View Full Version : Cracking of paint due to fender pull

The first time i ever pulled/rolled fenders was on my car. On my passenger side rear fender, I did not use the heat gun as much as I should, therefore I hard slight paint cracks on the lip. My stupid neglect led to this in a few months:
(I threw my stockers on, because I was balancing my other wheels)

What can I do to slow down the inevitable death? The ultimate answer is cut and weld, but I don't have the tools/skill to do such, and I will resort to that if it gets much, much worse.

I also have the stupid pressure dent caused by pulling, I inflated a basketball in there to pop it out. It slightly reduced the dent, but it is still there. Has anyone tried to heat the surface then cool it rapidly to contract the metal back out??

Cheers

The Heating-InstaFreeze works, but it really just depends how you do it.

Surface rust, sand, primer, repaint.

You should've used a HEATGUN and did it the RIGHT WAY.

Cutting corners = fail.

You should have done it RIGHT and used a HEATGUN.

Cutting corners > you.

Its Surface rust, sand, primer, repaint.

yes do NOT cut and weld anything near there.

Sand it down to shiny metal
spray some self etching primer on there
and kiss it with some touch up paint.

It will look fine and no longer rust.

Lol @ what he "should" or "shouldn't have done".... duh. He's asking what he can do to prevent further paint cracking, etc. Wow, no wonder you're in time out..

There's not much you can do at this point but re-paint the fenders. Not sure how that's not obvious.

Thanks for the advice

For the record, I did use a heat gun, just not enough.

My driver side is pulled fine with no cracks. I did the passenger side first, got some cracks, cried a little bit, then did a better job on my drivers side, lol.

godrifttoday: what's this special bare metal adhesive you are speaking of?

you need to do more than sand, prime and repaint. you can sand off all visible rust but it will bubble up under the paint again in a year or so, especially if you're in BC.

you need to seal it with some kind of anti-rust coating like por-15 after sanding and before paint.
