My S14 SR20 head needs to be welded to get the "pitting" out of it and he already decked it to 0.007". After it is welded and decked again it will be to approx 0.010". Max limit according to the FSM is 0.008". I am not decking the block.

Is it safe for me to put this head back onto the motor? My brother is worried that the valves will hit the pistons and then I'll have to do all this over again. I personally think it should be fine. Anyone else deck beyond the limits?

Here is how the head looks right now.

Seriously, you are better off buying a new head and redoing it. If you get a thinner metal head gasket, you are getting minimal piston to valve clearance. And I don't know how much he is charging you to weld the head and redeck but I bet its expensive. I wouldn't do it. Seems like a old school way of doing it. Sr heads can be bought pretty cheap these days.

I have a s14 head for sale if you are interested. I'll sell it pretty cheap since I just want to get it out of my apartment. PM me with what you want and I can give you a price. Shipping to canada is going to suck though.

There is one thing that you need to be aware of and thats is your playing with fire my friend. Theres a max for a reason and anything beyond that and your playing in uncharted water at your own risk. and your bound to have problems. ie you bolts to long and bottoming out you water jacket in the head getting too thin and cracking Your piston hitting the valves. If it were me i would say fuck it and get a new head cause what if you go thought all the money for him to weld it and machine it again and then you break a valve or take a chunk out of you piston the first time you fire it up. oh ya i know whats gonna happen you gonna have to do it all over again. and do what you should have done in the first place and replace the head. you can do what you want thats just my thought. oh and one other thing for thought a thicker head gasket can help but now you made the combustion chamber much samller so now your putting the same amount of air/fuel in the same area increasing your compression ration so thats something else you must consider. i dont think the head gaskets gonna be enough.

Exactly get a thicker head gasket.

I dont even know why you are considering buying an entire new head just because you already bought a 40 dolllar stock Head Gasket.

Throw that thing out and go get a 1.2 MM APEX-I Head Gasket with 87 MM bore. Use some heavy duty head studs torqued to 80ft lbs and you are good.

Make SURE to use a HG that is metal and has a FIRE RING, the only ones that currently offer this design to my knowledge are, Apexi, Power Enterprises and Maxworx which I think you have to call and request specifically and ask about fire ring.

Just get the Apexi its the most legit design and is reusable up to 3-4 times if you re-spray with Copper Gasket sealant.
