hey, im looking at a 1995 240 sx. what editions do the 1995s come in? this one is a SE, is that the one with the LSD in it already? the guy wants 4,900 for the car it has 112,000 miles on it. water pump was replaced and brakes were done too. the engine runs fine no rattles or anything. the body needs some work, it has scatches and some dents over the entire car(in different places). also its only had 2 owners, if i were to buy it i will be the third. what do you guys think i should offer the guy or should i even buy the car?
thanks

if it has abs, chances are that it has vlsd.
if you look underneath the car, there might be, if you're lucky, an orange sticker that says "viscous lsd" on the rear diff.
also you can pick up the rear end of the car and turn the wheels in neutral.
if they turn in the same direction, you've got vlsd.
if you want to try, you could do a burn out launch. if you see two tire marks on the ground, you've got vlsd.

that car is a bargain for $4900. i'd take it in a heartbeat if i was lookin for an s14.. it doesn't really matter if you're going to be upgrading or not.. b/c if i bought that car, brakes would go for zbrakes or aftermarket of that sort. (ie, 4 pistons or 6 pistons ap racing or stillen 300zx calipers) and vlsd will only be there temporarly till i get a clutch type lsd in.

Wow, that sounds like a deal. Some people have not picked up on the fact that these cars are becoming MORE desirable, and the prices are actually going up. I looked at a 91' coupe @ the local BMW dealer: 6,000 dollars, 108,000 miles, interior looked rough and the car was gold with a 5 speed. As I was busy telling them the book value is 2,300 dollars - it sold.
The 95 SE should have the LSD and 5 lug wheels. Also, I think they had anti-lock brakes (that work) on the SE and LE's.

95s had an optional package that had abs AND vlsd paired together and iirc it was expensive as all hell. so if it has abs it has vlsd. what other options does it have? could be leather, 6 speaker sound system (look for tweeters in the a pillar), think they all came with alloys.
at any rate that is a great price for that car. about the scratches and dents; around here we have a place called dent wizard who takes out dents for cheap and does a good job. im willing to bet there is a place like that around there where you could take it and have those dents taken care of. for the scratches, take your finger nail and run it perpendicular to the bigger scratches. if you feel anything they cannot be buffed out, but if your fingernail just runs over it, you can get a buffer and rubbing compound and buff them out.
moral of the story is that id buy it.

Damn everyone wants me to get the car....the clutch pedal squeaks when you put the clutch in(easy fix?). also the scratches and dents...dont you think that will cost a fortune to get fixed etc? Going to dent wizzard and then getting the car painted will cost over 2,000.00 i would think. then you think the engine has 112,000 miles on it, isnt that a lot. i wanna boost but i dont know if that engine can take it. then you might say get a silvia engine. well what about E check, we have that every 2 yrs in ohio. what do you guys think now?
i was gonna offer him 4,000.00 cash if i do decide to get it.
Zak
I would buy it wether it has abs/lsd or not. thats a good price. I have a 1995 240sx se and I love it so far. at 108k and it still pulls strong. Who cares about the dents...(unless they bug you that much.. then dont fix them tell you get a bodie kit. (Most of mine will be gone when I convert the front to a 97/98 or a S15).
As for the engine. I would work on the rest of the car 1st. Coilovers, wheels, Better swaybars..... and on and on. My shocks were GONE! I would replace everything that wares 1st (at least thats what I did) Make sure its in top condition. (Then look at engines)
Ohh yeah and the peddle is a cheep fix.. the shop did something to mine for 10$ and it has not made a peep in the last 2 years.

I just bought a 95 also. Mine was a base model, but came with every option the base could have. ABS/VLSD, Premium sound, sunroof, pw, pl, 5spd, and I got it for $3300 on March 20, 2003. Only thing with it is some body work that would retail to about $800 easy...but I did say retail. And also, engine had 173.5k on it adn now has nearly 178k. But anyways, this car has everything I wanted (except the 5 lug hubs) and I got a mad deal on it. If you can talk the guy down to $4k, then more power to ya, but I'd say at the speed at which these cars aer being sold, I'd grab it.

My car didn't come equipped with a VLSD and I remember having two tire marks on the road after a launch.

Get used to it....it will happen every now and then but is always solved with some WD-40.

well this is what i got...1995 pearl white 5 speed. it has 29,339 original miles on it and i picked it up for 7,900.00. everything looks great on the car. i have a problem with the clutch squeaking when i put it into gear. it sounds like its coming from under the car near the tranny but im not sure. the one other problem is the weather stripping on the back pass side door. i can hear road noise and need to fix bc i think it may leak. does anyone know how to get to the glass? do i take the outside stripping off?
other than those two things everything is great. ive already put in a B&M short shifter in(lot of road noise). is there anything i can do to help with the noise like adding some type of sounds deadening material?
thanks

I guess i didn't explain myself clearly last time. But anyways here it goes, If you want to solve the squeaky clutch problem do the following. Get under the steering wheel, inside the car, and follow the clutch pedal up. You will find that there is a spring attatched to it. Press the clutch with your hand and it should be from there that the squeak is coming from. What you do now is take some WD-40 and spray that spring and keep pressing the clutch until you're satisfied with the quietness. You'll probably end up doing that every so often because it's common.

That "chirping under the car" sound might be the throw out bearing? With the mileage so low, it could be a little dry. I'd just keep driving it, as it will some times stop with use. Otherwise, you will have to drop the tranny to change it. Sounds like you got a really good deal. Only problem with that low mileage is that it will take a long time to blow the KA motor ... and replace it with an SR.

What!? It's never a problem to have a low mileage engine. The only problem I can come up with is when you buy a new car and you have to wait while breaking it in before you drive it hard, now that's a problem;) . A new KA is a perfect opportunity to turbo the 2.4L beast, if you have money left over or money you can come up with.

ill check out that clutch spring tomorrow juan. i spent all my money on the car so ill have to make some before i buy anything new. this is what i want to get next....lowering springs, STB's, sway bars, wheels. and maybe a brake upgrade depending on the money i have left.
turbo ka will be next yr, ill prob do a custom one so it will cost a little less.
