i'll start edit: 2nd post.. lets get this (and the pro obama) thread going
regarding trade, Barack Obama is on his way to become maybe the worst White House occupant since Herbert Hoover. The magnitude of Obama's transgressions with Mexican trucking and Chinese tires are, in a narrow way, small. But they signal to the world that the U.S. is abandoning its 60-year tradition of free-trade leadership. The result will be leathal: everyone for himself-something like the world hasn't experienced since the 1930s.

Don't think McCain would have had a real chance.
It's pretty fair to say that after Bush's term,
the whole republican party got a neg rep.
They lost lots of seats in congress.
But to answer your question, idk.
I do think that (given his past record),
he has proven to be more of a moderate than Obama.
(Imo, Obama views verge on the FAR left)
Generally, I prefer moderates (Democrat, Rep, or Indie)
HOWEVER!!!!
What is absolutely horrifying is having Sarah Palin as the VP.
If McCain passes away, I don't want some right wing radical (& idiot) taking office.
I was leaning on voting for McCain until Palin showed up.
Clinton had some chance.
I DID vote for Hilary in the Democrat primaries.
Would have much preferred the relatively moderate (compared to Obama) Clinton in office.
At least you would have some idea of what to expect.
Think even the conservatives here (I don't consider myself one) would probably agree that would have been the lesser evil.

We needed a radical change. RP was probably the best candidate to improve on the economy and was the most conservative Republican in the party but the Toby Keith listeners couldn't take him seriously because of his lack of involvment in the church and he was so much of a different Republican than what the midstates has grown to know and love.
And with all this legalizing cannabis talk I'm not sure if this country is turning to a hybrid Libertarian state, maybe Barr was the man that could have made a difference.
Clinton probably would have been more conservative but may have been more proactive than Obama. She would have been the most likely candidate to actually make a change.
Giuliani was also another great leader but was way too cocky for the primary that McCain beat him out.
And to look back in the past, McCain SHOULD have been the Republican nominee in 99. Bush slandered his "friend" and his personal life. It turned to be very typical of the next 8 years. And who here really thinks that McCain would have done the same or worst than Bush? I don't. McCain would have more than likely stayed in Afghanistan until the job was done. IF McCain got the same intel that Bush got then he would have at least had a plan going into Iraq. The guy was a lifelong military man and Bush liked to say he served.

idk if Ron Paul really would have been the best for the economy 'today'.
It all depends on your stance in terms of government involvement in today's financial crisis, & how you predict Ron Paul would react.
Ron Paul might very well reject all economic stimulus packages,
given his stance on reduced government involvement in all matters.
The current recession would have most likely been hit a lot harder,
and economic recovery would take longer.
Inflation in the long term probably wouldn't be so much of an issue.
I am in the general opinion that some level of stimulus would have been beneficial, albeit probably not on the magnitude of the amount Obama is spending.
With Obama (other end of the spectrum?),
there is positive results in certain sectors of the economy.
the stock market IS improving.
It will take time for unemployment to make some improvement, but I'm optimistic.
Long term inflation will be serious concern.
Well, it has been since the Bush years, but might significantly worsen with all the spending and widening deficits.
In some respects, Obama is playing the odds very well, if he wants to get re-elected.
Shit-load of stimulus is going to get results faster.
It is entirely possible we might be out of the existing recession within 2 yrs (if not less).
Voters pay attention to the existing state of the economy far more closely than gradual changes in inflation.
A more moderate stimulus strategy might not be fast enough to produce good results in 4 yrs.
What is good for presidential re-election might not always be beneficial to the long-term economy.
Again, this is why imo Clinton would have been the best option
(this is the anti-Obama thread, not the anti-Democrat thread).
Allow equal parts, in moderation, government stimulus & economic cycles to work things out.
Regulate ONLY the factors that most likely contributed to the existing economic crisis.
Do NOT give out home loans to ppl who don't have sufficient credit.
Re-evalutate the 'Community Reinvestment Act' (google this if you don't know about it).
Do NOT allow balloon variable interest rate home loans.
Increase all loan qualifications.
Do NOT regulate shit for the sake of regulation or just to create publicity.
Instead of just blaming the private section, question some of the public policies/organizations.
Fannie & Freddie had it's share of issues imo.
Community Reinvestment Act actively encouraged Sub Prime lending.
About McCain, no doubt he would have been better than Bush.
Not too sure about Gore, but I would have been optimistic about Kerry.
Things could always be worse.
Consider Nancy Pelosi, Willie Brown, Glenn Beck, Sarah Palin, or even someone from Zilvia.net as president.

