Is there seriously something wrong with torquing spark plugs? It's like torquing wheel nuts, sure you can tighten it well and be sure that they won't fall off but some people torque them anyways..

It's NOTHING like torquing wheelnuts. There is absolutely no reprocussion if you torque a spark plug down a little too tight. In all my years as a mechanic I have never torqued a single spark plug and I have never had a single problem in all those thousands of plugs. The ONLY reason to torque a plug is if you are indexing your plugs.

Thanks guys i torqued them to 21 ft/lbs like i thought. I am just very cautious and like to do stuff by the book.

Yeah, sure nothing has ever happened to you.. I have experienced both cases in which a spark plug was tightened too tight by a "mechanic" and another where the wheel flew off the car because it was torqued to tight by an idiot (who jumps on the cross wrench to tighten lug nuts:squint:).. My point is, there is no reason to criticize someone for doing something the right way..

(it's scary as hell when you are on the highway and the spark plug flies out and the engine starts smoking while making loud bang bang noises..)

I have overtightened the spark plug once and then later tried to change them out stripped it (not very hard on an aluminum head). Its not cheap or easy to fix when this happens.
