View Full Version : KA/SR transmission grinds. Swapped from auto. Weird. Help.

Alright so last October I had my car swapped from an automatic transmission to a 5 speed at Unnatural Inc. The transmission grinded from the moment I drove it away and then when they put in a "new" transmission it grinded too in almost the exact same spots. Very similar.
I finally just said fuck it and let them screw me over. I drove my KA with a grindy transmission from then until about a month ago. I recently swapped an SR20DET into my car. The motor I bought was in very good condition internally. It had been babied. So I figured I would finally be rid of grinding transmissions.
Before putting in my SR I did a brand new Exedy Stage 2 clutch, resurfaced the stock flywheel and put in a new throwout bearing among other things to the motor.
Upon driving my car for the first time after the swap I found that this transmission grinds. Very much like my KA tranny did.
My KA transmissions (from Unnatural) would grind from 1st to 2nd and then going from 3rd to 2nd was terrible. Reverse had a nice clip going into it and 1st from 2nd was hard to do.
My SR transmission grinds from 1st to 2nd and going into 3rd from either direction has a slight clip in it. Reverse is fine and going into 1st from 2nd is fine. It has the same bad grind from 3rd into 2nd.
So am I really that unlucky that I got two transmissions with the exact same shitty syncros or is it something else...Something more?
Anyone with any similar experience help me out please!

i've tried 3 different trannys in my 240. all seem to do the same thing, grind going into second. have you tried a different fluid yet? i put cheapo fluid in and it works pretty good now. i also got solid motor and trans mounts, and i think that helped keep the trans from moving around alot.

Maybe it's your driving. :hide:

Yeah Ive changed fluids on the KA ones and it didnt do anything.
And it would have to be the driving of everyone who has touched my car because its not only me who has the problem when driving my car.

Mine grinds going into 4th 75% of the time...Ive heard SR transmissions tend to do that but not 3rd-2nd.

1st i have to say;
your not putting in the correct amount of fluid, or your not using amsoil MTG.
I have a very used transmission, and it maybe grinds once in a blue moon.

Are auto and manual transmission mounts the same?

Tried adjusting the clutch pedal? Maybe its engaging/disengaging too low...

^^That. And did you even take either tranny to get inspected for defects while its out?? It's cheap and helps in determining what your problem really is.. That's the first thing you do when doing a tranny swap.

PS: Bled the clutch line and got rid of the dampner box??? Do those 2 things first, then adjust the pedal.

We bled the clutch line
What dampner box?
Ive never adjusted a clutch pedal. I know that my pedal engages really high compared to other cars Ive driven.

No they are different, but any 5 speed tranny cross member from an S13/14 sr or ka will work.

I agree with adjust clutch pedal. When the engine and tranny was in my brothers car, everything was smooth. No grinding or such. Before we swapped it into my car, we had clutch slave replaced with new one. Started to grind almost everytime i shift to fifth. Changed BRAND new fluid after i put BRAND new fluid in befor swap and got a new rear input shaft seal just for security (leaks) and still grinds.
Either check your pedal or maybe your clutch master cylinder has a small leak somewhere??? If i hold my down clutch pedal for a long time, it starts to soften up just a tad and you can tell it engages at a slightly different spot.

How are they different? I bolted an automatic one right up with no problems because the one on my SR tranny was shot and when I gave away my KA motorset the mount was still on the tranny.

so you had a ka/ ka tranny and then swapped to sr/ sr tranny and had problems with both? either both are bad or they were installed incorrectly

They are different i know first hand since mine was an auto to manual swap as well, however I did the swap myself and compared the two. Even the rubber mount is different, but that is more similar to the manual rubber mount than the cross members are.
Manual X member on top and Auto on the bottom, if you look closely you can see the arrow stamp indicator. They are different as you can see, what I didn't take a pic of the side of each to show the difference in the arc of each mount. It may bolt on if you turn it 180 degrees it but that doesn't make it right.

Get rid of the dampner loop...

I dont think I even have that loop anymore but I dont remember. Ill check when I re-bleed tomorrow night.
Im assuming that I have a 5 speed crossmember but I know that the mount I have is from an automatic because I pulled it myself from the junkyard. It bolted right in. I called NAPA auto parts and checked with them if they had an option for a manual tranny mount and for an auto tranny mount in their books and it is just one mount. So that would lead me to beleive they are the same.

thats a crossmember.
this is a mount, which can be different, but are interchangeable.

Right. My crossmember has to be right since its holding a 5 speed tranny now correct? The mount on there is from an automatic tranny but it fits perfect and NAPA auto parts didnt have any option for 5 speed or auto so it should be the same...
So its something else...

i've had three different trannies. the first one grinded into second, the second one grinded into third, and now the third tranny is like butter. it's a part of owning an old car.

do u have new clutch slave and master cyl?
Odysseus

I dont want to buy another tranny and put it in if its not even the problem. But if I have to..
Slave and master are the ones from the 5 speed swap...
