Occasionally when the car idles the rpm will fluctuate a bit between 700-1000. Like it will drop down to 7 and go back up to 10, and it does it maybe 3 times and then settles. I'm afraid its a symptom of a much bigger problem. any ideas as to what it could be? thanks.

Check all your vacuum hoses. Sounds like one might be off.
are you running rich? could be your o2 sensor. I had this same problem. Swapped in a new o2 sensor and it all stopped :)

Most likely it is a clogged Idle Air Adjustment Valve. This valve keeps the engine from stalling when the throttle plate is closed.
Steps for cleaning IAAV.
1. Locate and remove the large rubber hose that starts under the TB and Terminates in the intake tube.
2. spray Throttle Body cleaner in to the metal tube that the hose was plugged in to. Let sit for how ever long the instructions dictate.
3. Replace the hose and start car. Let run untill the exhaust color returns to normal. Repeat if needed.
