Alot of my friends didnt like GT3 because it was so grueling. It got boring after a while, but the realism factor is great. Ill still buy any GT series =].

Yes GT4 is allegedly going to have online play. I also read a rumor that there will be an option to download new cars and test drive them before downloading. I think that would be badass to download a "drift pack" with all the soarers, cefiros, and other obscure cars that don't usually make it into games.

go here and read all sorts of rumors:

http://www.gtplanet.net/forum/f-55.html

oh, I went to our barnes and noble to see if they had the EVO magazine, but they only had the May issue and these pictures are from the June one, I guess the person that scanned them in was from the UK

i did.. but i replaced it with a new one since i bought the 2 year replacement plan from bestbuy :p
ps1 and ps2 has a bad case of weak lense..
the syndrome starts after 1.5~2 years of owning/using it..
i knew about this before i bought my ps2 two years ago, so i went ahead and bought the 2 year replacement plan :)

Wow, I hadn't heard that Gt4 was even in development yet! Thanks for the info!

Hmm.....Christmas '03 release date.... 8 months from now...

I've owned GT3 for something like 2 years now, and I'm still only 24% done with it. Guess I better try and finish it before the next one gets released....

This is all very bad news gents....don't you see! I will lose my life again. Endless hours trying to get further, win another car, or beating that da_mn GT40 with a underpowered car. This marks the end of my marriage. The addiction is too great with GT

Ok, I thought I'd be a nice guy and give up some more info on GT4.

IGN.com had a Q&A session with the maker of the game and he said they wanted to push the limits of the PS2. Plus this would be the last game in the series to be played on the PS2 I guess they will keep making sequals if the game sells, but they will be on PS3

GT4 looks great, I have seen some pics of old cars, but didn't identify them. But they also have a New York City stage, which has time square and such.

This will take up a lot of my time of course, but I hope replays are a lot more advanced so I can get a lot more angles when I make vids.

I still have a vid on my hard drive, just too lazy to upload, maybe I'll do it this weekend.

some more stuff I found on a forums.
Here is a pic of the new steering wheel, momo shift knob  :)
http://www.businesswire.com/photowire/pw.051403/bb4.jpg

Someone also had thier car used in the game and he did a write up on what happeneed and the cars he saw. Kinda lengthy but gives you a little insite on the first part of the process they go through.

Just to let you know the updates...

As you may know from my earlier posting a couple of months ago, I was chosen to have my VW featured in the new GT4 game.

My car is a 1966 VW Beetle with it's original 1285cc engine... hardly a supercar, but nice to see that Sony are interested in having some of the more simpler cars in the game! I've been told that you can start with a car like this, and then "upgrade" the engine/suspension etc as you win more money. Sounds cool.

The venue for the photographic event was at Millbrook proving ground in England (Bedfordshire), so it was over 3 hours drive for me, living on the South Coast. Unfortunately when I got there the security searched my car for cameras, so they all had to be handed in, so I don't have any pics... SORRY! Car manufacturers use Millbrook to test prototypes and yet-to-be-released cars, and they want these to remain "out of sight", so to speak, hence the camera ban. (I saw several cars, obviously Vauxhall/Opals covered in disguised black tape )

I arrived at the end of the third and last day of the photographic shoot, so most of the more exotic cars had already been photographed.

Basically, I had to drive my car to various areas of the track where various photographic and audio sessions were carried out on it.

At first I had to park in an open space where the photographer took hundreds of photos of my car, including things like the indicator housings from all angles! The guy spent at least half an hour constantly photographing every aspect of my car from all angles with a digital camera. The then stuck a box on the door of my car which sampled the exact paint colour! They also took a photographic sample of the weave pattern on my seats, so it looks like it's going to be a very accurate model when it's finished for the game! Other photos included the speedometer, fuel gauge, dashboard, carpet... basically everything.

After that was the "long distance" photos. I parked my car in a red box marked on the ground and my car was photographed on the side and rear from long range (several hundred metres away). After that I turned it around and they photo'd the front and other side.

Then was the lighting and "3D effects". Inside a big tent half my car was surrounded with cameras (I guess with half my car photographed they could just mirror the image to get the other half). They then photo'd my lights, front: off, dipped, full beam, rear: off, on, brake (with main lights off and on). Also the indicator off and on at the front and back. Even the interior light!!!!

