Hey everyone, I just came back to the states from Iraq yesterday and the one of first things I worried about is my car. I bought the car in 1992 and it's my first car I ever had. It is a 1992 nissan 240 sx. I need the car to start going to work soon.
I came back and tried to start it but it didn't start. I got a new battery and that didn't work either. Before I was deployed, it ran great and nothing wrong. I come back and the battery was low so I changed it, and it cranks over but does not start. I left in Feb. 2006, so it sat for a few years. Oh, it is a 5 speed hatch, super hickas model a top of the line when I got her.
Any suggestions?

the fuel sounds like it needs to be replaced, it absorbs moisture.
does the fuel pump turn on?
you will need to replace all the fluids soon after it starts, oil etc.

Yeah, the fuel will most definitely need to be replaced.... Try that and see what it does.

My money is on bad fuel. It's probably varnish by now. Drain the tank and drain the lines coming into the engine at the fuel filter too.

Bad gas and probably now, fouled plugs
Also check all the ignition terminals for rust...you might have some corrosion where the spark plug wires meet the plugs etc.
I woudl also run some lucas fuel system cleaner through it

Rings might be stuck pour about a teaspoon of oil in each cylinder,
But yeah gas is definalty bad,
Check the ECU for codes also
On a side note
Welcome back to the states

Glad you made it back safely.

Just checked a lot of things.
I changed the oil today and cranked it over with a ratchet. It was fine. The oil is new and the pistons are free moving.
I believe it may be spark. I've taken out the spark plugs right now and they look good as well as checked for spark by grounding each wire to the chassis and they all have spark.
The fuel purges and I can smell it.
I think that the timing is off? but makes no sense because it ran fine before. Maybe I'll syphon out the old fuel and see if that is the problem.

It's been 3 1/2 years, if what you said is true. The fuel is bad. Drain it all out, fill it back up, and replace the spark plugs just in case. Fuel filter might need to be replaced as well, if only for good measure (it's cheap, why not?)

they are just maintenance items

Fuel can also form into varnish in the lines and filter clogging them in that amount of time.

Alright! I flushed out the gas, changed to a Z32 fuel filter, and did a whole tune up, it runs perfectly now. Idles around 760rpm. And got me 23 miles a gallon today!
Awesome car! Thanks for the help.!

Glad you got it running!!
Most fuel nowadays is crammed with so much ethanol it seems to make the fuel go bad much faster(although 3 years is too long for any fuel). It also clogs fuel lines, injectors, filters, carb jets, etc. if it is allowed to sit for periods of time.
I will not run fuel with ethanol in it in any of my motorcycles, or lawn equipment.

You're 31, and you bought the car new in 1992, which means... You bought a new car at the age of 14? You must've had one hell of a paper route! :D
Congrats on getting it running again.
