This is something I came across while on motor maven. This shit is so fcuking sick. Thought I would share it with you all. Enjoy.
Heres the article.
CENTER STAGE> Shakotan S30 240Z – MotorMavens (http://motormavens.com/2009/10/center-stage-shakotan-s30-240z/)

great looking car.
but nothing new.
the hot rodders have been doing the rusted look along with the VW guys for quite awhile.
I sold my rusty and faded VW for my 240, lol.

Japan is just catching on with some of thier drift cars, so its about time we followed the automotive trend.
Oh how this is gonna piss the purist off, lol.
I have had secret car plans for over a year with this look, just waiting to move out and get a garage and a new shell.
was hoping to be ahead of the trend, but it looks like it hit the shores of LB and Motor Mavens caught it.
good work to Antonio and the rest of the Mavens!
would like to see the car get a fully built and carbed straight six.
non of that sr or rb swaps the Z guys do.

I am going to side on the when its finished line. Though it does kinda have a dope look to it now. It kinda takes me back to my 510 days in High school. LOL Palo Alto. hahahahaha.
While I like how low it is, it would indeed be a pain to drive on the street. Hell don't even think about LA. LOL
Oh and the Integra shocks is old news. Back in the late 80's ITS Z cars were taking Integra struts/shocks and converting them to coils because they were shorter than Z struts and they could drop the car more for track.
Yuta if you are reading this? Which you probably are, lol, keep up the good work man.
Congrats to Yuta for pulling the old school style of making something work instead of just buying off the shelf shit.

thanks for all the compliments guys!
its not done!
i bought the car bone stock 5 months ago and started working on it a couple months ago!
it will be painted.
it will have a decent power plant.
ill work out all the small details and imperfections.
with that said, thanks again guys.
oh and just for the record, im not going for a rat rod look. that's how the paint looked (minus the brown fender, i replaced the wrinkled stock fender with that one) when i bought it. i bought it for the interior and the lack of serious rust. i considered primering it for JCCS but decided against it as i would have sanded it off any way as it would be no good after a couple months of daily driving it.

agreed +1000, i dont see how rust on a car can be even remotely attractive, but to each their own, it'd look a million times better with a good paint job though.

Very cool the dudes on here.
I actually really like that rusty/rat look.
although yours isnt really like that.
But I like how it looks.
has a real feeling of taking something people thought of as expendable, unvalued junk and saying, HEY, this can still be a great and functioning car.
you can still do really cool stuff with this, dont throw it away.
I just kind of like what the whole look states.
This guy below builds some amazing Z cars.
And this thing handles on the Autocross.
He will tell you he prefers the SR over RB swap.
The SR sits behind the front wheels! :)

I really think the rusty look is just an excuse for people not to care about their paint. In which case, I'm just going to stop washing my car, let it sit on the side of the road for the winter, and post some pics up in the summer.
IT WILL LOOK AWESOME!
BTW: I don't mind the rusted out look, that was just my opinion. lol

Most of the high end hot rods are actually painted to look rusty and it cost alot more than regular paint.
also, that whole copper oxidized look, thats paint as well.
Now the cars with rusted out cancer holes in Japan that they drift.
they decided to take something that was thrown away by society and get a little more use out of it.
I gotta respect that kind of mentality.
it may not be worth fixing the whole thing to just have a little fun for a few years, but its worth saving instead of putting it into a landfill or continuing to let it go to waste.
Just because something isnt perfect, doesnt mean it should be thrown away. And just cause its gonna take some time to fix something, doesnt mean you still cant enjoy it during the process.

Not gonna lie, I've been fapping to this car for a solid week.
I realize that this car is kind of a love-it-or-hate-it kinda thing, but to me, the way it sits right now is perfect. The exposed weld-burn-marks-whatever (Don't know jack about welding), the mis-matched front fender, the rust, the camber, the stretch, the large(er) fasteners (rivits?) on the overs, the height, the removed rear bumper, everything.
Not to nut-swing or anything, but I can confidently say this is the best looking Nissan/Datsun I've ever seen. Period.
Please don't paint it :P

i thought you of all people would read the majority of a thread before posting in it. but for my own sake i would like to once again state that this car is not done by any means, it will be painted, it will have a different engine, and as i am doing all the work i can assure you that everything will be done properly. also, i would like to share with you that the car has very little rust, the interior is why i bought the car - the paint under the carpet is perfect. I tend to not care much of what others think of my cars, and if i had meant for this to be the final product of the car i totally wouldnt care about what others said, however i'm slightly irritated that ignorance has caused people to assume that because the car has been featured on multiple publications this is how it is going to look forever (until of course it rusts into dust) and that i have owned it for longer than half a year after buying it bone stock.
anyhow, thanks for all the compliments gentlemen!
oh speedhunters is also doing a feature on it as well so check that out soon!

I think that is the overall problem Yuta.
You have the "Boso Beater Bandwagon" members that are touting your vehicles current condition as the their holy grail...
At the same time you have the "More Conservative Minded" members that are trying to express their interest in seeing the car FINISHED...
I don't think either are necessarily attacking you, or your car, as much as they are attacking each other's points of view.
The main point everyone is missing here is...
THIS IS NOT THE CARS FINISHED STATE.
IT WILL NOT CONTINUE TO LOOK THE WAY IT DOES IN THESE ARTICLES.
Essentially, it is "The Media's" fault for hyping your car and giving it so much coverage, before you are done with it. But I understand their interest in doing so, as it is outside of the mainstream norm for this chassis.
Good luck with the build Yuta.

