Ok, let me nerd out on some plane stuff.
Who belongs to/enjoys/partakes in different Squadrons. Navy, Marines, Air Force.
Let me see what you belong to and what you work on.
Post pictures of your crew and equipment.
I'd like to see!
To start off, this is for Barry

i live by teh base i dont think there was a show this week?
I have worked on the Avionics of all the aircraft in the Marine Corps except the V-22.
And the last day for the Miramar airshow is today, it's worth checking out plus the weather is good right now.

Cool.
Miramar. Was just there yesterday. They seem to mostly run Hornets as opposed to Super Hornets. Why is that?
VMFAT-101 SHARPSHOOTERS. sick name. love it.
The Navy brought the Super Hornet the Corps will move straight into the JSF. Well thats the plan.

Pretty sure the JSF is a planned replacement for the Hornet and the Harrier.
Oh I see. When is the JSF supposed to replace the Hornets?
I don't know the official date for the full replacement but I'm sure I'll be in the 1st Civ Div by that time. But the first squadron to upgrade is with the next 5 years though. I've been out of the Fixed wing side for almost 5 yrs now. But I was talking to a guy who was working on the bugs for the programs 2 weeks ago about this.
BTW Did you get any pics of the Blue Angels?
Brian

I took a couple of the Blue Angels, but they aren't neat really at all.
All I have is a camera phone that isn't the best to shoot with.
Let me upload them

Haha, one of my old co-workers was the M.D for the Blue Angels. He brought in the flight leader about 2 years ago and he explained the dialogue they use while in flight to coordinate their performances. It's really quite interesting!

I was an AB (Aircraft Boatswain's Mate) first, launching planes off the roof, then an AT (Aircraft Electronics Tech) on the Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71)... worked in AIR/V2 then in AIMD/IM3 from 2003 to 2005.
Launching planes off the deck was cool, kinda. Scary. F14's were BEAST when they lit the burners, you feel your whole guts vibrating... we all missed them when they decom'd them.
Hornets and Superhornets both have their place, and they're very small (more planes per carrier) and much cheaper to repair/maintain (that's the real reason they replaced the F14's and A5's).
My job on the carrier was to maintain ELINT and Offensive Electronics Warfare equipment for the F-14, F-18 and the EA-6B (Prowler)... pretty cool job as far as they go, it's really strange being in the Gulf though when it's 120* outside, and inside your shop it's 60* (they have to keep it cool for the R/F equipment) - you walk around the ship in cold-weather gear and people look at you like you're nuts.
I was around jets so much that I'd be totally fine never having to listen to that noise again in my life.

About 15 years ago when I lived in Reno, we had a squadron of F-4 Phantom II's called the high rollers. When the Phantom was decommissioned, we got a squad of shitty C-130 Hercules transport ships.
When the air over Reno was filled with the sound of wussy turbo probs instead of the panty dropping, ear drum rupturing sound of General Electric J79-GE-17A axial compressor turbojets, I died alittle inside.

After seeing the gun on this damn thing in action, nothing can ever replace it. Imagine it diving down on a steep angle dive, fires its gattling gun...thing almost looks like it stops, all you hear is "Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrp"
As far as the F-22, we've had them deployed out here the last 6 months. Basically testing to see how theyll work out away from their home station in Langley. Been playing war games with our on station F-15s and they are utterly destroying our F-15s. 2nd deployment out here and they're getting better. They started off with a 4:1 kill ratio, when they left they were at 20:1. F-15s are still one of the best air superiority fighter in the world and it got dusted badly.

LOL you got pics of the cruise patch?!? That was actually a pretty big deal... the whole "last F14 squadron to deploy" shit. Cool.
As far as the EW equipment I worked on, the most common stuff was chaff dispensers lol, but my 'main job' was to repair all offensive/defensive ECM for the Tomcat and Hornet/Superhornet. The F14s had so much gear that broke though... and everything that came in had to be checked out on this 'test bench' which was literally the oldest piece of equipment on the ship I think. The computer that ran the bench had a 386 chip @ 33MHz running it. OLD.
Anyway, every day you do tests on your test bench, then gear gets given to the ships maintenance department from the squadron... if it has to do with ECM or EA-6B offensive shit they call someone from my shop down to pick it up. We sign for it, inspect it, then run it through a series of tests ~ some of these take like 10 mins, some take hours and hours (to run through the entire signal spectrum of a EA-6B ALQ-99 pod). Super sweet part was once you started the test, you weren't expected to do anything besides watch the test bench (in case the test fails), so you kick back and fall asleep.
Once the box fails a test, you drag out the schematics and try and visually see what's wrong - sometimes you can actually see a burnt out chip or solder trace, which makes deciding what to replace very easy. Most of the time you can't, and you use your best judgement on which component to order - then you wait a couple days for it to get flown out to the ship, replace it, and test it again.
The coolest part for me now is all the work I did on the harnesses between the components (the wires and connectors were the only thing were were qualified to actually work on) gave me a lot of experience that has helped me launch a legit wiring operation with cars. So in that sense, Go Navy.

