when racing, is it better to have the overdrive off at first and then put it in when going? I've lost some of my low-end power from my exhaust, but my stillen intake kicks ass. also, my car shifts really hard from 1st to 2nd sometimes. can i adjust that? thanx

For the hard shifting, check your tranny fluids.  If thats not it, check the actuator.  On the inner engine bay, on the driver's side, there will be a pair of wires running down the 1/4 panel.  Somewhere on top, you will see a holder with a connector.  If that's not connected, the car will shift REALLY hard.
And for the manual shifting of the tranny... leave it up to the ecm.  I made a few runs with a gtech pro performance meter, and I was about .2 seconds slower shifting myself.  And in a quarter mile, with a s14, you don't even get to overdrive.  Third gear will take you to 110-ish.  The stock run in a quarter is 85-88 mph-ish.

oh so that's where it is, you said behind the battery or something before. now I know where it is. mine isn't disconnected, but I'll try and see how it is.

mine also shifts hard from 1st to 2nd, and since it's not the actuator, I'll check the tranny fluid.

btw, doesn't the actuator say Unisia or something?

Yeah, it says Unisia Jecs. I took it off, and it's not that hard, I like how it feels. It feels like (and sounds like) I'm speedshifting a 5speed.

What would the effect of leaving it off do to the tranny?

a hard 1-2 shift is pretty common form my experience and it actually isnt a bad thing most of the time. A jerky shift puts less stress than a extremely smooth shift.. well thats the experience from other Nissans. A valve body mod that improves auto shifting performance makes the shifts alot harsher, but actually extends the life of the tranny

oh yea the only thing OD does is lock out 4th gear, so it really shouldnt make a difference for most racing
