I just changed the water pump and thermostat hoping it would solve the problem... but it didnt. When I drive my car will overheat the needle will go up all the way past hot. then after a couple minuted it will drop all the way back down to where it normally runs. Can anybody tell me if there could be something wrong like a head gasket or it could be as simple as air bubbles in the cooling system?

You sure the sender and gauge are both good?
If so, it's an air pocket.

Sounds like an air bubble. You need to burp the coolant system to get the air out of it.

when this happened to me it was because i didnt bleed it thoroughly so definitely put that on the check list.

burp your baby!! sounds like trapped air to me. or in the long run might be temp sensor to gauge.