Tell me more about the Electronic weapons.
What is there?
Jammers?
EMP weapons?

:)
Electronic warfare is split up into a bunch of sub-categories, from Electronic Intelligence (with it's own subsets) to EM jamming. Basic radio wave science tells ya that there's two types of interference, constructive and destructive, which have to do with matching frequency and/or phase of a transmission, and applying enough power to 'do work', whether you're trying to kill the signal or amplify it.
When it comes to defensive electronic countermeasures (D-ECM), you have passive stuff like flares and chaff, which are designed to fool infrared- and radar-seeking weapons, respectively. They don't work very well, for a bunch of reasons, but mostly because even shoulder-mounted anti-air missiles are advanced enough to see what target is still moving quickly, and what targets are falling/slowing, and choose the right one. Air-to-air fired stuff is even more advanced, and whereas shooting a coffee can of tin foil out the side (chaff) used to be a decent defense in the 60's and 70's, modern weaponry sees right through that shit. Plus, when you run out of chaff or flares, you're boned.
... so that's where active electronic countermeasures become more important, and more versatile. You can analyze the signal coming out of a missile, guess on what it expects to receive, and then send back an even more powerful signal that tells it to go kick rocks a couple miles to the left for instance.
Then there's offensive electronic warfare, where you 'sense' for radar signatures as you're flying into an area, jam them with a more powerful destructive signal (so they're now blind to the sky), and then if you're feelin frisky send a HARM missile right to where they were (radar-seeking air-to-ground missile). Or, you can just fly over an area and effectively jam the entire electromagnetic spectrum, so say bye-bye to cell phones, radio, TV, internet, etc - anything passed over the air or through an unshielded wire gets scrambled. To give you an idea of scale, 3 EA-6B's with the AN/ALQ-99 package that I worked on could cut off all communication in the entire city of New York! Pretty powerful shit.
So yeah, there's a lot of tech that goes into high-power emitters that are also small in size/weight/radar signature, electronically beam-steering antennas, etc. It used to be all about who has the more powerful radar (to 'see the farthest'), but now it's all about who can see without being seen - stealth and deny-ability are king.

So cool, man.
Love the sound of the AN/ALQ-99. Is there a newer version now?
More powerful or something?
In other news, I can't believe the F-117s are now retired. I remember going to an airshow when I was younger and it was the first time I ever saw the plane in real life. I remember it was surrounded by soldiers with rifles ready to take care of business if needed. Now, that this is a relic it seems. I guess it first flew back in 1983 or something. AMAZING. That's older than me, yet the thing still looks futuristic.
This makes me wonder what new stuff they have going on. Skunk Works and whatnot.

not too sure on the exact reason, but i believe it may be due to it being a training squadron and being that the super hornets are a bit newer and they have plenty of regular hornets but then again i'm not familiar with the platform yet so thats just speculation

Reason the F-117 was retired was basically for the same reason the F-14 got retired...cost too much for upkeep. From what a buddy of mine told me, for every 1 hour it flew, they had to put in 3 hrs of maintenance. Most of the problem came from the paint and avionics. Also, AF wanted to shift the money from these into the JSF and F-22 program.

I've ridden in an Army Chinook in Balad...that shit was not fucking fun for one reason...that shit was leaking hydraulic fluid all over the place. You kinda get worried when the load master for the helicopter tells you that's normal.

Depends what branch. The Army will let you fly as a Warrant Officer (no degree) via their "high school to flight school" program. Mostly used for rotary-wing pilots, but there are some fixed-wing that get through. You need high ASVAB scores as well as excellent AFAST scores (I think that's the acronym for it, it's the Army Flight Aptitude test, it's tough because it's cryptic, not because the material's difficult).
Marine Corps/Navy/Air Force all require a college degree, as well as you having to be a goody-two-shoes badass. Only the cream of the crop get to be pilots.
Oh, and naturally perfect vision (or corrected via PRK, which is a much more painful version of Lasik).
And you have to be under a certain height (6'3" or so for helos, 6' for most fixed-wing), be in fantastic shape, etc.

