I asked a friend why my tires look so different and he works with tires and had no idea.

My question is, I am running 245/40ZR17 on the rears on a 17x9 rim while in the front i am running 205/40R17 on 17x7 rims.

My problem is they look totally different, the height on the fronts look more like 30 series tires, apart from the apparent width what does the "Z" stand for on the tires ?

try 215/45 or 205/45 look up tire calculator on google.
z stands for the speed rating

Ok well won't running 245/40 and 215/45 negatively mess up you balance?

what balance? not my balance, maybe on the car. but changing almost anything will change the ballance. go to Tire Rack - Your performance experts for tires and wheels (http://www.tirerack.com) and read up on tires. or just get 215/45 and be done with it. or 225/40 :)

i was thinking of getting 235/40 for the fronts, how does that sound, or is that going to be too wide ? This is on an s14

235/40 would be too big for 7 inch rim, you could try but it will have funny bubble shape. On my s14 I currently run 235/40 all around on a 17x9 wheel. fits good, will probably go 245 or 255 when I need new tires.

ok, the 40 in 245/40 is a lot larger than the 40 in 205/40

the 40 is just the sidewall height in relation to the section width, so 40% of 245 is bigger than 40% of 205.

you can use this calculator to get tires that are the same height.

I looked at the tire size calculator,so your saying i should try 225/40/17 they look the closest to the sidewall height of the rear 245/40 ?