After that was the sound. They recorded my car in the following:
horn
starting up
revving on and off (like: vvVVvvvvVVVvvvvVVVvvv)
idle
1k RPM
2k RPM (etc)
They did this twice for the engine lid being open and closed!
(rather confused the sound guy who didn't realise these old VW's had a rear mounted engine, so he had to move all his sound gear

There might have been another process in amongst all that, but I've forgotten right now... and the paperwork is at home

Also, to top the day off a test driver too us for a ride around the testing circuits in a Citroen Saxo VTS... over the steep bumps, around sharp corners etc, and also around the testing "bowl" at ~135MPH. (then said that he shouldn't go any faster as it's a customers car )

So, cars? What others were there? Like I said at the beginning of the post I arrived at the end of the last day, so most of the exotic stuff had already been done.

Ones I saw were:
1966 VW Beetle 1300 (mine!!)
1949 VW Beetle Standard
1958 VW Beetle
1980's Scirocco
Golf (GTI??)
VW Passat W8
Two new TVRs, brought from the factory! (one prototype in metallic brown, the other car was in fancy multicoloured changing paint)
Morgans (again brought from the factory) - Aero8 and the old style one
1970's TVR (Vixen?)
AC Cobra (new one)
1972 Jaguar XJ6
Bristol 402
There were some fast fords, Cosworth's and the like, as well as some "kit cars", but the exact details I can't remember as they left fairly early.

I'm afraid that's all I can remember for now, but if there's any more I can think of I'll post them! Over three days there was about 130 cars. I *did* meet the guy who said he would be responsible for creating my VW on the computer - I was gonna give him my email address, but he disappeared

BTW, there were a couple of journalists there too - one from Top Gear Magazine (who took a photo of me in my car) and another from FHM.

Anyway, hope that satisfies your curiosity for a while

They told me the game's due for release late in 2003.

The article I took that out of was from a Q&A session with Polyphony Digital's President and Producer Kazunori Yamauchi.

as for the AI, I dont know about you guys but when ever my tires start to wear out the computer cars swarm in for the kill and spin me out. In GT4 is says the AI will be more considerate, and not just blindly follow the perfect racing line.

Damn, thats gonna be a lot of cars to play with! Now I'll have no life when it comes out. Oh well.:D :D I'll keep looking for more links to keep everybody happy until it comes out. Plus it gives me something to do during the summer.

Anybody heard if they're gonna have body kits you can put on the cars?? If not, who wants to start a petition saying we want bodykits, tire marks that stay, and various other stuff?? I would yet I'm not to good at making em.

No body kits, but i don't know for sure, takes too much time the way they make cars, and they would have to find cars with kits to screen.

Info about the game:

Offering more than ever before, the world's favourite racing game is back and it's the best!

25 Jun 03 Thirty-two million sales later and the Gran Turismo series is about to enter a whole new territory of play - online racing. It's Gran Turismo! It's online! Got that? Right, let's continue.
So how do you improve on what's gone before? More cars, more courses... those are a given, but what of the really innovative stuff? How about you get to race the history of the automobile!

MORE THAN BEFORE
Godfather of GT Kazunori Yamauchi has stated that GT4 will include more cars than any previous Gran Turismo. GT2 remains the current record-holder with over 500 cars. Depending on whom you listen to, estimates for the number of different vehicles in GT4 start at 500 and reach the low thousands. We'll have to wait a little while longer for the definitive answer, but the confirmed number currently stands at over 500, and between now and release that number can only rise.

With the good news we also have to bring you the bad. Polyphony Digital has confirmed that there won't be car model damage and the online play won't support the USB headset, so you can't talk to your opponents online. Hmm, no model damage, but don't worry, that doesn't rule out loss of engine performance due to crashes. Nice.

RACE THE WORLD
As for online play, details of different races and rules haven't been revealed yet, so there's still hope that you'll be able to form clans and have three-vs-three or two-vs-two-vs-two races. Did you get the hint there? Yep, another let-down. Online play will have a grid of six cars only. Sony hasn't discounted offline play supporting more, but we have a feeling that any more than six cars on a grid will remain a pipe dream.

There are no more details as yet on the rumours that you'll be able to trade used cars online. However, used cars (much missed in GT3) are definitely in GT4, according to Yamauchi. He confirmed this indirectly by stating that a 10-year-old second-hand car will feel noticeably different to a brand new model. Aha!