Marine Corps does not use the CH-47 Chinook, only the CH-46 Sea Knight, which is a MEDIUM lift platform.
http://www.foxco-2ndbn-9thmarines.com/CH-46_1seaknight.jpg
Our HEAVY lift platform is the CH-53 Super Stallion. They are currently developing it's newest incarnation which is looking very impressive thus far.

I thought the Chinook was just the Army variant of the Sea Knight. They look identical to me. Also, I thought the Sea Knight was the heavy lifter, while the Super Stallion was the medium lift. Lastly, I just learned something new...didnt think that the Osprey was capable of lifting anything other than being a people mover.
ThatGuy
10-09-2009, 07:32 AM
CH-47 Chinook can handle roughly TWICE the weight of the CH-46 Sea Knight. There is a bit of a size difference between them, and numerous design differences.

BRIAN: i'm not sure if he still posts on here but "Eugene" (name on here) if i recall correctly was at one time part of the fighting 31. i know for a fact he working on the navy flight side at one point.
and as far as favorite squadron...HANDS DOWN the 1st avg during wwII aka "THE FLYING TIGERS" they were basically volunteers (arguably mercenaries) that came from US NAVY,AIR FORCE,MARINES...they flew the reknown p40's with their trademark tiger teeth. they flew for china but repped the US lol and were eventually absored and changed into a couple US units. and i think its the 23rd fighter group are the direct descendants and the ONLY unit authorized to sport nose art/ESPECIALLY the flying tiger tiger teeth art. and the rad part is like 80% of them were all ace pilots...not too mention they had one of the raddest pilots ever...double ace david "tex" hill...look them up and their history if your a squadron buff brian, you will def be impressed.

i've never flown on an osprey...i do know it was a running joke in the infantry community about the reliability of them, but i'm pretty sure they got all the bugs worked out by now
Fewer crashes than anything else you've ever flown on.

Fewer crashes than anything else you've ever flown on.
yeah but is that comparing a 30-40 year run of 46's/53'3 to a 5 year run of the 22's  either way i'll take your word !!!!

Try over 20 for the Osprey, and you really don't want to compare the 46's crash record.

no shit didnt know they were around that long and didnt know the 46's were worse as far as crashes

Incorrect, you need an Associates degree to be a Warrant Officer in the Army.
Interesting! In 2005, when I was contemplating "blue to green" to go fly in the Army, I did not have an Associates degree and was still eligible.
Shit if I'd have done that, I'd still be in... lol.

GOOD post. I enjoyed this.
I think EUGENE should come in here and hang out for a while.
Also, went to Edwards AFB show last weekend.
So good.
Nellis is coming up next month. Might make the trip out there....

Oh it has and will happen. We had one of our jets go over the front of the USS KittyHawk in Japan during FCLP's. The moron in the wire room set it for the wrong hornet (legacy instead of super) and caused the wire to snap when the hook caught. Both our Pilot and WSO punched out last minute no way to power up and take off again and no way to stop. The pilot's Koch fitting on his chute, the seawars didn't fire on one side and he was drug under the hull of the boat. Needless to say his emergency oxygen from the seatpan and him having his mask on like he was supposed to, saved his life.
He said it was funny as hell when he surfaced, the SAR swimmer was textbook word for word with what he said when he swam up to him...in an extremely high pitched voice.
I decided recently that Figting 31 is my favorite squadron.
I love all the art. I think I'm going to colect some of the patches and whatnot once I get a job again.

FWIW and I do not know if you think it counts, but my fathers chip runs many of the planes in our Arsena including F16's and B2' Stealthsl and runs the cruise and smart missiles. Performance Semiconductor. PR4000.
Other than that seen the Blue Angels many times in the bay area, when I lived in San Francisco they would do their turn around right over the roof of my house in Bernal heights. It was some pretty low altitude shit. Fleet week and all that.
I have been on the Enterprise at Sea pretty fucking dope shit. GXSRjordan pretty much summed up what it was like. F14's on take off holy shit. Also used to live in Palo Alto by Moffett saw quite a few VTOL planes.

JSF is gonna replace the F-16 and A-10s on the AF side...but seriously, nothing can ever replace this SOB...
Nothing like going to rifle qual at Ft. Indiantown Gap (PA) and having the A10's from the Air Gaurd flying overhead, and doing live fire the next mount range over. They usually hault qual when they do as the 'brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrp' just disrupts everyones train of though haha. Bad ass sound, even sicker when you can feel it rumble the ground.
I'm an Army guy, but in OIF 3 we took over an old MiG bunker at the end of the runway in Kirkuk. It sure seemed a great idea (comapred to the CHU's) until about 2 months in when this F16 group started using it as a refuel and repair post. Never really got a chance to ask to many questions, but was wondering if any of you Air Force guys knew more of the unit?

