View Full Version : Swapped in 89 SOHC Carpet into my 91. Much Nicer :)
Ever since Irena and I parted out my 89 SOHC Coupe I noticed the 89-90 Carpets were allot nicer. Last week I finally had some free time to swap it into my 91. Took about 3 hours, of course I cut the piece that goes in the center console closest to the firewall, but no one will ever know so it doesn't matter. Beats removing the dash...
The 89-90 Carpet is more industrial, and darker colored. Compared to the 91-94 Carpets which are more plush and way more susceptible to stains (and showing those stains).
3 Hours later I'm left with a cleaner/darker interior and $4.55 in pocket change :) Here are the results.

too bad you didn't get rid of the lame tweed on the seats/glovebox/door panels.

Nope, I might steal Irena's though since she has a LE. Its nice and suede like :) hehe
I know you can remove that stuff but what will it look like bare? Just a grey plastic im assuming? That would most likely look tacky.
My future plan would be to get s14 seats and katskinz leather which has the glove box and door panel leather replacements.

the glovebox looks bad without fabric...the door panels are vinyl under the fabric.
but yeah, you should just do the katskinz thing.

The door panels look good without the cloth on them... I got to drive huntz0r's car this weekend with the tweed removed and it looks/feels great. Some weird little holes get left behind though.
I also noticed that the '89-'90 carpet is nicer! I thought it was just me. It's not as plush but it's more rugged and better suited to a sporty car. I prefer the '91-'93 seat cloth material though.

Hey it looks nice I never knew that the 91-94s had different carpets. I do like the darker one better.
But kinda going away from your carpets I see that the panel thingy around your shift knob and headunit and ashtray, etc looks gray. Did you paint that, becasue it looks really nice. Mine is all stained up from previous owners and just doesnt look right.
I'm not a real big fan of people painting their interiors but that looks real nice. Care to share how you did it? Like paint it once let it dry then again then clearcoat it or something?
Ya, I hate the 89-90 seats. The fabric is cheap looking and a mix of dark blue and burgandy, makes it look purple in daylight. For some reason the 91-94 carpet seems to give off the same color effect in the sun.
As for the interior panels. I just painted them with PlastiKote or something like that. I did 3-4 coats of a dark grey and 3 layers clear coat. I used a dark grey because Ive seem what bright colors end up look like. Nasssty. Just choose something suttle when choosing your color you want to paint...

Yeah I do like my door panels with the tweed skins pulled off, although they aren't quite black underneath, more like CF-ish gray... I didn't get them to shine very well with just Armor All wipes either, so I'll have to try with the real stuff. Haven't decided whether I want to try and mask off the doors and spray the area black, or just live with it and not risk funkifying the surface texture.
Man I didn't realize the SOHC carpets were different either! I was already looking for a replacement for mine cause it's all nasty and stained, and it had car phone hardware mounted on it. Oh and it's probably part of why the interior stinks like swamp (moonroof leak, gotta put in some S14 seats too). I was planning to clean one up real good and dye it to about that shade, so that saves me some work, plus it's much nicer

i've noticed that stains come out of my 93 carpet very easily for those who don't want to swap it all out. i used a steam cleaner and it easily got out pop stains that have been sitting there for almost 2 years now, i was impressed.

Wow that looks amazing!
If you are going to keep those seats, I would leave the glovebox and doorpanels alone since they match with the seats & aluminum trim and they also provide a nice contrast.
I like little things like this in the interior too. I might go for the 89-90 model if it were not for the DOHC and chuki body which is my favorite OEM one. Then again someone is selling a 90 with a 91 bumper, so who knows...
What color are the 89-90 Glovebox, doorpanels? Are they the same color as the 89-90 carpet? I do no own one as you guys can see... ;)

i was watching some show with a bunch of rappers that had like $300,000 cars. anyways, one of the cars were a bentley. it had real bearskin carpet stock... :) haha, how cool is that??
oh back on the subject... im with dousan actually, the carpets going soon. i need to paint the floor after i pulled out the sound deading crap. nuthin looks better than a bare interior, momo wheel, sparco seat, and a cage! :)

hurleyboi514, im trying to score some cool floormats i see in japan. LAUFEN i think is the compnay, i forget, stitched checkered pattern, but its RHD (Grrrrrrr) , so trying to find a US one.hmm
i saw some in a S15 and a R34 in HK and seeing it in the mags is nice, but in person, wow high quality! :)

yeah that looks really good west. i was looking into that myself. but i decided i'll just steam vac my 92 carpet. plus mines pretty clean to start with.
irena or mark-hey do u know how much the katskins set cost? approx. i would think bout doing it if it didnt cost an arm and a leg
Anyone know where to get Floor Mats, Id like to get some Black ones with a Grey Edging? I know Autoanything.com makes them but im not paying 160$ for mats. If you dont know of any aftermarket makers anyone know if the s14 mats work in a s13?
masta: 89-90 Door Planel and Glove Boxs are the same nasty color as the seats. The only factory replacement would be to get the door/glove box from a s13 LE model.
CoasTek240: IIRC the Two Tone Kit costs about $600! :( But it comes with everything, Seat covers, Glove Box cover, door panels, etc. You will still need the install kit for like $30. I have some pictures of it that I could post that was installed on a s14 front seat. I can get a GB going for us possibly, or I can get a Zilvia.net discount. Ive talked to them before and it still might apply, if not I think if you mention your a member of twinturbo.net you can get a discount. Their site is http://www.leatherseats.com

Sorry to quote an image, but it's necessary.
Mark, on the right far most center console piece in the picture, what part goes in the rectangular opening on the right of the cigarette lighter? I've had nothing there since I got my fastback and I'd like to get my interior fully restored.
And props on the center console painting, looks really nice.
Oh, now that I look at the original before/after pictures again, I see what looks like a leather armrest. Is it? If so, where did you get it / how did you do it?
Thanks for the help.

Yeah, I've got manual side mirrors and that piece is missing as well. It looks so stupid with just a gaping hole there and I find it hard to believe that it just came from the factory like that. There must be some blank piece that fills in that hole... I tried looking it up at 1stnissanparts.com but couldn't find it. Blah. I may just try to make a little piece of black plastic to put in there eventually.
