Yeah it certainly is.
I paid that 'Green Fee' $25 via Newegg recently for purchasing a computer monitor.
State is broke and probably desperate to swindle it's citizens any way they can.
Also had to pay close to $400 for 5 units at city college here.
The costs of living here aren't getting any cheaper.

Best Buy offers you to drop your old tv and electronics off for free or something.

But in return, they charge you for it when you buy a new tv.

Or something like that.

The fee goes to recycling.

Just looked at the invoice from my Newegg monitor purchase:

Electronic Waste Recycling Act15-34 $16.00

From Wiki;

The Electronic Waste Recycling Act of 2003 (2003 Cal ALS 526) (EWRA) is a California law to reduce the use of certain hazardous substances in certain electronic products sold in the state. The act was signed into law September 2003.

All CRT, LCD, and plasma display devices contained in televisions, computers, and other electronic equipment with a screen size over 4 inches (10 cm) measured diagonally are covered by the act. After January 1, 2007 these devices may not contain greater than the allowed concentrations of any of these four materials (by weight):

* cadmium : 0.01%
* hexavalent chromium : 0.1%
* lead : 0.1%
* mercury : 0.1%

The Act also requires retailers to collect an Electronic Waste Recycling Fee (effective January 1, 2005) from consumers who purchase covered devices.

Kinda presumptuous of the CA gov't to presume you must throw your old monitor away.
I still use my old monitor, and plan to do so until it's broken.

This reminds me of the time a gas station was only charging something like .36 cents instead of the $3.60 per gallon if you paid with a credit card. My sister works at a bank where a few, even the branch manager filled up after being told of the glitch. They were all fired a few days later.

now people are going to file a class action lawsuit and sue best buy because they won't honor their 10 dollar price tag. WTF people?? get a clue! smarten up for god's sake. no way in hell is a 52" tv going to cost you 10 bucks. never. ever. not even in 10000 years when a 1000" tv is standard.

"I'm going to call and be very angry," one commenter at Gizmodo said. "Is it really worth it to lose a customer? Maybe they will give it to me."