AV is Aviano Air Base, Italy...home of the 31st FW with 2 fighter SQ under it, 555 FS and the 510 FS. Both flying F16s. You should know about the 555 FS, Capt Scott O'Grady was from that unit...guy who got shot down in Yugoslavia back in 04.
Anyways, Brian, see if somebody can get you into Edwards AFB. If you like the planes that are at Plant 42, the shit you will see in Edwards will blow you away. SR71s, to the original lifting body prototypes (where they got the idea for the space shuttle) and one of the 2 YF-23 "Black Widow" should be there. I still think the YF-23 should have won over the F-22 to this very day. Faster, more maneuverable aircraft.
http://www.kaliteliresimler.com/data/media/791/YF-23_Black_Widow_II_3.jpg
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/af/YF-23_left_view.jpg
* Stealth - The YF-23 had better all aspect stealth qualities which makes it More survivable!
* Speed- The YF-23 could attack the enemy faster
* Computer Technology- The Air Force stated that the F-22 had more throughly tested computer technology, which suggest the F-22's computers may be based on older technology (Using older, but more proven technology is a trademark of the Skunk Works)
Now look at this clam:
Once again the USAF released a design requirement for the Advanced Technology Fighter (ATF) program. Competing bids by Lockheed/Boeing/General Dynamics and Northrop/McDonnell-Douglas were awarded and a fly-off would determine the winner. Once again Lockheed came out on top and was awarded the ATF contract for the F-22 Raptor. Sources state that Northrop’s entry, the YF-23, was clearly a superior aircraft and the reason it as not awarded to them was that Northrop held the B-2 bomber contract.
Brian
02-25-2010, 09:09 AM
I would love to go to Edwards and check out the things there.
At the Northrop plant in El Segundo, they have one of the YF-23s in between the buildings. You can BARELY see it if you drive by.
I guess for now, I'll just hope that Edwards will have an air show again this year. If not, I'll make the trek to Nellis.

That would be my fathers chips. He was set to retire and sell the company in 2001 when 9/11 happened. The Government came to him and asked for him to produce 10 years worth of supply in 1.5 years. He had to run the company round the clock.
Oh and yes it is a single ended RISC processor and no by today current standards? Its no longer the fastest though when he designed it, it was the fastest processor in Silicon Valley. It does its job very well and is quite reliable.

A World War II-era Flying Fortress, one of only eight B-17s from the period still able to fly, will be on display at Signature Aviation at Long Beach Airport Saturday and Sunday. ... Boeing produced more than 12,732 B-17s between 1935 and 1945, with 4,735 lost in combat. For tickets to fly in the plane call (918)-340-0243.

A10s are great for the simple fact that the USAF said "here's a Vulcan Gattling Gun, build a plane around it".

This thread pwns so hard, holy shit. Like some of the other guys, I'm not in the military or a pilot but aviation is just SO damn infatuating, one of the few things I'd truly love to work with someday. WWII-era aircraft especially, which surprisingly no one posted any pics of these:

I think the one before the Phantoms is a P-80 Shooting Star.
ThatGuy
08-26-2010, 01:26 PM
Thanks Brian. with some more research, you're right about the Shooting Star. Thanks!!
As far the Prop plane goes though, I'm thinking it's a T-34 Mentor.
I was originally looking at the "Turbo" Mentor which was stumping me because they have side pipe exhausts coming out of the nose.
The "standard" Mentor doesn't have them though.
Woo-hoo, mystery solved!

I was hoping someone was going to bring that up! I always had a small fetish for Sukhoi's multirole aircraft development during the cold war. The thrust vectoring on the SU-27, 33 and 37 is just incredible, not too mention the jaw dropping Pugachevs Cobra maneuver. Apologies to the op for going a little off topic, I could not resist.

I've heard this before, supposedly the F35 is to replace it, but I really don't see this happening. Speed isn't the purpose of the A-10, its close air support, and very few aircraft still do it with the effectiveness, range and duration that an A-10 can do it and in many different variations. I really don't see them being retired especially since the AF has spent so much getting all the operational A-10's converted to C-Models. I can guarantee you the big A-10 bases are not showing any signs of slowing down, I think I remember hearing some ridiculous that A-10's will still be in the fight until 2030-2040.

Army has already said if the AF drops the A10, the Army is going to pick it up....Since the AF doesn't want to lose manning......You see where this is going!

