View Full Version : engine won't rev past 5500 sometimes. I am getting good gas mileage???????????

The last time something like this happened i was getting about 10 miles/gal and black smoke billowed from the exhaust, and it would never let me past 5000 rpm.
Now it is driving fine, but sometimes when i am trying to merge into traffic and running through the gears it will rev great up to 5500 then will sputter and act like the ecu goes into panic mode  When i first noticed it I was in third gear and all the other gears worked like normal. Today it was in first gear when it happened.
Hopefully someone can help me on this, because i am bogled!

What did you fix the last time? Your previous problem sounds like a faulty MAF or MAF wiring.
This sounds like an ignition problem, or possibly something is causing fuel starvation at the top end.
When was the last time you maintained the ignition system? dist. cap, rotor, plugs, wires.
If these are all within spec, check the fuel system. If the fuel filter is old, replace it. If it's been replaced recently, then check the fuel pump to make sure it's fully functional and getting enough power.

Hey, that happens to me sometimes, usually on 2nd and 3rd gear (maybe 4th and 5th as well? never been there though) but never on 1st gear, around 5-6k rpm, it revs up fine until that point, then it kinda sputters or not rev smoothly...
And it only happens when I'm in gear.
And it doesn't do it all the time, sometimes it revs perfectly fine.
I usually don't drive hard so I only experience this on an on-ramp.
And I get roughly 27-30 mpg for the last 7 years or so...
I got no power mods either on my car either except for k&n filter, 300z fuel filter and that's about it...
I'm figuring this got to be some simple problem like a plug/sensor somewhere that needed to be cleaned/replace...

I had to replace the MAF last time. I just changed the plugs/wires about 1k miles ago, and cap/rotor about 4-6K miles ago.
I changed the fuel filter about 10k miles ago and used a 300zx filter.
How would i go about checking the fuel pump? I know it works obviously or else i wouldn't be driving, and i don't have a voltage meter but might be able to use a friends if it is necessary. Please explain further on this subject.
thanks for the comments

the same thing has happened to mine car basically since I bought it a year ago, over that period of time I replaced fuel filter, plug wires, spark plugs, dist. cap, dist rotor, ignition coil, had the injectors cleaned.
I've ordered a 255l fuel pump (walbro) and I don't know if its going to help or not, but I'm swapping soon so I wanted to get the fuel pump out of the way.

no one else has any ideas?

I put my new walbro in today, and I haven't got to drive the car yet (doing some suspension and body work) but just revving it, it still does the same old **** where it doesn't wanna rev if you blip the throttle.
so, that solution is out.
hopefully my engine will be out soon, too.

i have a similiar problem (i know the cause tho). Sometimes on an onramp with me flooring it, my speed limiter kicks in. It only happens from 3rd gear on up, and all i have to do is shift, and it kicks off. only difference is mine doesn't sputter.
Car is a 1989 fastback with ka24e and light tweaking work done to it.

Speed Limiter is only suppose to kick in 5th gear and around 120mph for the S14 KA, hoping S13 KA is same.....
SR is 112mph for speed cut/limiter....

i know its only supposed to kick in at 5th gear. Mine ocaisionally just decides to engage early. BTW, limit on 89 s13's is 115mph.

this will sound very childish, but today i was driving down the road and was comming to a stoplight. Well the lane next to me was empty so i moved over and this mustang decides to drop a gear and move in front of me. So my ego and right foot get the best of me so when the light turns green I stay real close to his ass as we both speed off (he obviously wasn't flooring it (it was a gt)). Well the engine revved strong all the way up to my 6100 shifting point through first and second but it got all crapy in third gear at around 4900-5100 rpms.
this is really pevving me off becasue my car had finally started to run great for about a month then it just decided to do this crazy shiznot.
I am going to try and check all of my electrical connections and will read the codes/reset the ecu and will report what i find out.
thanks for the replies, and it makes me feel good others are having the same problem.
P.S. For all of you previous honda owners did stupid crap keep going wrong with it? I have been a nissan owner for five years now and had a chevy as a first car. It seems as though both of my nissans (91 sentra & 90 240) just kept having little problems that just pevved me off. My next car (96-98 200sx) better not have these stupid ass problems or else i am off Nissan for good!!!

have you checked your fuel pump?
let us know how you go about checkin' it, cuz my searches for fuel pumps only resulted in walbro postings.. haha
i don't rev my car high all that much and even if i do, it doesn't seem to happen consistently...

my friend has a 5g civic hb, which is swapped with an b18 (integra ls motor) and he had something like that happpen right after we swapped the motor in.
the only thing different was his revs seem to kick back about a good 1,500 rmps. we later found out a ground wire was "loose", not disconnected but loose.
i know its a long shot but i hope that might help you next time you look in your engine bay.
good luck,
jayson