TOUGHER, MEANER
Yamauchi indicates that the development of GT4 has been far more challenging than the previous titles. "Gran Turismo 3 was easy for us on PS2 because it was the first GT game on PlayStation 2. GT4 is harder because we have to outdo our own work on the same system. We have been rethinking and working hard to create a better game, and we have set ourselves goals and objectives for GT4.

"We have not extracted all there is from the PS2. We have rethought the procedures and rebuilt our technology to create an even better-looking game. We hope you agree."

PRETTIER, FASTER
The most obvious improvement is visual. The cars have always looked outstanding, but now the environments are catching up. "We have been able to increase the quality of the graphics because our designers' skills have evolved, not the hardware," says Yamauchi.

Three new environments are confirmed so far, with courses based on real locations. The most visually spectacular is a dusty rally circuit around the lip of the Grand Canyon. If that doesn't rock your world, how about cruising your way through the familiar streets of New York. And for the real car freaks there's the famous Tsukuba circuit - a favourite of Japanese motor manufacturers for vehicle testing.

WHAT A VIEW
There's far more trackside detail than in GT3, while another noticeable improvement on the rally courses is the wide open spaces you get to race through, so you're no longer boxed in by rows of trees. The New York circuits are spectacular, with more building detail than in the Seattle and Tokyo street circuits of GT3. Shadows from buildings fall across the track and famous landmarks are easily identifiable. It looks certain that Paris and London are also going to feature in GT4, so forget the car fanatics - this could be massive with tourists!

JAPANESE GLOBETROTTERS
Like everything in the Gran Turismo universe, the focus in GT4 is on realism and detail. Yamauchi and his team have travelled around the globe in their pursuit for authenticity. "We spent 10 days photographing and studying the nature of the Grand Canyon," says Yamauchi. "We studied a 40km diameter area to create our course. The rally courses are better because our technology is better and because of our physics engine, the game is easier to control."

PHOTO FRENZY!
Yamauchi and his team didn't just travel around the globe to photograph the landscapes. Another reason for their extensive travel was to find and choose the cars for GT4. The team has visited the US, Italy, France, Germany and the UK on its travels, with an army of staff and digital cameras in tow.

With military precision, the team hit a country and take over a racetrack, while manufacturers deliver a procession of pristine vehicles. Digital photos are taken of each car from a variety of angles. Then the engine sound is recorded at different increments for five seconds at a time.

Yamauchi says: "We have created an all-new car design procedure which helps to create better-looking and easier-to-create cars." We can only assume that easier-to-create cars means that we'll get to play with more of them when GT4 is released.

EVEN BETTER THAN THE REAL THING
It's this passion and attention to detail that has earned the series the tagline 'the real driving simulator'. As realistic as we have found it so far, Yamauchi is confident that GT4 is going to be the most authentic Gran Turismo yet. "This is the first major refinement we have made to the car physics in GT since the orginal Gran Turismo," says Yamauchi.
The team has even been evaluating the time difference between cars racing around circuits, comparing reality with the performance of in-game equivalents. Any time difference between reality and the simulation is noted and then carefully adjusted, ensuring GT4 inches ever closer to realism.

DRUNK DRIVERS
Another area of improvement the team is focusing on is the artificial intelligence of the computer drivers. A common criticism aimed at the series is that computer drivers all try to follow the same line and will collide with each other needlessly because of this. This flaw is notably absent in the current build of the game. Smashing and bumping computer drivers looks like being a thing of the past.

It's also clear that the computer drivers are now far more competitive, they make fewer mistakes and are now more likely to catch up with the leader towards the end of a race..

PAST TO PRESENT
So far we're promised that GT4 will play better, and we can see from the screenshots that it looks better. What about the cars, though? Yamauchi leaves us with a bit of a riddle. "We want players to re-experience the history of cars, from the birth to the present, in a way only possible with Gran Turismo."

What does this mean? Well, we know that the Simulation mode has been renamed GT Universe for GT4. There's also the addition of virtual museums among the new car manufacturers and used-car dealers. What this adds up to is a far wider variety of cars. Most importantly, with the addition of vintage vehicles, and a time span that ranges from the birth of the race car to the latest models, GT4 simply offers the history of racing.

Gran Turismo 4 is scheduled for UK release in 2004 and US release in 2003. We'll bring you more information as soon as we can.

