Hi everyone. Im going this week to pick up my S13 with Red top. Im going out of state to pick it up and then plan on making the 7 hour drive back in my newly acquired s13. Any suggestions from anyone whos made a long drive in a swapped s13 would help. Moral support also greatly appreciated!!

If it was done right and runs right, you'll be fine.

You'll know if there's any major problems by the time you get home.

Everything mechanical seems in good repair. I am replacing a waterpump that is draining at the weep holes. The car just had its wire harness replaced and dyno'd but the wastegate had trouble holding over 11 lbs. Should this be a concern for the trip?

If it's highway travel, just stay out of boost.

if he gets home.........
lets see how badly this SR got hacked up.
If the water pump is leaking, fix it before you drive it.

you make is sound like SR's are not made to be driven long distances... Its an Engine, it madeto be driven.
Ive made countless 8 hour drives on my SR without problems

Reminds me of when I picked up my current S14 in NC. On the way back the CEL came on and i blew a tire. Thought it was a bad omen...fixed the problems, been good since then 09'.
OP: Have the car checked over by a local mechanic of you don't trust the guy's work. Also, if the car has been converted for a while the owner would/should have fixed any major mechanical issues. Just drive around the bock...beat it up a bit and see if it seems road worthy.

you are completely right yet what you seem to forget is that people (for the most part) do not do the work required to actually make these engines reliable. in many aspects of the build they will crap out on you(mainly the hack job wiring) that is why he is curious about it.

you should be fine if its in good condition. i bought mine from Virgina and drove back home (Texas) 24 hour drive. 12 hour straight driving/3 hour sleep in car behind target/12 hour straight to home. can ran perfect other then no a/c :/ but fixed that now and ice cold.

Thanks for all the support. I do plan on replacing the pump there. Im assuming the water pump is fairly straight forward. And i def intend on staying out of boost. I thinks its the perfect time of year to plan this drive with no a/c tho.

I would be so scared to drive a swapped car I've never seen 8 hours.
I have driven my swapped car 16 hours without even thinking twice.

Ive seen and been in this car many times. Im buying from a friend here, When we went on deployment he drove the car to his home in GA. Hes selling me the car for a crazy cheap amount. Def. His loss and I am roommates with the original owner who paid for the swap.

Ive never driven an s13/sr and am def. a lil weary of such a long drive with one. I was looking for the general concerns of the engine/chassis.

Well, the same motor/chassis combo was mass produced in Japan. I think it's a solid combo. ;)
On a serious note, I would say replace the water pump and it should be fine. If not, just keep an eye on the temperature and add water/coolant accordingly.

i drove out from philadelphia to revenna ohio to get my s14 ..
after loading up the car and putting in the turn signals did i notice a ripped coupler on the hot side of the intercooler ..
good thing the guy lived minutes from summit racing super store ..
made it home with no problems ..
since then i have replaced nearly everything ..even put a kouki front ..
GOOD LUCK and enjoy the trip ..

NO. if the engine was done properly it will be fine to drive. i dont know how it is out there but i know from first hand experience how many SRs in California have been installed horribly/incorrectly. this inevitably results in them breaking down suddenly. SRs are a dime a dozen out here(and it seems thats how much money they put into installing them as well from the looks of it)

seems like you know the car pretty well, you should be fine.
don't forget to check the odvious stuff (tires, oil, check for any leaking or buring fluids, check to make sure all the lights are working and what not.) if you can bring a spare tire or two with you and bring some basic tools and zip ties with just incase.

In a recent change of events. Ive decided to ship the car due to not wanting to drive the car several states without it being registered. Current owner jumped bandwagaon and turned plates in earlier than he said. OH well. I guess paying the $419 shipping fee will save me from eating the gas station hot dogs along the way. NOW, i play the waiting game....