Ron Paul would have been an excellent president.
He wants to get rid of the FED. The FED is not a government agency. It's a private company started from Jp Morgan, Rockefeller, and etc.
The money that is loaned to the government...meaning the money printed is not free. There's an interest to be paid. Who pays that? We do with our income tax.
There was no federal Income Tax before 1913, when the Fed was created.
That's another story in itself.
Obama... this dumb ass keeps bailing companies out. WHY?
These poorly managed companies, profit chasing no long-term goal idiots deserve to crash and burn.
So the government wants to help them out? With who's money? OURS?
I did not purchase Ford, GM, Chrysler for a reason, because they suck, but they still get my money?
Now Obama is messing with subprime.
He's doing loan mods, loan this or that, and now he's trying to prevent evictions.
Most people who are losing their home got greedy by assuming that the home value would rise, and they could cash out. That's their fault, not the government. Majority of home owners could not afford to purchase a home, but yet requirement for loan approval was so pathetic because of Clinton.
(Read about the Community Reinvestment Act...as someone stated above)
The inevitable will happen... people will lose their homes. The longer people try to fight losing their homes, the longer it will take to flip those homes.
I understand Obama is trying to help the economy, but he should stop. It's only f*cking things up more. The longer we try to "stop" this recession the longer we will be in it.
Obama's a lawyer, not a business major/businessman.
Lastly, we're going to be in this recession for awhile. Why?
Unemployment stats... 15 million are unemployed.
Before Dec 2007, it was 7.6 million which was apprx. 5% unemployment rate.
So in order for us to get back to 5% (7.6 million unemployment), there has to be 145,000 jobs PER month for FOUR years.

Ok, I'll chime in for real this time. Im by no means a social conservative, but I am a fiscal conservative. Im all for small government, less taxes, blah blah. Im also a very
"cynical" person, and I think you should work to thrive, i.e. go to college and get a good job to pay for stuff like healthcare, insurance, et cetera.
Barack Obama, and more importantly the liberal majority, is Fucking up beyond all repair the shitty but workable system we had before. You can't possibly be naive enough to believe that ol G.W. is the cause of all our problems. It was the dems that started it, dating back to Carter. They have always wanted everyone to get into a home and be equal. Good idea, but Communism and the Rotary engine were good ideas too, and not everyone is equal. There are people who deserve to be removed from the gene pool, and people who deserve more because they try harder and do more. The dem's basically said to the banks, "if you don't loan to poor people for houses, then we'll fine the fuck out of you, and make it to where you will be able to loan to no one, capice?" Enter adjustable rate mortgages. People making 30 grand a year buying 200 grand houses because the interest rate at first was 3%. Add to that people's natural desire to be the best, living outside of their means, buying $40,000 vehicles, racking up their debt to LOOK successful, then suddenly stuff gets more expensive like gas, people start ignoring bills, they start to loose their homes and vehicles, the bank needs to find the money somewhere, interest rates go up, more people stop paying, banks start to loose money... You can see where I'm going.
We, as a nation, got complacent. We did this to ourselves. We need to get back on the road to fiscal responsability and accountability, and if we need to completely crash to rebuild, so be it. Its everyone's fault. Finding 1 person as a scapegoat, like the Liberals want to to with Bush, is idiotic. Same thing with the conservatives, blaming Obama (even though he isn't helping one little bit). Look in the mirror, and at your neighbor working at mcdonalds driving the Cadillac.
And the system is fucked. There isnt much to say about the system besides that. Welfare, medicare, et cetera... All inherently socialist programs. Socialism and consumeristic democracy don't work together.

