View Full Version : A New Era - Datsun 1600 Build

I picked up a new toy today, moving away from the s-chassis until I have lots and lots of disposable income for tire burning and the likes. By then drifting will probably be dead though so fuck it.
It's not exactly an s-chassis or a Z, it pre-dates them both. The grandma if you will.
It was quite an interesting expereince driving it the 30 some odd minutes home on the back roads having never driven a car with a manual choke before, on top of the fact that the brakes are shot and it has been sitting for a good long while.

By the end of this week the interior and hardtop will be painted and Sparco Sprint buckets will be installed. I'll get to work on re-finishing all the chrome and putting the trim and grill back on. I will be doing the Volvo brake conversion for the time being so I can drive it around, new carbs, wider wheels, try to get some fender flares to work, and the brake air-duct bumper spoiler.
I will post up progress, expect updates fast.
Ladies, don't think I forgot about you.

Somewhere down the road I will swap in a KA or SR.
For now I am just going to leave it be, lots of other things to focus on and keep me busy that won't eat my wallet.
Im surprised you even fit in that thing lol.
I actually fit quite nicely thanks to the seats being so damn low, no issues at all with that. Now my feet on the other hand make the whole braking and gas thing difficult, I think the pedal layout was designed for those Thai chicks who had their feet smashed.
neat car bro. i like L series motors.

Thanks neither can I. It'll also be interesting to have a car that pulls chicks and not teenage dick. Although, it will probably pull lots of old guy dick as well. :cj:

Yeah no rust/dents/dings the interior needs a bit of work so that's getting attention asap. Then I can get onto the bits that make it go and such.
I'll put up some more pictures once I put some of the trim back on and do the aforementioned sprucing up.

$3.5-4k for one that is in similar condition typically. Many have some rust issues or something though so look out.
Mileage isn't that much of a factor, I find a lot if not most of these have pretty low mileage since they have been weekend warriors or been in storage for most of their existence.

My buddy has a Datsun Z from the early 70's, with an RB25 in it.
Also has custom widebody fenders and 15x10 with 225s stretched to fit.
Handles like shit, right now, but he is doing suspension soon. R200 diff. Gonna go top mount with a custom manifold probably.
let me know if you want more pics, it's pretty wild:

Yea there are a few running around with decent wheels on em. Most of the people who own them are older, so fitment isn't on their "to do" list.. haha

In the long run yeah I most definitely will. In the short term... not likely. I just need to get it looking kind of cool and road worthy. This is more of a long-term deal in my eyes sure right now I just want a funky little car that will look cool, but has the potential to evolve into a half resto/half balls out project down the line that I can enjoy for many years. The type of car god willing if I ever have a kid I could pass down and have him tinker on with me as a chitlin.
Not just some janky pos s13 that I can throw some money at and go destroy.

It has the stock r16 4spd.
I could put a KA in it, KA and SR even CA swaps are pretty common.
Mine doesn't have a rag top. It's either hard top on or off for now. The hard top is in good condition but the paint is faded. I will be fixing that this weekend.
If I ever make serious power to where I need a new rear I would probably just do a Ford 9".

Thats because it was the predecessor to the Z. It was a Fairlady 1600 and there was also the Fairlady 2000. The Z is the Fairlady 240Z.

Eric they came with R16's which is a completely different motor from the L Series, they also came with H160 rear ends the 2000's had H190's I recall. I.E. solid live axle. rear leaf spring with shocks suspension.
They were basically NIssan's answer to the MG.
It has the stock r16 4spd.

Actually they were campaigned heavily in SCCA by BRE and a lot of privateers as well as some dealers. Datsun comp used to stock all kinds of performance parts for them and there still are some parts for them in the Nismo catalog. They used to sell clutch pack diffs for them. I would check with Nismo you never know.
putting a Ford 9 inch in that car would be serious overkill lol . Even with a SR a H190 could handle the power . The 2000's came with a dual SU 2liter engine stock and they sold a dual 44 Mikuni Solex package for the 2000 engine as well.

the 510 was the biggest success imo.
With Peter Brock and John Morton, and a little Paul Newman to bring em out into the mainstream :)
Car should be alot of fun man.
Definatly jealous.
If you ever wanna build a L18 engine, i might let you have my "how to hotrod your datsun" book. Think ive read about 100 plus books in the last 13 years, and thats one of the only ones i still have with me, lol

Ya Eric, same with me. I had a roadster for a nano second. My 510 was so superior it was not funny.
If he builds a L18 then he should put 1.73inch 280Z valves in the head and port it. He should also install flat top Z pistons. Hehehehe just recalling some the work I did on my first ever engine build. Sidedraft webbers baby. Easy to tune and hauled ass. LOL Oh and yes I own the How to Hot Rod your Datsun 510 book as well Eric. It was the bible for 510 owners.
Of course at this point in time what I really want is another 240z.

At the same time we took off the hard top and sprayed the problem spots, tomorrow it will get a few good even coats. Even with shitty spray it looks better being a dark black.

I think that has a big part to do with it. With the the 240 it's like yeah I could spend money and slap parts on it just to have it join the ranks of every other modded 240. It just feels like a waste of time, money, resources...

It's certainly not as common as der 510 and 240z's either.
At least you can throw in whatever engine and not be harassed by the police.

just cuz you dont have to smog the car, that dose not mean the original smog equip. can be removed.....
as a fellow user found out and i found out a long time ago when i was pulled over but not ticked for it (ka in a 510)..... IF you do a motor swap you will have to go to the BAR to get it fully legal just as in any other car.

Yeah, probably custom. It looks like a lexan window in a custom/modified frame. It probably wouldn't be too hard to make.I searched aroung for one and couldn't find anything. Japanese Nostalgic Car forums might be a good place to check out though. It would be pretty sweet, rippin' aroung with no windshield... until it rained.
Something cool I spotted on Datsun.org:

Not really. There is a good cult following of a bunch of older, very knowledgeable guys and pretty much every part you can want is still available new or refurbished from a few different sites and catalogs.
Factoid: While most people say that the Datsun Roadsters are just copies of the MG, the Datsun came out in Japan 3 months before the MG debuted.

I left the car outside without the cover on when I went on vacation to NYC. The windows were down and it rained in there for a few hours. Came back to a nice bit of surface rust all over the bare metal in the interior when I was paint prepping it. Stupid shitty mistake.

usafdarkhorse approves, from another Datsun owner.
Would love to pick up a Fairlady roadster at some point.
Thats because it was the predecessor to the Z. It was a Fairlady 1600 and there was also the Fairlady 2000. The Z is the Fairlady 240Z.
They actually didn't have the "240Z" in Japan, specifically because Fairlady Zs didn't come with the L24, rather they had the L20. So, if they had the alphanumeric system like they introduced on their Z cars in America, it would have been the "200Z"

Ah no actually you could get them with a L20A or a L24, it also came with a L18SSS option. Oh and the Fairlady 432Z option which they only made 500 of. Which had the S20 Dual overhead 2 liter six that had triple Mikuni's and put out 175HP. Which also came in the GC10 Skyline GTR.
So you see they did actually have alphanumeric Z's in Japan too. Just not many of them. LOL
Oh and engine sizes were tied to insurance costs as well. So most people tended towards smaller displacement engines to save money. Care to know any more facts abut the Japanese domestic market?
I suggest before you single a long time member out for their facts you study who they are. They might actually be older than you and know a lot more than you guessed.
Plus if you really are a true Z car fan you would own a 70-73 S30 not a 75 as 280's were pigs with terrible engines. Ya I looked at your profile noob.

Pipe down skippy. My mistake :hs:. Somewhere in the recesses of my mind I had forgotten the L24 was also present in Japan. Now I know the L28 wasn't.( Australians have all the fun ). I was aware of the 432. Would love to have the head off the thing.
It is still the same in Japan about displacement versus insurance ( and tax ) and it helped to drive the 90's era of turbo cars. It's also why many people in Europe drive diesels.
You also might want to take a step back and reevaluate your position since you don't really know me either ( I don't know whether to be flattered or what ). Didn't mean any harm. Sure a 240Z is fun and raw, but a 280Z is stouter. Would like to pick up a '70 at some point ( keep it mostly OEM ), but I'm having a good bit of fun with my '75 ( with nowhere near the stock engine, or anything else, mind you ).
Let's get back to this man's build thread instead of bantering on.
