I am The team leader of 'Midnight Boba'. I have been working on this project for the past year and thought it was time for you guys to see it.
My team built this car was build for a special racing series in SD, that requires you to build a car for under a thousand bux. We spend 9 months building, and cleaning up this 240z, we had the fastest overall car in the racing part, but got third due to last minute rule changes/politics and not winning the car show part. And we did all this while keeping it street legal and driving her to all the events and back home again. While the slower competition was trailering alot of their cars :)
We were unstoppable in the drag racing part of the series. And we also took top three at all the autocross events. Our best trick was to swap the turbocharger setup out at all the autocross events and swap back in the turbo. this got kinda old after doing it for 6 official races, and 5 test races. but it only takes about an hour to swap manifolds and ecu tunes.

I thought you guys would like to see our humble, small buget project that took more time and effort than money that made it big on TV.

They flew in from NY to film us racing, then they sent the media to be processed in England, then it shows up on speed channel in the USA and other countries.

'98 240sx KA24de engine/5-speed converted to obd1,
Holset Hy35w Turbocharger,
35mm turbosmart wastegate,
rx7 injectors,
Walbro 255 lph pump,
Stage-4 clutch with 6-puck disk,
2.75" strait through exhaust with resonators,
z31 clsd r200,
SRT-4 intercooler,
240sx radiator with taurus fan,
2.5 degrees of negitive camber up front,
Gutted interior save the dash and heater core guestimating 1,900 lbs?,
Push button start and missile launch switches for fan and ECU power,
E-mance custom tuned stock ecu from E-mance.com (http://www.e-mance.com) (owner of e-mance.com came over personally to tune it for free for our racing team, nice guy!) for e-85 ethanol, makes approx. 350-400hp with turbo at 20-25psi, at least 160Hp without turbo.
Street accel run is around 0-100 in 7 seconds with 205mm street tires. (have to fight wheelspin all the way up to third gear, chirps 4th)
The car is running n/a since it was autocrossed at the last race (left alone since the Speed channel filmed it racing last month), the turbo kit is ready to bolt on (takes an hour) and i have a tune for both setups.

The thing that cracks me up the most is the guy we got the engine from swapped in an s15 sr20det, and we took his old motor and made 2x the power at least of his swap. But we are thankful he was so kind to sell us the engine at a good deal. I wonder if he is on this forum, last i talked to him was before he got shipped off to the Middle East. I have alot more pictures and alot of technical knowlage from this extensive race car build. I also learned alot of things you need and don't need for a car to handle and drive fast and most importantly, start up and run and not have a single breakdown at all 6 racing events. Building something like this forces you to learn what is absolutely nessisary, and not wasteful. So go ahead and ask or request more pictures ppl.

550cc Rx7 injectors with a 1g turbo ford probe rail. the ka is completely stock, the secret is; the tune is for e85 ethanol, it does not detonate like gasoline.... got it from www.e-mance.com (http://www.e-mance.com), he took the time away from his busy schedule, came over and tuned it personally for free!! way cool guy!

..but ya, if it was running on gas, chances are it would have blown up by now from some detonation. I mean sheesh, 20-25psi with gasoline on stock ka can be risky!

e85 is very nice to work with, there is no problems with detonation. as this fuel basicly doesn't detonate, it simply misfires or loses power rather than pre ignition when the mixture is lean. It also runs alot cooler so we can get away running a smaller intercooler. it is $2.50 a gallon here in SD, and is 105 octane.

Yeah, we changed all the lines to e85 approved lines.. werent too worried about injectors dying (only had problem with jecs sidefeeds and e85) also had one walboro die on my drag car but not sure if it was e85 or the fact i pump 18volts to it

but since i tuned this car, it's ran great the owner beats it around at 20psi and pretty much destroyed everyone he's raced. funny stuff.. car does not look that great but is fasssst

welll, the car was not an autocross beast till we did some very important mods that made a huge impact on improving the handling for very little money. Besides most of the speed comes from a good driver.

the car understeers from the factory and has no negitive camber up front. we installed a ka, and pushed it back towards the firewall so you could say it was mid engine. that worsened the understeer, as the factory weight distribution was F-49% R-51%. Now it was so bad the nose was pointing up 3 inches. so we cut the $50/used generic lowering springs to even it out. Then i slotted the strut towers, then i repositioned the lower control arms outward to gain more camber up front. Combined with the junkyard lsd and welding in some rear sway bar brakets from a 260z, and adjusting the rear brakes perfectly,before it would lock the fronts up, now after the adjustment it will take full advantage of all 4 tires. well worth the extra effort! the car would stop on a dime, corner like a champ and pulled hard out of the turns. just need to know what accually makes a difference, and spend time getting there, rather than waste time and money with something that really doesn't matter. Our 36 year old car was the one to beat at most of the events!

this car has changed my outlook on building fast race cars. I now spend more time finding, than accuiring that setup. Speed is not purchased, it is earned with driving skill, and with proper effective planning and tuning.

The $1,000 bux limit is for parts and the car. however we are allowed to sell up to $500 in parts off the car to gain a maximum of $1,500. We ran two setups, turbo and non turbo. Our Autox n/a setup was $700ish, and the drag setup with turbo was $1,100ish.
But let me say this, we spent more time looking for those stupid deals than anything else! it was a pita! but worth it in the end. I have alot of parts that will fetch higher prices, but we got lucky in the junkyard or found something on cl from someone desperate or a nice guy sold it cheap or donated to help us out.
We sold the clock, the radio, the bumper and some misc. knobs and parts and made about $450 in parts.

I was a fun race, but there was too much drama, like rules changes halfway through the season, and the event director was giving penalties for no good reason, and was giving parts to help teams... blah blah... some stuff i hear some stuff was bs... too much drama like i said. if another guy ran it i will do it again but build a car with less rust. like maybe an s13 or something...