This post has much truth in it. So many peolple bash the president even though he has only been in office 8 months. It is to be expected though. Our culture centers around the here and now(there is proof of this) while quite a few of his polices are for much later. Due to the way we as Americans are this is obviously conflicting with what a lot of people.
I won't say he is perfect because he has and will make mistakes, however I do say that he just like any American is doing the best to fix the country the way he sees fit.
My problem with politics is not Barack, my problem is the whole Red VS Blue. By its nature having two opposing sides trying to run things is not going to work. Since they disagree with one another inevitably they will hinder each other from accomplish things, either purposefully, or accidentally.
We learn in business all the time, you can't make everyone happy, there has to be some losers. A lot of Republicans are agasint abortion, a lot of Democrats are pro choice, and so on and on. The way to make that work is to come together and figure out how to best benefit the majority. Red and Blue reminds me of a bitter married couple that has to deal with each other all the time but cant stand to be around another.
Lastly, IMO the whole conservative/liberal thing should be done away with as well. I think that should not matter and should have as little influence on politics as possible. Especially when you start breaking it down into the subcategories, liberal conservative, etc.
In the end you can complain about the President all you want, but there are two truths that all must realize are true. One, no matter how much you don't like what he is doing, you do not know the backbstory behind it nor do you know the outcome of it in the future. Two, no matter how much you don't like what he is doing, we are stuck with him for another 3.2 years.

Obama Wins Nobel Peace Prize in Surprise Pick - WSJ.com (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB125507885722575625.html?mod=igoogle_wsj_gadgv1&)
Obama Wins Nobel Peace Prize in Surprise Pick
By PAUL SONNE
President Barack Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday, in a surprise pick from the Norwegian Nobel Committee that cited the president's creation of a "new climate in international politics."
The decision makes President Obama, son of an American woman and Kenyan father, the youngest U.S. president to win the prize and the third, after Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson, to do so while in office. Mr. Obama's win comes 45 years after the prize was awarded to Martin Luther King Jr., the last African American to win the Nobel Peace Prize.
this contemporizing of the prize (ha that rhymes) needs to stop. al gore bc he made a movie? obama less than a quarter way through his term?
the olympics should follow this new Nobel model and award golds to the favorites before an event.
if obamas going to get it, it should have been given years after his term was up, when people appreciate all the residual effect of his work. all this does is make the Nobel prize appear less substaintial. sure he's said very elequently (spelling fail) what he wants to do, but he hasnt done it yet.
nobel prize is the latest thing to fail due to the obama hype parade

I hope your kidding.
I don't like the way Obama is running things with his (almost) puppet congress. Im sure as a person he's decent, maybe even a nice guy. Seems like a good father and all. It has nothing to do with the fact he's African American. Hell, if we are thinking like that, I wouldn't be accepted 100 years ago, or today if thats how you think, because my great grandmother was from Ethiopia, my grandmother was from Cypris, my mother is from Ireland, and I'm a Catholic. White power folk don't like any of those. I'm "impure". so fuck white supremacists.
But you can't rush health care reform. Thats what he's doing. Of course, this is America. If he didn't rush it, he'd be accused of stalling and not living up to his word. He is rushing it, and now he's being accused of just that lol. All politicians should stop being concerned about how they look, and more concerned about improving the country.

Obama Wins Nobel Peace Prize in Surprise Pick - WSJ.com (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB125507885722575625.html?mod=igoogle_wsj_gadgv1&)
this contemporizing of the prize (ha that rhymes) needs to stop. al gore bc he made a movie? obama less than a quarter way through his term?
the olympics should follow this new Nobel model and award golds to the favorites before an event.
if obamas going to get it, it should have been given years after his term was up, when people appreciate all the residual effect of his work. all this does is make the Nobel prize appear less substaintial. sure he's said very elequently (spelling fail) what he wants to do, but he hasnt done it yet.
nobel prize is the latest thing to fail due to the obama hype parade
The Nobel Peace prize was always somewhat questionable imo.
The categorizations were always so broad & vague.
But yeah, I think the Al Gore thing pretty much was already the low point of Nobel.
They might as well nominate Dr. Phill, and it wouldn't be any surprise.

