self sacrificial final redemption etc etc etc.'

someday, naruto will end. years will pass. some kids are going to tell you that some anime is the greatest show ever. and you will think to yourself, this shit is just like naruto, but crappier. then you might make a post on the forum telling them so, like i am now.

Kenshin is the greatest love story I've ever seen, disguised as a semi-historically accurate, Samurai action show...

completely agree with your views of kenshin. however i just finished first four episodes of "blade of the immortal" and its not bad.

as for naruto. i have watched a decent amount of anime. been doing so since i was 15. honestly i freaking love naruto. the filler got a bit annoying and almost made me stop watching. thankfully they got back on track. i really enjoy the fact that he is actually growing up, getting older, and getting better. yes i know its a re-hashed storyline in its basic principles, but they have been doing a pretty darn good job of making it enjoyable. really hope we get to see him make it all the way to hokage as an adult. that would be pretty damn cool. also feel its one of the longest animes that doesnt get overly repetitive in the way DBZ did. still enjoyed every minute of DBZ, but got a bit annoying when characters just didnt die or somehow came back for another fight.

Lots of hot chicks with hardly nothing on, with a bunch of perves with a hard on looking!

Hmmm....

Unless the "scene" has changed enormously, most of the chicks who cosplay at conventions aren't what I'd call "hot".

Now, the last con I went to was Otakon '04, which is a big con, but it was awhile ago, so given that anime is a little more mainstream now, the tail might be hotter.

Anyone in DC want to go to Katsucon in February? I'll only go for a day, but this is making me want to hit up a con and I never seem to be free in Jul/Aug anymore for Otakon.

Well, IMO, blade of the Immortal's OST was God-awful. This goes a long way towards whether or not I'll like a show. If the music is bad, thats a huge strike against the show. Secondly, I felt the fights weren't animated particularly well for what the show was trying to go for. I'll admit, the storyline was interesting, but the presentation couldn't keep my interest past 6 episodes...

About Naruto, anyone who criticizes Naruto as standard anime fare is retarded. In over 15 years of anime watching, Naruto has kept my interest for 10 of them. What other series shows such detailed character growth, evokes so much raw emotion from its readers and kills as many of it's characters? the show does such an excellent job of showing everybodies motivations for doing whatever they're doing (an element missing in most other anime). If some of the thematic points of Naruto are familiar to you from other shows, it's for two reasons: ALOT of it is based of ancient myths which alot of other anime draw inspiration from as well; And the creator sometimes pays homage to older series that he was a fan of when he was younger (ie Dragonball).

End rant.

But you know one manga that needs to get animated ASAP? Veritas. Seriously, this shit is good.