Like I am pretty sure I posted on page 1.
the guys that actually do the rusted look spend thousands to paint it.
Its not real rust on the show cars.
People origianally didnt want thier cars to look like shit.
But they didnt want to throw something away because it was unsalvagable or not worth the thousands in body work.

http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh227/traderjay/pics-max-7803-306293-golf-mk1-ph-1.jpg
So they slammed a beat up cool car and decided to drive it for awhile before it goes to the junkyard like so much other wasted history of western civilization.
And like anything, it eveolved into its own style.
http://www.stanceworks.com/Pictures/E28/trailerIA2.jpg
just like drifting isnt the fastest way around a corner, but it evolved from doing things properly.
Rust/rat rod look, isnt the best way to have a cars exterior or paint, but it evolved and is an offshoot of doing it properly.
I couldnt find a picture of the car with the copper hood, that thing is awsome.

I've kinda kept it to myself for quite some time now, but i am really curious now as to why you have such distaste for my car? please don't get me wrong it doesn't bother me much, i just want to understand the mindset of people who start hate threads on my car on different forums and such, and to be frank i dont feel like signing up on other forums and the easiest way is to ask you. I understand its cool to hate on things that are popular, especially when the people making it so popular are of questionable intelligence, however i sense (from your other posts) that you are intelligent enough not to hate on something just because its cool to do so. so please, if it's not too much trouble - enlighten me.

I understand its cool to hate on things that are popular, especially when the people making it so popular are of questionable intelligence, however i sense (from your other posts) that you are intelligent enough not to hate on something just because its cool to do so. so please, if it's not too much trouble - enlighten me.
it's a beater s30 that looks like shit, and you're doing nothing to restore it. instead, you've turned it into a low rider.
s30's are sports cars, and it bothers me when one is modified to be a show piece that cannot perform as intended. this enormous-rims-almost-touching-fenders-but-not-quite trend takes decent sporty cars and makes them worthless on the street or track by compromising their suspension geometry for the most enormous rims they can stuff into the wheel wells, with no care for proper camber. this kind of crap belongs on cars that were sloppy to begin with, not something that was built to be driven and enjoyed.
but what REALLY bothers me is how something so shoddy looking is being treated as a show car. rat rods have always had their place, but now it seems the well thought out, restored, glossy cover car is dead, because it's so much cheaper and easier to see who can make the shittiest looking car, and that's not something our community or any, eventually, can sustain. if everybody were buying up Z's and letting them turn into buckets, we'd quickly run out of Z's. same for the s chassis, although their main enemy is a light post or street sign and amateur driving.
i'll cap this with the classics It's Nothing Against You and I Can Appreciate The Workmanship, But. obviously it takes some work to cram enormous wheels into wells with such precision, and make it sit with a stance that does, granted, look pretty cool. and i believe i read you have plans to paint it, but, right now, people aren't looking at it and going "oh man, this is going to look cool when it's painted", they're going "oh man, rusty shit is fucking sweet". this car (currently) represents two trends that i absolutely despise, and wish would go away in favor of something, ANYTHING, that would make fanboys start using the phrase "function over form" again.

Thanks for replying, i half thought you wouldn't.
What bothers me is that you represent one of the things i most despise, ignorance.
I kinda wish people would actually take a bit of time to read into the car, not just some online "publication". I would imagine that any website would try to feature controversial shit and make it sound even more "edgy" to generate views and attention. The suspension on that car is what i personally spent the most money on, not the wheels or the fiberglass body panels (i know, its shocking). Everything from the rear lower control arms, front lower control arms, tension rods to the tie rods are adjustable, reinforced and well not just there because they make my car look trendy, with the NRCAs my suspension geometry is actually pretty damn close to that of a stock car, and probably better than an example with just lowering springs.
I realize the car looks shitty from the outside, there is surface rust and a fender that came off a different car. but I chose this car for that exact reason, The only thing wrong with the exterior was one banged up fender (hence the one brown fender from a 280z) and some surface rust. The rest of the car is ridiculously clean at 63,000 miles, the interior is what really sold the car.
So let me just clarify one thing, this car is not following any "trend". If some kids want to think that its cool to make their new cars look like they have been at the bottom of the lake for 30 years im sorry that you had to see that, i didn't want to see it either. Its a bit of a shame all these magazines and websites didn't wait until the car was further along to feature it and its also a shame that they decided that presenting it as a piece of shit with big wheels would generate more ad revenue.
Well, it was nice talking, enjoy your new information.

I love both of these.

Honestly, I don't think the car should be "finished", I think it's perfect.
This is natural patina, not some case where a kid takes his EK hatch and starts rusting panels on purpose. It can't be a trend when it's the product of decades of natural aging and wear.

I love that people think that if you have flush wheels theres is NO WAY you can drive it still. Fucking stupid, look around theres so many cars that are pretty damn low and have flush wheels and still drive good. Of course there is limits to this just like everything else.
I feel bad for Yuta catching all this shit for his car when hes just trying to build something he will enjoy. Its really all this media attention thats turning this build into what its not. Keep up the good work, cant wait to see this thing painted. Any idea on color? or is that top secret info.

Lets see some pics of the interior?
How was the condition of the Dash? Mine was amazingly shitty, but the dash cap has fixed that...for now. Gonna get a clean uncracked one down the road.