My ideas of improving the country are probably a little different than others.
Think that's just the nature of being voted into 4 yr terms.
You have to provide results fast, OR doing nothing at all at (to play things safe).
I do think there are serious concerns in our Health care system that need to be addressed.
Change has to start somewhere, & it isn't going to be cheap.
I admire Obama's intentions and what he wants to achieve.
I just think that more planning has to go into it.
Health Care insurance, although integral, isn't the only problem.
There are also things that can be done that don't necessarily cost too much $$$.
I.E. implement laws that regulate questionable health care coverage practices.
Set caps on how much health care companies can charge, etc.
Sooner or later, Health Care has to be addressed.
It really isn't working out the way it is.
I agree with Obama when he says 'ppl should have to go broke when they get sick', or something like that.

But you can't rush health care reform
amen to that. pretty scary that the legislators haven't actually READ what's trying to be passed. hell just to upload it for public viewing takes like...what 2 weeks from what i heard? i forgot who said it but one of the senators/congressman said the bill was too complicated to read. and it's like a thousand pages...holy hell and they want to push this crap through?
oh so i was wondering...at this point in time, there are about 40 million ppl without insurance correct? so if this reform happens where are we gonna get the extra manpower to care for 40 million new patients? as it is i can't see my doctor without making an appointment 2 weeks in advance.
sounds like a mickey mouse half-ass boondoggle waiting to happen-and i'll be damned if i risk going to jail should i decide NOT to have insurance-what a load of shit.

After reading the thread I have to say Sexpanda defianately said it best. How we got here is America's (all inclusive (sp?) fault.... white, black, indian, jamaican, legal, illegal, fat, skinny, whatever..
Read any history book about previous civilizations, read the bible (ooh gosh sorry for cursing in a political forum), every civilization has gone through the same steps.... poor humble hard working people...rich and prosperous... wars and turmoil (everyone pointing fingers at why it failed)
If you want to make a difference look at how you as a person can make a change in your local surroundings, it's the only thing that will TRUELY make a difference. Believe it or not we all have brains, and we are free to use them

Is all about affirmative action at it's best
For those who stupidly think that some of us are racist for questioning this years election....just go get lost.* Nobody questioned Martin Luther King, Desmond Tutu or Nelson Mandela when they received their prize.* Look at what they did....Mandela was imprisoned for nearly 30 years for standing up for his beliefs.* Look at what they did and continue to do...and look at what Obama has done.* If you still don't get it, then you just don't get it.* I am just upset that there are so many nameless people doing great things that went unrecognized because of Osambo hype.*

I too would like to know what Obama has done to deserve a NOBEL FUCKING PEACE PRIZE too. Hes said he's going to do alot, but has yet to fully deliver.
You know who has done alot? Bono. I mean, yeah alot of people don't like him because he seems like a pretentious prick, but seriously; He has used his influence and wealth to improve the lives of countless people across the world. He hasn't gotten a Nobel Peace Prize. Why not? If anyone these days deserves one, he does.

Obama has turned the U.S. into a gimme society. People now think it completely fine to stretch out a hand to the government for a bailout or stimulus. It makes me sick. I have to agree with SexPanda, success takes work, a whole lot of it. I can't believe people really thought Obama to be some kind of messiah, believing he would be able to do everything that came out of his mouth. Idiots. I personally was wanting Romney but w/e.
He has made America into an gimme society. I was waiting for my "Obama Bucks" in the mail after my tax rebate. Sadly it never came, I was quite discouraged, I wanted him to "gimme" my damn "Obama bucks" already.