Some pics I found.

this is why i got a ps2 haha. yea i read that gt4 is gonna be more historical in terms of car selection than the rest. can you say datsuns??? the 500+ cars supposedly available takes care of my biggest gripe about gt3, but i sure hope they fix the rest of my complaints though:

1) random prize cars suck. i hate having to race a series at least 4 times to get all the cars. i say "at least" cuz a lot of times you even win the same car!!!! WTF!! weak sauce!! this especially sucks on the endurance races and the professional league races where theres 10 races and each race is like 10+ laps.

2) the car descriptions in gt3 SUCKED!!! i hate how it scrolled along the bottom. this meant u had to read everything all at once, and memorize it, or else you'll be forced to go through it again. GT2 was better cuz it was all in paragraph form, so deciding between which cars to buy were a lot easier.

3) menus can still be tweaked better. especially when buying stuff, why do i need to press X 4 or 5 times to install something. that last screen taht informs you of the increase in horsepower is pretty useless.

basically...i thought that gt2 was a lot better than gt3 except in graphics of course.

ok complaining all done. bring on gt4 WOOOHOOO!!

1. Ya random cars really did suck, thats why a lot of non die hard fans dont really play it anymore, cuz it'll take way to long to get cars you want.
2. Ya at times I never even bothered to read them, big waste of my time. And plus with this history stuff I am really going to want to read these. So hope they change em, and maybe make some of them more in depth.
3. Ya that was a pain. But I got in the rythm at times. Its especially a pain when I had butt loads of money and I was going to make a drift car for a vid or something. Having to go through those menus.

James - ya we are gonna have to tear it up. Make our little Zilvia crew, except we should put the Z to use. Alreasy saw the pics of the 240Z :D.

This history stuff sounds real intriguing. And of course used cars are back so I hope there is no limit on garage space. Cuz I am gonna have loads of old school cars.

I still remember GT2 with my r32 tearing it up. But this time around used cars will not perform as good, which is good I guess. And at least they somewhat are throwing the car damage thing in, that way people who hit you in turns on purpose will get screwed.

And man I really cant wait. I just need to figure out how I am gonna set up steering wheel and pedals, prolly onna have to get some sort of desk.

wow, those pics

GT has been great because its a single player game, and a party game at the same time. I find myself goin to my friends house almost every weekend to tune our cars and race each other, and see who can drift the best. I remember one time, my friend started bashing japanese cars and saying that jap cars are only good for straights, then I shut him up with the escudo. lol. Good times, good times.

Well thats just downright unfair. Escudo is a crazy car. But I hate driving it, too fast for its own good.

Where did he get this idea of japanese cars bieng for straights only:confused: , if anything domestics are more for straights, and they do a damn good job (at least some).

I had a bet going with my friend before the GT3 came out. He said that he would own me with a Cobra, and I said I'd own him with a skyline. Well you all know the end of that one :p
But now this hole petty domestic vs. import thing doesnt matter, specially since he loves driving my car :D

Hmm thats gonna be kinda gay, but kinda cool.

Judging will be odd, cuz then everyone will have to drift perfectly. But it is also gonna be pretty gay cuz in GT3 it was too easy to drift with a 4WD car and sim tires. Hopefully they make you drift with racing tires :D. That'll make all the GT3 drifters rely on suspension more than gross power and sim tires.

But either way I know there will be drifitng rooms for online play, and there are gonna be some crazy people out there. I'll plan on bieng one of em.

And wow that vid is nice. Game looks gorgeous. Glad to see that the really might be competing with the likes of Ralli Sport for XBOX.

The previous rally was kinda weak, but now it looks damn well good.

We need more videos, with sound, i wanna hear what the cars sound like this time around.

all of my drift cars in gt3 have racing tires
and my supra has super soft racing tires and i can drift it easy
and its all because of the awesome power of my force feedback steering wheel :D
to bad my video card has some bug.. i cant record any of it..
i just mastered feint drift and e-brake drifting that allows me to drift waaaaayyy before the turn

First you have to get a network adapter for the ps2, and you have to set that up to work with your internet connection(dsl, cable or dial up). For this game, i don't think you will be able to use dial up, just like most of the newer games that have come out that have online play in them, you have to have broadband connection. I guess it will be sort of like auto modellista where there are rooms to go in and then you pic a game you want to race in or something like that

well i figured i would just add to this thread, instead of starting a new one. But yes it is a very sad day.

GT4 has been pushed back to May 1st. It really sucks, i'm not sure how many of you know but i went to the store the other day and they said it was pushed back.

Would you rather have a game now that is super glitchy, or wait a couple months for a well thought out and unrushed game?

