Let me get this straight. Your car wouldn't start, so you started taking things apart. Did you check for fuel, spark, and compression before you diagnosed a timing problem.

^^ what he said.
And the reason your chain is not tight is because there is no oil pressure in the chain tensioner

maybe the bolt holding the main sprocket got loose
importdude

loose will still start
If you have not removed the chains/cam
most likely it does not have anyhting to do with your "non starting car"

well what else can it be? casue im out of options if this doesnt fix it. if i dont get it fixed by saturday the 12th, i'll buy my freinds engine and swap it in. plus he'll include a 5 speed tranny. but i want to get this engine running as well.
milage on this engine/car is only 127k

Have you tried lining up your timing marks to see if your chains have jumped?

well the engine in the pictures is at top dead center, and it looks like its ok. all the timing equipment is to spec. just the chain is really loose

ok, so the chain looks loose. did you rotate the engine backwards at all when trying to put it on 1st piston tdc? that would cause slack in the timing chain.

get a new tensioner, and also the chain looks like its off a tooth or more... evin with no tentioner installed there shouldent really be any slack in the chain, all the slack should be on the left side.. i retimed my cams and sprockets from scratch and i had a problum like this. i could set to tdc an redo the entire cam timeing.

wrong
u will need to spin x number of times to reach the timing marks on the lower chain. just cuz its tdc and timing chain does not line up with dot does not mean the chain is off a tooth
what i would might as well do is
reset the upper cam chains to the markings

true. but its not starting.. if its off by 1 tooth it should start and run like ass, but if its more than that it probably wont... but its worth a shot to check

yah it seems like he did not mess with any chains or so. So it should be same.
Looks to me his car "started" not starting up. So he should of checked for Fuel spark first.

ok so he has fuel. what about good fuel pressure.

yeah. when i get the new tensionr, im going to take of the chain, and put it back on to spec. it doesnt look like it skipped a tooth though.
and i do have spark, and fuel.
how will i check if i have good fuel pressure?

my uncle said that this thing is off spec.
so im wondering where is it supposed to be when the engine is at Top dead center?

It's possible you stripped it. The idler sprocket bolt has to be torqued down. (48 - 61 lb/ft)
Here you go. CHECK PAGE 16! (http://www.vosko.net/media/fsm/EM.pdf)

hopefully your crank pulley didn't spin on you. also, is the distributor clocked right?

How is it at TDC when NONE of the darker chain links are linedu p with the spots on ALL the corresponding components with punch marks?
Now be honest,
Did you do anything with the motor before this happened?

It will not line up, and it will probably never line up until after (enter astronomical number) of spins. OP listen to importdude, it's possible your timing chain was never the culprit to begin with.

ok. i havent messed with the engine at all. i changed the oil and spark plugs like 500 miles before this happened.
anyways, my new tensior is supposed to be here on monday, (tommorow) and ill start putting it all together again. hopefully that will be it.

just do this
TDC #1 cylinder
Reset/reline the marks on the Upper chain
Then put it back
ALSO MAKE SURE WHEN U STAB THE DIS THAT ITS LINE UP CORRECT
its easy to miss the gear and roll over 1-2 links cuasing u not to start
line the dot with the marking on the end of the Dis gear.
After that check Fuel and Spark
If you do not know how to check for fuel and spark bring it to a mechicanic please dont bring it to your uncle, he does not sound like he knows whats hes doing

so WTF? i put it all together, adjust the dizzy, start the car. drove it for like 7 miles, turned the car off, and now it doesnt want to start again. sounds like ill have to adjust the dizzy again, but why?
importdude
09-16-2009, 03:32 AM
you did something wrong....
did u time the car after u installed the dis?
set timing to 15 if s13 and 20 for s14
between there is fine either or s13 or s14
check for spark with a spark tester. (i do not want to tell u to do it with a screwdriver b/c it seems like u might shock yourself lol)
check for fuel pressure via guage
check for fuel injectors/cylinders

ok, so the problem is that the middle thingy, where the crank chain, and the camshaft chain, that pulley, its loose, so i think that it causes the dizzy to skip a tooth everytime you drive it for a while.
