Car is a 1995 240sx.

My passenger side window had not worked since I got the car. But lately has been phantomly working for days at a time then all together stopping. No clicking or motor noise or anything. I did some investigating on my own with a multimeter. Testing the switches both switches receive power but only got 12 volt output when the switch is pushed for the window to go down. Nothing when the switch is pushed to the up position. Heres the kicker the window wont go down even though its outputting 12 volts. Which makes me think the motor is bad... but then the window starts working a week later. Any insight?

No, that's not what he needs. Please read the post and actually understand the OP's problem before spewing useless info. The window amplifier drives the driver side window only. It does not affect the passenger side.

OP- The motor is a reversal rest at ground, even if one leg sees power, the other side may not, therefore it won't work. You're saying both switches show voltage at 'down', but not 'up'? The passenger side switch is a sub switch, it feeds power through it from the driver side. If you're not getting voltage from both legs of the circuit from the driver side then the master switch is bad.

An easier way to test both switches is to check for power directly at the motor, from each switch. Checking there will tell you which part is bad.

so ive got a similar problem and hope maybe projRDM can help me too...

s13 passenger window

ive tried 2 known good driver window switches. ive tried 2 known good passenger window switches. passenger window will not go up or down. will run with hotwires directly to the door switch plug. there is 12v to gnd at the passenger door dash plug. there is continuity from the same plug to the door switch. there is 0v from the door switch to gnd. (the same wire that is cont. to the 12v @ dash plug)

history: window was working when i got the car. passenger door sw. would run window down but not back up. took whole wiring harness out of car cause it was schistey and chopped up. put less chopped up harness back in. pass. window didnt work at all(unless hotwired). took less chopped up harness out and put fresh harness in. pass window still doesnt work.

is there a fuse, relay, timing control box, or something else i may have potentially overlooked re-hooking up that would allow the driver window to run but cause the pass window to not run?

its not the lock out switch either!

The master switch runs the passenger side motor, so if you've tried several switches the motor must be culprit.

Unplug the motor in the door and power it directly with a 9.6V-14.4V battery, bypassing all switches. If the motor is good, something is shorted or damaged in the harness between the doors.

i plugged a 12v source into the passenger door-switch plug and into the dash-door plug. both times it runs right up and down. when i try to power it from the driver side dash-door plug it doesnt go. i think thats where the short is. i will be doing more research on it tomorrow in the day light. thanks.

the dash side plug on the passenger door harness was all jacked up. thanks for the help guys!

But he never mentioned anything about his LH window having problems. So it can't be the master switch.

It ended up being the passenger window switch.

How do you figure?

The master switch drives the passenger side window, the passenger switch is just a sub switch that connects the circuit. The driver side window is driven with the amplifier in the door. The master switch can go bad and still trigger the amplifier, it's two separate circuits within, one switches high current, the other switches a low current ground.

Well he said he was getting voltage at the RH switch. Like you said, the passenger is just a sub switch. If the master works, then the RH switch should work since they're on the same circuit unless the RH switch is bad of course.
Hold up, hold up...which problem are you talking about? I'm talking about the original one that was posted, not the guy who thread jacked.
