Anyone install hood struts and make a custom job of it? I was thinking of getting some off a hatchback something-or-other at a junkyard and hooken em up to the hood on my 240..just for something to do.
anyone ever do this and have any luck?
how?

*sits back and grabs some popcorn for this one.
I read and reread your post and have to admit I never even considered struts up front. You'd have to get some heavy duty struts and then bang out some math on where and what angle to place them so that they would be able to support the weight of the hood.
If you're looking for DIY's to kill time, why not paint the interior trim of your car?

Oh god no.
What, bright green or yellow? Then I can get a matching steering wheel cover, pedals and shifter knob!
I want hood struts, they would be cool!

I've been contemplating the weight of hood struts to the weight of the hood stand :P That's the only thing really preventing me from doing anything about it.
Definitely possible, and you'll definitely need to make your own brackets. The hardest part is going to be finding points where you can safely attach the hydraulics to. Places that are well structurally supported.

It's been done on s14's and there's actually a kit that's available to do it. S13's i'm not sure about. I happen to have an extra pair of struts right now, so I was thinking about doing it. Unfortunately, there doesn't really seem to be any room for it. I would like to figure out something better than that little prop rod though... it scares me only having the support on one side, it seems like it could warp the hood after a while.
edit: Well, I was searching for the site that had the conversion done, and it seems to be down...
If anyone remembers the site, it had this car on the front:
