View Full Version : Brake pads rubbing against rotor while driving?

First off, my car has been sitting for about 3 months but even before that I've noticed a sound, particularly as im passing something like a wall or a car. It sounds like metal spinning against metal. What's the best process to troubleshoot this? I noticed too that when I was fixing my car as I was pushing it somewhere I could hear the brake pads rubbing against the rotors. I figured it was doing that because it was sitting for so long.

ok did you even look to see if the brake pads are rubbing the rotors? That the sound is coming from there. possibly the brake shield rubbing against the rotor..?

Of course I did, they're right against the rotors, It didn't occur to me that it could be the brake shield though.

The brake pads always sit against the rotor on any car. It's not like when you let the pedal off the piston pulls back in and leaves a gap, otherwise next time you applied the brakes your entire pedal effort would go to just reseating the pads, and you would then either have to press the pedal again or run into the object you're trying to avoid.

How much contact is your question here. Front, or rear? The rear calipers always seize up on an Schassis, so that's a definite possibility. Fronts rarely do but could be frozen from sitting, so instead of guessing, jack the car up and verify which caliper is the issue.

Have you checked how much meat you have left on the pads? lol maybe it's time for new brake pads and they are riding on the squeelers.

on my s14 my rear caliper seized(ebrake wouldnt release) so i got some pb blaster and sprayed the ebrake spring and played with the spring a little bit and got it to work awesome now... there was rust, dirt ect on it...

I think you need new brake pads, could be the tabs inside the pads letting you know that you need new ones.

Something similar happened to me...except the noise was hardcore. Turned out to be the brake shield so check that first. I took off the pads as well and cleaned up the discs to be sure. Noise went away :boink:

Check to see if your sliders are seized. I get a lot of customers coming in complaining about their brakes dragging. All it takes is some heat, some vice grips and a wire wheel to clean them up. Then re-grease them.

Way past that now, had a long list when I got it but just a few more things and everything will be good. Honestly? I didn't initially take my wheels off because I didn't know what I was looking for but like I said I'll check it. Peace.

warn wheel bearings will cause that. the rotor will move slightly with the hub..

check your bearings. under racing conditions it can be pretty drastic its called knock back

I have endless SSS pads w/ drilled/slotted rotors. They make a noise constantly while in motion, and I can hear them especially loud when passing a fence/guardrail etc. Are you running drilled/slotted rotors? It might just be normal noise.

No but I will be buying slotted rotors very soon. My front pads and rotors need to be replaced.

weird, first thing i would have done was i dunno maybe check what was wrong with it, i don't make a thread until i've worked on it for a week straight and i'm so lost that i'm about to set my car on fire and watch it burn, oh and just a little f.f. there is a section for things like this called tech talk :l101:

try pushing the caliper back in that was my problem