I didn't even look at the tail, geez. If it's a EA-6B then it's most likely ALQ-92 offensive EW. Primary fuel pods are inboard of the ECM pylons, but I don't know if they're secondaries or what.
The squadron dudes always talked about how three Prowlers with full EW gear could wipe out all communication in New York City. Extremely powerful disruptive radio jamming. And we tested those radios inside a steel room with this little water tank that was supposed to absorb all the radiation... needless to say, if you didn't have to be in there, you'd find somewhere else to be during testing lol.
Brian
05-27-2011, 09:14 AM
I thought it was an ALQ-99. That's what I googled anyways. lol (it is 100% not a fuel pod) The Prowlers and Growlers seem to usually carry 3 each.

Fuel pods are round, EW pods have square sides.
Both the pics you put up were refueling pods, which is another thought, since on carriers you can't have traditional refuelling birds.
Brian
05-27-2011, 02:33 PM
Super Hornets carry that refueling pod on their centerline position when they are in the "gas truck" configuration. Then, they carry 4 standard fuel tanks under the wings.

movie looks good. lucasfilms doesn't mess up imo. I dont know much of the history of the tuskegee airmen, but from the movie trailers, they start out with hand down p40s as an experimental group, and than demand new planes hence getting the p51s

mechanic for either special vehicles, or just general vehicles...POSSIBLY jet engines...my buddy works on C-5 engines and switching to C17 and he loves it...so idk yet...all I know is I'm excited!!! My gf's grandfather was in it for 25 years...a recruiter for 6 or 8 of those years, talked to him last night and he's gonna do all he can to help me get in...he's a very well known and well respected man in the Air Force even till this day. Idk how high of a ranking he had, but I do know he still knows a lot of guys in there that would do anything for him. So....getting my GED/Diploma, talking to local recruiter, taking the ASVAB, waiting like 6-9 months, and hopefully all goes well :) SUPER STOKED!! Getting to do something with my life!

I know I've got pics of the Nellis F-16 aggressors, but I'll have to dig em up. Anyways, post-AF career led to F-22 production.

I'm not at Lockheed anymore, but there are some interesting leftovers in the woods off the flightline...like the remains of the P-3 that was downed over Hainan back in the early 2000's. Contrary to what pics you may find of it after landing on Hainan, that aircraft was NOT returned to us in one piece. The pieces ended up being delivered back to Dobbins AFB inside a Russian Antonov.

Being that I was final assembly at the time, I had nothing to do with fixing it, as that would've gone to the folks working the mod contracts. I do recall some of what they told us from the crash in Alaska and I believe that it was resolved properly by replacing components.
As for the Chengdu J-20 and Shenyang J-31...no thrust vectoring. They won't be able to out maneuver the Raptor, and having the exhaust sticking so far out of the tail section is going to give off an incredible heat signature compared to the F-22 and F-117.

Wow, never seen this thread.
Nice birds in here though.
If I can find the pics from when I was a little guy Ill post some of my favs.
I'm not in service but most of the males in my family are.
Because of my uncle, when I lived in D.C. I got to board the sr71 and the B2 stealth. That might be my most memorable moment of my life.
Got to ride in a p38 which was awesome as well.
I live in CO now and I get to see jets galore. A few years back there was a flock of B2's passing through. You look up and it was like 6 giant kites speeding by.
When I'm at work in Denver I get to see a bunch of hornets some A-10's and what looks to be f16's chasing each other at random lol. Ill take pics when I get my camera next week.

The Last Zero Fighter
The Last Zero Fighter: Firsthand Accounts from WWII Japanese Naval Pilots: Dan King: 9781468178807: Amazon.com: Books (http://www.amazon.com/The-Last-Zero-Fighter-Firsthand/dp/1468178806)
Fairly new book came out mid 2012. I am currently half way through it. Very good book from the Japanese point of view. American history tends to paint them as savages (as most of America's war opponents). The author went and interviewed a few remaining pilots, and got their stories. about how they all joined the japanese navy, to avoid getting drafted into the japanese army since they feared it would be harder, etc etc. First hand pilot stories from Pearl Harbor etc.
There seem to be a few typos and grammar mistakes in the kindle version though, but doesn't bother me much.

So upon doing some random research on the Tustin airship hangar, I fell upon this project that I'd never heard of. A company called Aeroscraft is in the process of constructing a prototype airship that would revolutionize freight transportation.
The current prototype is at 75 meters in length and is only half the projected size of the full scale production model which can carry an estimated 66 tons of freight and requires no airfield nor ground crews!
I've always been pretty fascinated with airships so to say I'm hopeful and excited to see a production model of this is an understatement!

It would not only be military as they also hope to have commercial buyers.
