View Full Version : Car foam in door panels

Hey guys ive seen a number of people using foam in a can and spraying in between door panels and in any areas that have a hole. I've looked to see if it really helps at all but it seems that it is only good for sound deadening. If it is only good for deadening sound would it be better to spray the whole trunk area with rubber undercoating. Does the foam get heavy and what is the best kind to use. thanks guys

Sound deadening and insulation and weight adder. Why would you want to do it? what are you tryin to do?

you don't use regular insulation foam. you actually use stuff that is 10x denser or so that can actually make your chassis more rigid if you use it properly. they did it in sport compact car not too long ago

Oh ok, ive never heard about that stuff in door panels, ive heard of it in frame rails though..

I would do it to make the inside of the car quiter. I dont really need to worry about adding weight because i have enough power to the rear but i didnt know how to go about it. So people only do it in frame rails not door panels or any other places. I know it is messy but i dont know what kind to use. ii've looked but not seen anything proper to use

i use foam to fill up holes that water leaks into my car. it seals water from leaking in. this is the only thing i use it for. other than that i have no other use for it
and one thing wooooooooooooooooow weight adder dont make me laugh when it weighs next to nothing. LOL

hahaha right. i figure foam didnt weigh much
I remember reading it could cause rust.. wouldn't risk it
get some sound deadening material.

If you're just looking for a sound deadening solution, you might try this.

does the foam actually prevent water in the hole/leakage? i would think it eventually would get worst.

They did the foam on an alfa car a while back and it ended up rusting to peices.
That foam will do nothing.

That auto foam sounds sweet but they're all the way in malaysia. but does anybody else know if it causes rust because i have heard people say it prevents rust. does it depend on the foam

Depends on the foam bro. The stuff that Thatguy linked is legit.
You just can't use GreatStuff or whatever because it will hold water and cause your car to rust. The legit stuff fills the cavity and stiffens your chassis.
If you're looking for sound deadening, take the stock stuff out and Dynamat the whole thing.

i looked at the stuff that Thatguy posted but theyre located in malaysia so there is no way to do it

So i think that i settled on Using Handi foam. it gets pretty stiff and u can still shave it when it comes out the OEM holes. After that i will use this stuf called quiet car. It is a spray almost like truck bed liner that you use to spray over everything like the trunk and panels. My car will be super quiet and stiff. I could then overkill it with stich welding

You're better off installing sound deadening mats if you are trying to quiet cabin noise. Basically like dynamat stuff. I think its more effective, looks better and doesn't depreciate your car. If you spray that foam stuff in your car, I doubt anyone would buy it. Its almost impossible to get it out once you spray it in.
Since I believe there is already sound deadening material under the carpet, I would install in the door panels, behind the rear quarter panels, trunk, and maybe even the transmission tunnel. There is not much room but I would also try to get some on the firewall.

Yea i prob would never use that foam. Iv seen ppl use it and it looks ugly. But if it could cause rust keep it away from your car.

i highly doubt either option would do anything whatsoever to resale value.
i'm lining the entire floor, door skins, sides, firewall, and roof with Fat Mat. it won't turn the s13 into a rolls but it'll definitely help with drivability.

I've tried all the realms of sound deadening so here's my 2 cents:
My entire car is sprayed with Line-X bedliner. Before application I went through and taped over all the exposed holes, there's a million of them, from both sides (where I could access both). They laid down a layer from the footwells all the way to the taillights, the entire floorpan, rocker panels, transmission tunnel, up the quarters to the base of the windows, Inside the quarters, the entire rear deck top and bottom, and every inch of the trunk. It was a major undertaking but it looks amazing. I put extra bolts in the holes I wanted to save, they came right out afterward leaving it perfect.
Foam - The nicer chassis foam works great in most areas, but anything in the rocker panel will corrode. That's where all your water drains out on sunroof cars, it has to left open. The roof pillars can be filled though, along with the roof frame, the kick panels, and other dead areas that are higher up. A lot of newer cars are like that OE.
The best thing I've found though is to go to an upholstery supplier and buy a roll of jute carpet underpadding, it's the same stuff on the back of the OE carpet. Cut it into small pieces, wad it up, then stuff it into cavities, the rear quarters are perfect for this. My quarters sound like a rock when you hit them on the outside. You can then layer pieces behind all your panels, seats, trim, etc. Even the backs of the door panels, just glue it on. Using foam on a door panel would work only if you could 'build' it up like a clay model, sculpting it to fit the contour of the panel and then the door, but just layering or spraying in the door will interfere with the window and other moving parts. A few coats of undercoating inside the door can't hurt, get the outer shell heavily and you'll see a change in noise.

Well i am not doing it for looks. and secondly you wont see it after my panels are put back. I am doing it to stiffen up the chassis but the sound deadening is just a bonus. And i seriously doubt that is going to depreciate the cars value. Its not like im going to sell it to a family with kids or anything.

i read about foam a few times lately, sounds interestnig to say the least. if you do it let us know how you like it. id like to do it for sound deadening. i dont track my car:P
ixfxi said dynamat was a pain in the ass to remove if needed, he wasent pleased. neither were alot of the people that posted in his thread. so i guess ill stay away from that. foam sounds cool tho

why would you ever remove it? it's not meant to be put in and taken out, it's a one time application. and it's not going to magically silence your car, but it'll absorb vibration, and that's a good start.
not to mention, it's literally IMPOSSIBLE to remove foam. so whatever point you're making here is completely lost on me.

Interesting, yea im sure the cars value will not depreciate unless like I said and others if it happens to cause rust. And can u really stiffen a chassis by putting this foam in a door??

if it's done improperly and causes rust, yes, that would depreciate the value of the car. but more importantly, it would ruin the car for the current owner. who would knowingly rust out their car? nobody.
you know what else would depreciate the value of your car? crashing it into a tree.

I'd like to know how this goes, what foam are you using, HandyFoam, AutoFoam etc ?
What density etc, cost ?
