I saw this ad and called the number... Turns out that the owner of the dealership is the owner of one of my companys offices and that the car has a bad head gasket so they're letting it go for $2,000 OBO
How bad is this head gasket problem? I do want to drive the car around until I get the SR20DET....
Should I buy it?
I was also thinking that the AT & Sunroof might be a problem.... How hard is the switch from AT to MT?

I've seen that car in person when I went to check out annother car. It has some door dings and stuff but overall is pretty clean. I asked the guy about it, and he said he thought he could fix it and sell it for $3500, so he wasn't willing to let it go as is for less than $2000.
I think he's a little bit deluded about how much the car is worth. Usually 89-90's go for less. Anyway, I would try and find one cheaper.

I've found it very difficult to find other cars like that one around especially since i want a coupe and nothing but a coupe...
I told him I only wanted to spend $1,500...
Duffman, would you pay $1,500 for it being as how you saw it in person?

Does anyone know how difficult/costly the head gasket problem is?
What about AT to MT conversion? (When swapping to SR)
If anyone can offer some advice to the "n00b" I'd appreciate it... I might go get this car tomorrow morning...

if that car (or any) has a headgasket problem its not worth more then 700...basically same as blown engine almost.
labor? if you dont know what your doing, its a PITA. if you do its easy. :)
auto to manual
see above reply
use search mode for that answer
DONT RUSH INTO BUYING
be sure you have everything planned
ya ya "you are having trouble finding one" that's what everyone says

Why spend $$ to fix a blown HG when you are going to swap to SR? Seems a bit pricey. My sis' working 90 hatch was $1500. I guess it depends on your locale. I say keep looking if you are going to need it to be a driver before any major plans.

I have a guy that can fix the headgasket cheap...
Search isnt working for me right now...
The car is actually nice considering thats what Im looking for... Red/Coupe.
Only real drawback is that its AT... but again, that can be changed.
Also... I would like to fix it because I wont get to put the SR into for another 3 months or so... :)
Think this ride is worth it?

how much $$$ is it costing you?
2000? HAHAHA If that is the price you are a IDIOT for paying that much
a blown headgasket stock 240sx should not be more then $1000 MAX!!
BeatJunky
05-08-2003, 03:59 PM
Head Gasket : $31.99
Bolts : $29.99
----------------------------
Total: :$61.98
20% Discount
----------------------------
Grand Total :$49.98 (?)
In parts... my guy can do the job for like $100
Im not gonna pay $2,000 now that Im thinking about... I told the guy no more than $1,500... I will offer $1,000 take it or leave it I guess...
He hasnt sold it in ages it looks like...:D

Doesnt necesarilly need to be a daily driver... i have an 87 Caddy that is my daily driver...
So it can sit... but I agreee with dousan about $1,000 MAX... I will offer this to him. Plus im not really dying for this one, it has a sunroof...:(

Drive Train FWD
He's wants so much b/c its the only FWD 240sx ever made :D Anyway, I payed $1000 for an 89 with 106k on it and no engine, manual and alloys:rolleyes: . Body and interior (cept the dash) were in great shape!!! But I would have kept looking if I had known how long it had been sitting :(
Anyway, I'd say $1000 give or take a little for it. Do you really think he'll take that offer considering how much he's asking?
According to KBB.com Retail Value $3,590  but that doesn't factor in the head gasket problem
BeatJunky
05-08-2003, 08:47 PM
Depends how desperate he is to get rid of it...
KBB.com Trade-In Value w/Engine Damage gave it $1,500...
Now you know thats the REAL value of this car... $1,000 is pushing it but that's what I will offer... Im sure he's gonna wanna get more so I guess I'll cough up an extra ben or two...

ideally, you have a daily driver already, so find a mint chassis, body, a blown motor is great, yoiu said you wanted to swap anyways. dont waste money for a daily driver if you already have one
BeatJunky
05-08-2003, 11:24 PM
No no... I dont want it as a daily driver...
I wanna be able to drive it around so I can get to taste the KA before I swap to SR...
I really dont care to drive the KA too much... but it would be cool I guess.
IMO... this unit is great! Body isnt in bad shape, interior either, engine isnt too bad if only I can get the head gasket fixed... So if he sells for $1,000 or at best $1,500 then I personally think it's a good deal.
Again... I feel that the AT & Sunroof are a drawback. But lets face it... It probably wont make too much of a big difference to have the sunroof on there since I wont really be "racing" on track or events of any kind. So the extra weight or lesser stiffness probably wont make a big impact for me. And the fact that its AT right now... well like mentioned above, it will all change when I get an SR clip by fall...
I'll go see the guy. Put my offer on the table. If it works out then it works out. If not... oh well! Maybe I guess there is a mint, sunroofless, 5-speed coupe out there waiting for me afterall...:D

