I recently bought a 1992 fastback, the mileage is 175k.
Two problems:
1st.
Upon starting the car it starts to die little by little, in order for me to keep the car on i have to give it gas. i ususally rev it to 2k rpms for about 45 seconds - 1 minute, till its able to stay on. A couple of time the car has just died.
2nd.
I changed the oil because it was amazingly dirty, while the car was running i decided to pull out the dipstick. After removing the dipstick the engine started to die/bog. i also heard the sound of air escaping from i dont know where.
whatever feedback would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

you might have lots of vacuum leaks, also you would have to check your idle air valve and all that other air valves on the 240..

yea i would check all the little vacuum lines behind the head and around the manifold, throttle body, do you have a check engine light? since you just got it and judging be the oil being dirty i would change the air filter. fuel filter, plugs ect just to ween out the possibility's
... Just a few thoughts

If you have to warm the car up by revving it after startup to stay on, sounds like the idle control valve is not working properly. The one on my CA took a crap and I could not find another that worked properly to replace it with. I just had to suck it up in the mornings until the car warmed up. I fixed all of my vaccuum issues and still had cold start issues. Gotta love it.
You really just need to download the FSM and troublshoot in order as it specifies. You can't go wrong with it, if you follow what it says and no shortcuts. BTW, which engine?

do a compression test
Compression check is a good start, i would change the following while your at it:
-spark plug and wires
-cap and rotor
-fuel filter
-air filter
your problem could be the idle control valve .. or MAF but then it wouldn't even start like my old S13.

Bingo. roplusbee has one possible solution to your problem. Clean it out with some brake cleaner at least.

sweet...i wasnt the only one
if u wanna look for air leaks, just spray areas with brake cleaner, if u hear a change in idle, then ur near the spot wear air is excaping/sucked in
