I mean i'm sure we all know their customer service is prolly on the top 10 of Worst ever.

But has anyone had major problems with the companies turbos.

Story:

My mom got PE Twin turbo kit put on here car about 2 years ago. It was a used kit that we picked up off her buddy. The previous car was a track only car, so granted the turbos were beat to fuck. Well shortly after the car got running (Nov-oct 2007), prolly about 6-7 months (last summer) they turbos were showing signs of worthless-ness, major leaking and all that jazz. So the shop decided that the one was still okay, but the pass side need to be replace. So brand new PE1420 was ordered installed, and got the car retuned. Well another yea goes by, and as of Apr 2009 my mom's motor was blown due to oil blow by, that was bad enough that it seeped into the intake plenum.

So a built motor out of a friends car was sourced and installed. During this down time it was concluded that now the driver side turbo was 100% shot, go figure it was only a matter of time. So a brand new turbo was ordered again.

Monday the car was finally 100% back together and running, tuned on tuesday, and made 405whp @ 8psi. Pretty low safe number. Well today (Fri) my mom was scheduled to come pick up the car, txt the shop owner to let him know she was coming. And the shit begins to roll. They had started the car up earlier that morning to find it smoking. So they take off some piping and find oil galling in the pipes. WTF. At 1st it was thought that it was just 1 turbo, but it turns out both turbos are leaking. One is BRAND NEW 0 driven miles, 2-3 dyno pulls on it. the other turbo only has 1500 miles and 2 dyno sessions.

Summary:
- In 1 year 2 brand new turbos have been put on her car. And are both already shot.
- 1 is completely Brand New, the other only has 1500 miles on it.

Has any one ever had this much trouble with Power Enterprise?

Hopefully she will receive a full refund for both turbos...

PE doesn't make all of their own CHRA's (they might not make any), I know the Evo guys talk about them a lot more than we do. It sounds like an over-oiling problem to me ~ what motor, what size restrictors? I assume the oil drainage is clear and the level in the pan is lower than the turbos?

- Cosworth Tri-Metal race bearings
- Power Enterprise head gaskets

- aftermarket down pipes w/ heat wrap
- stock heads

as far as how the drain set up is, i don't know i haven't seen the car since Jan. So i don't know if they changed anything with this new motor.

my 1st thought was the one turbo's drain tube was clogged, but when she called and told me that now both sides are smoking, i couldn't figure out what then. It would be alot easier if i wasn't 1200 miles away from her and the shop.

there has to be a simple solution to this, but at the rate of failure i keep seeing out of these turbos, i'd rather see her get her money back and buy some gt28rs.

I agree with gsxrjjordan, sounds like a possible oiling problem. Garrett BB turbos are notorious for blowing out oil seals from too much oil pressure. I'm not too familiar with IHI turbos, but if they're BB then would require a restrictor as well. Also if the PETT for the Z is anything like the greddy kit, then the oil drains are at the bottom of the pan. This causes the oil returns to stay filled with oil, which might back up the oil in the turbo. This is what I suspect happened to a recent TTed Z i worked on. You might want to hit up the Z forums, they might have some experience with the PE kit

yea i just haven't gotten around to posting it up on my350z yet...

that's really the only thing i can think of is the oil drains have to much in them. It can't be overflowing the restrictors that came with the kit, unless PE just sucks that much. Maybe they are restrictors for PE1820..

I'd have to agree with the consensus here. It really sounds like an over-oiling issue. There's really no other explanation than that. Did the shop even install the restrictors? I know they may be trustyworthy or what not, but shit does happen.

Definitely a design flaw. Wish I had a picture to show. An old friend of mine about a year ago had a PE1420 on his Evo. Apparently it cracked after just four months of use (not sue where). He had it replaced for free. Not sure how its held up with the new one.

Hey man
i use PE1420 turbos allot on customers cars here
for people who are chasing power but dont want more lag....
however
they are strong from my experiance and most my customers drift and get them red hot ( HIGH EGT) every single day

However im thinking your setup might be differnt so im not sure

power enterprise has bad customer feedback in japan they never do refunds or returns

for example a friend of mine whos in D1 GP used to race his AE86 in it and used there Power enterprise timing chain belts, he kept busting bearings on it.. and couldnt figure out why
he got another belt (OEM toyota) and rebuilt his engine for the 4th time but the OEM belt went back on and never had a problem
he realised the belt would change tension too much and cause bearing stress/fatigue

so he rings PE and what do they say to him???

" OHhh thats our belt style, Im sorry, we cannot refund... you should know this"

pffft..

So good luck man.. From my experiance the IHI turbos are good.. just monitor oil pressure, oil type and check your feed and drain!
