View Full Version : Just Welded My Differential **PICS**

We had an extra open Differential sitting around, so we tried to weld it. This was our first attempt at this. We decided to weld a steel rod in the gears on both sides. Looks pretty rough, but do you guys think it will hold up? and not break?

Try it but to me it seems like no penetration did u heat up the diff first at least?

lol. As long as you know, then we won't make fun. Just like godrift said... penetration?? I can't really tell. The gears in there need to be really hot.

Edit: Damn it kidd... you beat me, lol

you need to pull the gear assembly out of the housing and clean the shit out of it before you try to lay a bead on it, it looks like you just drained it and started welding, from what i can see it didn't burn in at all, another problem with welding it in the housing is that all the buckshot and slag that came off while you were welding will be floating around in you're diff and possibly get into the bearings or chew up the main gear or even seize it up, i wouldn't even try to drive on that thing, i'd get another and start over save urself the headache of it breaking and leaving you stranded, not trying to be a dick or anything just speaking from experiance, i've done 5 of them all of which including my own have been tracked several times and all of them are still in perfect working order

i know it looks like shit. I just want it to hold up. I myself did not weld it. My Uncle did. He said there was little surface to weld on or something. and plus the arc kept jumping around. We drained it. and cleaned it out with brake cleaner. then stuffed it with rags and taped up the main gear so no slag crap would stick to that. I'm going to take a magnet and try to clean up the chunks inside the housing. I have never taken the gear assembly out. I was afraid of not getting it back in. Right now the gears rotate freely. ehhh.... whats the worst that could happen? broken drive shaft, transmission, axles, dead chiuaua on the side of the road. Me losing control and sliding through a park killing a family.

Did you use a fucking flux core weld on that shit? Major slag bro, major slag. Your going to have to get in there with a dremel die grinder and a wire wheel and really clean that shit up.

That bolt thing was completely unnecessary, I would actually be scared to drive on the track with something like that. You could of done a 12 point bead weld. Or do what I do with high HP rigs and bead weld every spider gear tooth.

Haha yeah that's probably the worst that could happen.

Here's a picture of a PBM welded

yeah i saw that. What kind of welder did they use? We used a Mig. But we had no Argon Gas.

there lies the problem bro, should have shielded it. too much crap around the area. clean it a bit and try it out.

omg well theres the problem my friend, that shit will break instantly, if you didn't use any shielding gas there are so many impurities in that weld i'm amazed you were able to lay anything in there, get some argon and a new open diff, take it apart clean it and weld it, its not hard at all if you need any help PM me

I just stuffed mine with nuts and bolts and some rocks and then wrapped the carrier several times with duct tape. BE SURE TO REMOVE THE CARRIER AND RING GEAR SO YOU CAN GET THE DUCT TAPE ON PROPERLY!

Im really just kidding. You can get away with much smaller welds if you just do it properly. I would get a drain plug from a vlsd as well with a welded as it will catch junk on it.

I would not drive it on the street. It is one thing if it lets go at a parking lot event, but if it explodes on the freeway that is different.
I have done a few...I plate them like the PBM. It gives it allot more to weld to. Also if you did not heat the gears to at least 500 degrees the gears will more than likely crack.

You trashed that one:rl:...I wouldn't trust it.

A side note, you don't use 100% Argon for steel welding. I would recommend C25 or a C02 mix.

So What will happen if it breaks free? just explode the differential and fly off the car?

08-28-2009, 02:22 PM
it will lock and mannnn, are you going to shit your pants! errrrrrrrkkkk......crashhhhh.

your uncle needs a little more practice welding

!Zar!
08-28-2009, 03:28 PM
That looks horrid.

If one of those chunks falls out and gets stuck between your ring and pinion, it could lock your rear end up and either leave you stranded or stuck spinning out because your rear locks up.

this isn't a i'll prove them wrong case...its a you got it welded very wrong and could be seriously hurt if you drive with it.

It will lock up...now if you are doing 25mph in a neighborhood, it might just scare the shit outta you. If you are rolling 75 on the freeway things could be much worse.
You asked for our opinion...nobody here is bagging just to be rude, we are trying to help you, and keep you from getting hurt or hurting someone else.
How would your uncle feel if you or somone else got hurt while using the diff he welded?

I'm glad someone mentioned this... everyone recommends 75/25 argon/c02 for welding steel. Leave the pure argon to the TIG welding of Alum or whatever.

Exactly ~ on the freeway, it'll EXPLODE, leaving debris flying down in a close proximity to your vehicle @ 70mph, possibly into people's windshields, etc.

And if you hurt someone, and they happen to research you enough and come across this thread your totally screwed in court.

you should grind all that shit off and grind/clean the gears. And get some argon for your mig welder. And Weld the shit out of it. or just buy a differential instead of putting peoples lives on the line because those welds i wouldn't trust....

singlecamslam
08-29-2009, 10:27 PM
That diff is too far gone i think. Throw it away and call it a learning experience. Please use a gas welder next time. not 110 either.

A friend of mine did that to his camaro. Rest in peace Zach Little. Car locked up and went sideways and then rolled over. He wasn't wearing a seat belt and they found him in a tree with his neck broke. He was 19 and that was 16 years ago. Rex
