View Full Version : which engine to swap?
Black 97SE

I drive a 97, and my dad's willing to pay a for me to get something for my car. I was originally going to get a bodykit and exhaust, but I'm re thinking that. My brother doesn't want me to get a body kit due to the fact that I'll have to worry about my car a lot. And especially about dips and bumps etc. So I suggested performance parts, like a turbo. If greddy had their stupid turbo kit out I'd get that for sure, but they don't. What engines are good to swap in? I know about the sr20det, but what else? The rb25? How much would these engines cost me total to install?

hey dousan, i'm guessing that those swaps are also in order of difficulty, with the rb26 being the hardest and the sr20 being the easier of the 3. correct?

I didn't think the 240 engine bay is big enough to fit a RB26.

yes it has been done, numerous times. i've got pics. somewhere in some mags...
:)
yeah Bliss, RB26is hardest, SR easiest (and cheapest next to another KA)

I would go with the 1.0 Liter 55hp 3 cylinder beast out of a Geo Metro. You would get all sorts of originality points and it is super light and cheap, so you can make a badass suspension and have a great handleing car:p

RB26 fits in S14 but i don't think it would fit in an S13
Put the VH in an turbo it!! i am sure it would be both inexpensive and relaible not to mention easy to install:rolleyes:

you know that F max makes a kit, if you dont want that you can piece together your own turbo

:D Swap in an LS1, add Incon Twin Turbos, heads, cam and youre good to roll:D
Go with a SR20Det, you can probably find one for $2-3k from an S13. Some places get a bit pricey but Ill bet if you spend time and search youll come across a really good deal on one. Besides, as long as you dont have over 60k or so miles, just slap on a Super/Turbo charger on it:)

^^^^ who let the f- body in :p
if we are talking about real world logistics here, a turbo would probably be more of a headache than scratching a bumper on a few potholes
just get some basics for the KA, then when the engine gets old swap it out
or just turbo your ka

Uhh, i dunnow bout others, but i would never in my righteous mind cut up the body of a $10K car. So i'd rather stick to the SR/KA-T version, and choose from there based on your level of JDMness.

from all the searching i did. the average sr20det out of an s13 normally runs around 2300-2800. And if you cant do the swap yourself all the shops I call say around 1500-1800 for the install including all the hoses, belts and fluids. But thats a stock install. most people say you should upgrade the stock radiator to be on the safe side. but then again as long as your engines still in good condition id say turbo it. i dont have that choice i blew mine up. i think another good investment is an lsd. I was racing a v6 firebird, (they're slow) and ended up with my head lights pointed straight at him for a good 50ft, and no i wasnt behind him, i was beside him with my car side ways. funny thing was i was still keeping up with him

Since you are a beginnner, I would do the SR20DET, manly its cheap labor to install or not as hard to install youself than the RB25DET, Ive heard many stories on installing that engine...your best bet is SR20DET, but if you are a money spending whore, and have a **** load of money, go with the RB25DET

RB25DET: LEG
RB26DETT: FIRST BORN

how much money do you have to spend?

They all will fit. It just matters on what you want you want in the end and how much you want to pay up front. Hell if you got the money be the first to put the Viper motor in. You would be the first.:D Well anyway as far as the Rb26 in a S13 or S14 the easiest way is to use the 25 tranny and switch it to a single turbo setup and it fit as well as my RB25. Just start with a little more power. You could do it the cheap way or get some of the various install kits. Like I said choose the motor that will achieve you goals in the end and that will fit the budget you set. Oh and there are pisc in my sig if you want to look. Should look similar when done to a s14.

someone in the US swapped a stock RB26DETT into a LHD USDM S13 chassis. And it fit. Steering shaft does not hit the turbos.

Chassis designation was never mentioned in your posts dousan
another note I would be blind not deaf
words on a screen are visual and not audiable;)

chassis designation HMM let's see his original question mr. smarty pants:
I drive a 97
What engines are good to swap in?
which i replied he could do RB, SR or KA
then a reply after mine:
I didn't think the 240 engine bay is big enough to fit a RB26.
to what both AKA and i said, yes it can be done.
then, you replied after a few other replies
RB26 fits in S14 but i don't think it would fit in an S13
now, we were NEVER talking about s13 chassis until you brought it up at this time (original question if you remember, was about s14 chassis)
so i replied (again)
i just said its been done. i've seen pics, i have pics, and it works
its a very tight fit but it works
now rememer i said it had been DONE because the original comment was "I didn't think the 240 engine bay is big enough to fit a RB26."
and since 240sx is NOT a chassis but rather a model, then my reply to you of which i said, " i just said its been done" was relevant because that means it fits in BOTH s13 and s14 chassis fine.
make sense?
either way you were wrong, it fits in both s13 and s14 chassis, so i dont know what your deal is.
blind/deaf yes i know, i typed it as i would say it to you.

An sr20 depending on where you buy it will be about $2000-$3000. An rb25 is going to cost a little more, prolly between $3000-$5000. An sr20 would be a little cheaper do to the fact that is a direct drop in. You can get away with using the stock mounts, so labor won't that bad. An rb25 will run ya due to the fact your prolly gunna have to modify.
