View Full Version : How high is your steering wheel????

I have a question regarding steer wheel position/seat position. I've had this question for months, but didn't bother asking cause I thought it was a stupid question. But there are no stupid questions, just stupid people :mephfawk:
I'm not a super tall guy (5'11), and I don't think I have very long legs either. But I find that my knees/thighs brush my steering wheel when clutching, or when I corner hard, my hands will bump my knee/thigh as well. It feels way more comfortable to drive with the steering wheel down low, except while turning. When I put the steering wheel higher (so my legs don't bump it), it feels goofy, but maybe I'm not use to it. I haven't counted the 'clicks' to where it feels comfortable/uncomfortable yet.
I have a R32 GTR seat, and it's as far back as it can go, I think. I attached the seatbelt to the stud sticking out of the transmission tunnel because it sat too high, and now it rubs up against the seat pretty hard, so maybe the seat just stuck. I don't recline the seat too much while driving, because I don't like leaning back while driving.
I think the situation can be solved by getting a smaller diameter steering wheel (~330mm) and getting either a fat hub, or a thin hub with a quick release or tilt hub. This would bring the steering wheel closer to me, and reduce the distance from the lower outside diameter to my leg. Hopefully that would solve my problem.
Some days, I feel like I wasn't built for this car cause I have to keep adjusting the seating position/steering position, lol.

LOL
I realize there is no actual question in my original post.
I was wondering if anyone was familiar with that situation, feedback/advice, etc.

man, this is the original reason i bought my first S14 (ive had 3), i fit well in them. im 6'1" and when i bought my first s14 i was 170lbs, im now 200lbs, but dont have any issues with the steering wheel. i have R33 GTR seats, mine is nearly all the way back. maybe you have thick thighs? lol. i dont have my steering wheel all the way up either. oh, i have an R33 GTR steering wheel too.

I like sitting close to the wheel and having it pretty close to my thighs like 8 inches above them.

same happens to me with my stock steering wheel. i test fitted a hub with a thin qr and a 330mm wheel and i got much more clearance for my thighs.

im 5'9"
for daily i like the seat a bit back and the steering column down.
for drift i put my seat as far forward as comfortably possible, and i raise the steering column so that when i whip the wheel or go to grab it i wont hit my knees.
s13/recaro seat/nardi 330 no short hub no quick release

sitting close to the wheel is comfortable for my arms and back.
But sitting that close, I can't stretch my legs out, so I have to keep my right foot angled up (toes towards shin) the whole time, and that gets hella uncomfortable. I'd rather stretch my legs out. It also hinders my braking, as my foot will sometimes press both brake and gas under hard braking.
get longer arms duhhh
get a small wheel i got a 2inch hub for sale cheap lmk

i'm 5'7 and i used to have my seat reclined back lo'ryder status and my legs were able to stretched enough to push the clutch in. It was cool till i started to feel too comfortable and felt sleepy all the time so now i sit close to the wheel. My steering column is aligned with the top of my dash so pretty low (feels like im driving a gokart) =P. Being a short person i have a lot of leg room

Im not as tall as you (5'8) but I was in the same situation. When I sit too close my knees would hit. And I didnt like having to raise the wheel to high. But liked the wheel to be real close.
So my setup now allows me to have enough bend in my knees, the wheel closer to me and the tilt just 1 or 2 clicks from the lowest.
nismo hub + 10mm spacer + fet q/r + 350(nardi) and 330(hitman) deep corn wheel + bride brix 1.
Im thinking about getting a 20-30mm spacer instead, or just get a works bell q/r since its noticeably thicker than the fet. Just to see how it feels.

i think you should try getting a seat that mounts really low.
you can get seats to mount really fucking low.

Get a deep corn steering wheel where itll be sitting closer to you. Add spacers if its not close to you enough.

I'm 6'4 175 pounds and have no problem with my wheel. My head does brush the top of the car though if my hair is spiked just a little. lol

i'm about 5'11 also and i ride dirty. i have the wheel tilted down far too.
i do have skinny wimp legs though.
Get a seat that mounts really low and a steering wheel spacer.
Then your arms can be in a comfortable position and your legs won't be bunched up.
In my 180 I had a pretty low rail and a bride reclineable. I'm 6'1" and tilt my wheel all the way to the bottom. Felt great. I also had a Nardi deep corn and a pretty thick hub. I would have preferred a hub spacer though for maximum comfort when driving hard.

I am 5'11" and in an S14 with stock seats, I sit so that my back is against the seat, and my foot is FULLY extended to get the clutch pedal to go all the way down (can't stand driving cars where my leg is bent when I press the clutch down).
In that position, I sit with the seat fairly reclined, and find the best steering wheel position to allow my right foot enough movement is with the steering wheel ALL THE WAY UP!

I'm 5'7", my steering wheel is all the way down and I love it, I couldn't ask for a better seating position.
Get lower seat rails, there's another solution.

1) I didn't know you could add a spacer to QR hubs. That's news to me.
2) Lots of people are saying lower rails. I don't want to buy another seat, I love my R32 seat. Unless I can adapt nagisa/buddy club rails to my R32 seat, I wouldn't change it.
3) The quick release I am probably going to get is the NRG 2.5. I don't really care what hub I get, as long as it's fat, cause they are pretty much all the same as far as I can tell. A long time ago, I tried to get dimensions from NRG/Works bell/FET for their quick release dimensions, so I could try to get an idea where the steering wheel would sit, but they wouldn't release that information to me.
4) Ideally, I want a 330mm Nardi deep corn wheel. Not going to happen unless I find one used. 95% sure I am going to buy one of those 330mm dished wheels off pink godzilla or any other vendor flipping them. Quality vs price, I haven't read anything drastic that would steer me away from them.
EDIT: typo

you can just make spacers.
my wheel is all the way up, nrg 2.5 gen. 330 sparco wheel im like 6'1 and it works fine for me and i like to sit close.

your knee's should be slightly bent, along with steering wheel close enough your elbows are slightly bent.
