how much did u pay for Ur timing chain?

its about time for me to get a new timing chain and wow they are asking $750 for timing chain...

i was wondering how much did u pay for urs?

and is s13 chain will fit on s14?

gimme ur price and year of ur car.

Why would you want to replace your timing chain?

Ah so it's rattling. Is that because it's rubbing a guide? Are the tensioners working properly? Are the oil passages to the tensioners colgged? These are all things you might want to find out before spending $750.

Time to get it replaced? So all the people with 160k+ miles on the stock chain must be morons.

i paid about $350 for EVERYTHING... there is a revised timign chain kit with new guides, chain, etc. incuding new waterpump, tstat and liquid gasket stuff. also while you're messing around in there you might want to check out the cam sprockets... mine were totally shot, if you don't see any wear and tear on them you probably dont have to replace them, but you'll KNOW what i mean when i say "shot." i do not think the s13 kit works with the s14. check out courtesy nissan, they have a pretty good kit you can follow, although their part numbers are totally wrong, it's a good reference. also... beware of hidden bolts when taking the fron cover off. good luck, hope this helps a bit.

Those things aren't easy to check but they are what you would want a mechanic to check before replacing the chain. The timing chain isn't a replacement item. Unless it get's stretched out to the point it can't tensioned any more, there's no reason to replace it.

You would want a mechanic to remove any unneccessary guides per Nissan TSB's and see if that solves the problem. Next make sure the tensioners are working properly.

Sorry for being harsh before, but I don't want to perpetuate the myth that timing chains need to be replaced when in most cases they do not. Espeically on DOHC's.

in some cases (like mine) the timing chain wears through the old guides and does loosen up quite a bit... in this case the rattling people hear is actually the timing chain hitting the water pump housing. in my case the chain wore a hole through the pump housing and definitely took some abuse itself. just a thought ;) everytime somebody talks about the infamous timing chain rattle doesnt mean its JUST the guides.

'95 DOHC... the design changed a couple times from 95-98 i believe, im not 100% on the years though.

Hmm, well i've heard of it happing mostly with SOHC's, very few DOHC's, but yeah it is possible to have a bad chian itself.

drugie- Have you taken off the 2 chain guides from the upper timing chain? You might want to remove them because that was the problem with the noise on my 95 KA, same color as yours by the way:D . If you take off the valve cover you will see one of the two chain guides for the upper chain. To take off the other chain guide from the upper chain you're going to have to put some more work into it. It involves taking off the distributor and top front cover.
