Hey guys installed an autometer AFR guage today and I'm not sure if its working correctly. I hooked everything up as the directions showed but nwhen i step on the gas i don't see a reading. The only time i see a reading is when i let off the gas. I'll drive my car and when im shifting thats when i see the reading. When i step on the gas it goes all the way into the red (lean) and the lights go out until i let off the gas. If anyone has any insight on this please let me know.
Buddy of mine says to get a new o2 sensor.
Thanks.
It's an s14 SR.

WIdeband or Narrowband, New or used? Have you verified that the gauge and 02 sensor work? Does it pass basic diagnostic test? For narrowband which wire did you tap and where? And does your o2 sensor work correctly? Have multimeter will travel...? Meaning the multimeter, will allow you to view the voltage the ecu receives from the 02 sensor, just as the NB AFR gauge. If you make the connections and the gauge still doesn't work It might be faulty.

I'm pretty sure its a narrowband, and it's brand new. The gauge does work but im not sure if my o2 sensor works or not nor do i know if its toast. My check engine light doesn't come on. Wouldnt it usually be on if the o2 sensor were toast? I tapped into the signal wire coming from the ECU to the o2 sensor which i was told was the white wire. I tapped into it right above where the connector is that connects the wire harness to the o2 sensor. The gauge lights up and what not, but only when i let off the gas as stated above.

you just bought an expensive strobe light.
an AFR meter won't do much on a narrowband gauge.
if you want accurate AFR readings, you need a wideband.

Wow, talk about a smartass answer.
clark is right, a narrowband signal is pointless to measure. You wasted your money on a little flash once in a while.

Your wiring is probably the problem, make the connections as close as possible to the ecu. Get your multimeter, continuity check on the signal wire from 02 sensor plug(BP) with either pin29 or pin19 on ecu. Those are the 02 signal pins I've come across for s14SR's. Find the signal wire, then tap. Does it drive you crazy yet?
Do you have a multimeter? The ecu would throw a cell if it was obd2, but otherwise might just store a fault code. Is the check engine light even wired up...!? Wire it up, while your down there. Check ecu for codes, before you start.