i agree......I am not mister liberal hippie handout, but Bono ACTUALLY DOES shit.....he actually gets out there and helps people who CAN'T help themselves.
See, that's the difference. There are tons of poor people in other countries who CANNOT do anything to get out of their situation.
We have SOME of those in the US, but there are far too many able-bodied people that just suck or are very irresponsible that put a burden on everyone else

blahblahblah...Nobel Prize...blahlbahlbah
People are all up in arms about Obama winning the prize.
Who gives a shit?
The Norwegian Nobel Committee is a panel of 5 individuals appointed by the Norwegian government for the purpose of awarding the Nobel Peace Prize to whomever they elect. They could award the Peace Prize to Mickey Mouse if they wanted to.
So basically, the NNC is 5 people who vote on who they think is "the coolest" person of the year!
Whoop-dee-fuckin-doooooooo!
What makes their opinion worth more than mine or yours?
Point is, why are people getting mad at the President? Get mad at the Norwegians, if anything.
Or at least accept the Nobel Peace Prize is just some international, douche, elitist popularity contest that has no bearing on your life whatsoever.
It's like when Shakespeare in Love won best Picture at the Academy Awards even though everyone knows that Saving Private Ryan should have got it.
...LACK OF CHANGE...
I think a lot of people don't understand how the government works. I think people imagine that our elected Representatives and Senators sit in this great big building that is the Capitol and every day, for 8 hours, one after another gets up and addresses the rest of Congress. You know, like in all those Gladiator or Spartan Movies.
Yeah...that doesn't happen.
Here's how Congress works.
The United States of America is ruled by a three-branch federal government.
The three branches of government are as follows:
-The Judicial Branch
-The Executive Branch
-The Legislative Branch
the Legislative Branch (aka Congress) is responsible for enacting laws (aka legislating!).
A congress (yes, lower case c) in the United States Congress is a 2 year term that is usually subdivided into two separate sessions (each session usually runs from JAN until NOV/DEC).
Only they don't actually legislate that whole time.
IsWlkcsI5Ko
(That's all true, by the way.)
But it's also a little misleading.
You know how people say the office of President is greater than any one man?
Well the same is true of the members of Congress. Laws are very complex things, after all.
Besides the constant input from outside analysts and experts (aka lobbyists) legislation is actually written and reviewed by dozens if hundreds, or even thousands of lawyers.
Bills and laws aren't 1,000+ pages long because someone enjoys writing and reading legal minutiae. No, it's because they have to be that long.
When you enact or change a law you have to back-check which, if any, sections of the United States Code have been affected by the new or proposed law. That's literally tens of thousands of pages (and that's doesn't include reading case studies and or court cases dealing with these topics; add on another few thousand pages for those).
Legislation usually takes several years to put together and pass. The only exceptions are formal, reoccurring legislation like the Federal Budget (although that usually isn't passed on time either) and legislation dealing with emergency situations like the USA PATRIOT Act of 2001 or the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 (both of which were passed within a matter of weeks).
Yeah, so, basically it's gonna be a while before Congress will be able to submit a bill that meets the President's expectations.
Survival of the fittest... I am a firm believer in this. If you're stupid enough to drop out of highschool, have 6 kids, wait for the man to give you money "because you're entitled to it", and you get sick and die, hey... 1 less undesirable in the gene pool.

What happens to the six kids?
Also, what happens to those who get laid off?
What happens to those who can't afford to pay their bills not due to them having lived beyond their means, but because factors outside their control disrupt their lives?
Also, how many high school drop out with 6 kids do you know? I'm sure they exist...somewhere...but those are extreme examples.

Survival of the fittest. I've already said I was an asshole, so don't start with your "they're innocent" stuff. No one is innocent.
Also, what happens to those who get laid off?
work hard, get another job, cut costs, work your way back onto your feet like I am. Im a certified automotive technician, yet Im working for minimum wage at a convenience store, because it was available. I didn't hold out for another cake job like I had before. I got a job. Honest work for honest pay.
What happens to those who can't afford to pay their bills not due to them having lived beyond their means, but because factors outside their control disrupt their lives?
There is a difference between living outside your means and being fucked by the system. Sure, sometimes you get fucked by the system. I was laid off, i am behind on too many bills to count, and I don't have health insurance. You'd think I was all for this shit they're trying to pass in congress. Im not.
Also, how many high school drop out with 6 kids do you know? I'm sure they exist...somewhere...but those are extreme examples.
I live in Missouri. I work at a convenience store. Nuff said.
Once again, I know im an asshole. I don't think I'm better that everyone, im not some elitist or anything... Im just an asshole. There's a difference.