I got the first release of GT2 and that game had so many glitches. Even with all the races won, you could only get to like 98% of the game done. Cars would randomly disappear and other crap. On my copy of GT3, when I use my steering wheel with the game, it only registers 75% of the braking, that gets annoying in the harder races.

I am glad PD is pushing back the release, hopefully they incorporate things like 3D interactive crowds and pit crews, and perhaps tweaking the physics so that it is a little bit better.

Also, my grades should be much better next semester without GT4 being out :D

The ps2 can only go so far graphics wise. Adding 3d interactive crowds would sacrifice from the gameplay a WHOLE lot.

GT4 wont be as dramicacally different from GT3 as GT3 was from GT2, since GT2 isnt a DVD. However, You can only fit so much on a DVD, so GT4 wont be any longer than GT3.

The good...

the physics engine is 3 times better than GT3

the cars look better

animated crowds look good but still 2D

The bad...

AI sucks @$$

Tracks don't look polished (except Citti de Aria)

Penalty system only aplies to driver not the computer

Hopefully they'll fix all this w/ the official release

I have my copy of the GT4 prologue and I think the AI is alot better then in Gt3 if you race some of the license test like the 10 lap race in the McLaren F1 car it takes a little bit to catch up to everyone, in GT3 it would take me 3 laps in a less hp car to catch the pack and pass everyone, I like gt4 prologue, but it is just a demo, so hopefully some of the glitches will be taken out, anyways, I am going to pick up my jdm ps2 today so I can take some screen shots 4 you guys.

To bring this back up...

GamePro did an article on GT4, somewhat the same stuff, but all together with a few new things I didn't know. Here are some things I got from it (its about 4 or 5 pages).

Some of this info is pretty old but some may not know
- Over 500 cars
- New and used
- Online mode
- User created Tournaments
- Sony Created Tournaments
- Chat rooms by car make
- No damage, but instead there will be a penalty for intentional bumping. Basically you will be limited to a certain speed for a few seconds which will vary by track
- In an interview with Kazunori Yamauchi (Polyphony's president), he said they might throw in damage via physics, for example your car will pull to a certain side.
- Drifting competitions will be in, most likely working like D1
- Drift comps will have thier own unique replay styles
- Drag Racing might make it in there
- The hard drive will have some sort of purpose (most likely to download cars, but that is from GamePro, not the creators)
- Another track was announced called "Costa d'Amalfi", looks like a Cote D'Azur in the shot they have. Tight turns, uphill/downhill, on an Italian Island
- New veiw, its just a little further back, and a little higher
- A lot more tuning parts, and more customization
- Of course the wheel was talked a little more about.

Might be stuff I am leaving out, but if you didn't get it you should have gotten on the free subscription chance that was posted on 240SXforums :p.

Can you get the HDD seperately? It doesn't seem too bad $100 for it and FFXI, so I am sure it'll be the same for GT4. So in total $250 will be spent on this game (with the wheel), and probably money to setup a seat :).

I went on a madman's search a couple weeks ago to find Ferrari 355 challenge for the PS2 and foundmyself in EACH of the 5 EBs in my city BEFORE finding it, but in the last of them, I found like 2 other games to buy and the guy in the store was looking to presell me GT4, and when I questioned what WAS the day to expect the game to be out and he, without pause, told me that it would be 07/01/04... I declined for 2 reasons:
1: That is 4 FUCKING MONTHS
2:07/01/04 is my BIRTHDAY, I will find SOMEONE to buy the game for me, why the fuck should I pay for it?

I played the Prologue a few nights ago at a friend's house.. Its only a few cars, and a few tracks.. and is mostly in Japanese.
I just drove the Evo, STi, and R34 on the Tsukuba Circuit (I wanted to show him how similar the STi and Evo (he drives an Evo) are in performance.. and how much better the R34 is!). Didn't even realize that I had seen video of the track before until I was a few turns into; I thought it was kinda funny..

Overall, the game still looks pretty much the same. Theres only so much that can be done on a console system with super low resolution.
The vehicle dynamics feel MUCH better than they do in GT3.. The Evo really felt like it was an Evo; just the rate at which it rolled, the steering ratio, rate of acceleration.. all very familiar. I don't know about the sound, though.. hm. Wasn't really listening. Though, the Subaru sounded just like a boxer

It should be a really good game and easily put GT3 on the shelf as it did with GT2.