Dousan is absolutely right about PATIENCE. I personally have gotten burned more than once by jumping into a car purchase when the car itself wasn't -really- what I was looking for.
Unless you can get an amazing deal on this particular car, I would pass. S13s come up for sale ALL the time. If what I truly wanted was a 5-spd, sunroofless car, than I would save my money and keep my eye on the classifieds until it came along. And it WILL come along. The transmission swap can be done, but why bother? Just hang tight and a manual car will pop up for sale soon enough.

Yeah, waiting sucks, but if you're anything like I am, you'll slowly come to seriously dislike a car that you jumped all over just because you couldn't wait any longer, if the car wasn't really what you wanted. This is something you're going to sink a lot of time and money into, especially if you're planning on doing the Silvia conversion like you say. I personally would wait until I found -exactly- the car I wanted to use as the foundation for a project like that.
You said you don't want a sunroof, and you want a car with a manual tranny. A 240SX isn't a rare exotic, it's not like this one car you found is the only one you'll see in months. These cars are all over the place, especially the S13. A bit of patience now will pay off big in the end.
And sorry, the only car I have sitting on my desk is a beautiful red FD. It's 1/18th scale, though, so I think you'd have a hard time getting into the driver's seat. :)

Found another 1990 Red Coupe... This one however is MINT w/ 5-Speed but Sunroofed... :( They were asking $3,000+ as well.
Gonna go see both of them today... I'll be back with results.

Well they are rare, so I could see paying $1000 for the car if you were having trouble finding one, but I would wait.

thats crazy! after searching for maybe 5 minutes me and my friend found a 92 SE 5-speed coupe with 80k miles for $2,500. i don't get why its so hard for everyone else to find a nice one. :p
BTW my friend is already planning on picking this car up as a daily driver so sorry if anyones interested

People are paying way too much for S13's now for some reason. I will be selling a 5 speed 92 with a 97 KA that has under 50K on it for $4000 later this month. Car has suspension, STB's, aftermarket rim, new aftermarket clutch, new master and slave clutch cylinders, aftermarket plug wires, intake, no rust, clean body, etc! Its not for sale yet and this isnt a post to whore it out so no offers please!!!! :D Just wanted to give an idea on what $4000 can buy. That car is way overpriced! I am not sure I would buy it for $1000.

Im back from viewing the cars... Needless to say. Pure waste of Time!
The first one (Blown HG Unit)... Rusty by sideskirt area, pieces literally fell off to touch, interior was very decent but the car was definitely not driveable. Im guessing it was leaking internally as white smoke blew thru exhaust and the car was super struggling to to stay on at idle. Once you pop that AT tranny into drive the thing shuts off... So I tell the guy he's got no engine, barely a decent chasis and an average interior. I offered $700 and at bestt $1,000 if they really wanted to sell it. He declined & I walked.
Went to see one at the other dealers showroom. I was told by phone it was a 5-speed but I get there and its another AT. I find out that the mileage was 143k & the price was $4,000. Paint was harsh, interior was missing pieces yadda yadda yadda... I told him I'd give no more than $1,500 as this one was at the least driveable... again this idiot thinks he can $4,000... let him live his dream.
I did however, come across a very very mint 1993 Integra 86k miles 5-Speed for $3k...
Well... off to the search!:)

Doesn't your sig say Silvia or BUST? You're going to have a pretty hard time doing a Silvia conversion if you buy a Teg. ;)
Patience, youung Jedi. Give yourself at least a month to find the right car. It's out there somewhere.

That's simple, man. All he has to do is swap in an SR20DET (Bluebird, but who's counting) and do the madd JdM TyTe SYLVIA ICHIGO STRAWBERRY FACE and slap some GT-R badges on that beeeyotch!!
(note: please don't do this) :D

:) Im not considering buying it... I have a personal grudge against Honda/Acura and how they seem to swarm the streets in higher numbers than roaches do in the kitchen of a $300 dollar a month, government funded, ghetto apartment in the south side.
:D:D
But it was kinda cool to see a car such as that in such great condition. The car is totally flawless to the eye. Clean Clean Clean!;)

you should just keep waiting and you will find a nice shell for the swap for less than 1k easily.
another thing you could consider is buying a 240 with the swap already done.
