View Full Version : Tell me what you think of the cut bumper

Due to solving reduced airflow into the engine bay I have been taking steps to help remedy it. This is what I have done

http://charles.sykikchimp.org/images/240cutbumper.jpg
edit: image was distorting forum

I plan to put some of the edging that goes on doors and maybe some mesh painted black or red (not to sure about that though) The reason why I am posting is to see if anyone has any killer ideas on how I can possibly make it look a little more....stock? or like it's supposed to be there.

Any hints or tips will be appreciated
TIA,
NR

Edit: All I did to the car for this was messured out the space that I wanted to cut to make sure it was even. Then take scotch tape and outline the area that was to be cut. Using a rotary tool I cut the section within the tape and then used the sanding bit to even out everything. All in all I don't think it turned out to bad kinda looks aftermarket

FYI I was going for the type-x look:D j/k

I think it looks very good! just get some touch up paint (aka nail polish) and snad those edges, and paint them up.

Your car is looking less and less sleeper everyday :( ;)

Just gotta get those dents pulled out, and that rear turn signal replaced. Some JDM turn signals would look sweet too. :)

Lol, I've been meaning to do that to my car for the longest time!

Go to homedepot and find some rubber side molding. If you outline the cutout with this stuff it'll look Pimp! Almost like the ab flug one they used to sell back in the day.

Also I think it'd look better as one big hole.

Use black mesh!

Edit: when do you find all this free time to work on your car:confused: lucky

I just got done cleaning up the edges and used some touch up paint to get the inside edges the same color.

As far as mesh goes, I love the look of the black mesh used on the new evo. Maybe if I go to the Mitsu dealer I can score some.

Jed-I just got motivated today after I got home from work. So I am out there w/ my rotary tool @ 0800 this morning and started to cut away. I kinda like the two holes insted of one big one (especially not having any kind of mesh behind it) I just figured if I don't like the two then I can always get rid of the center section but if I just went w/ one then my options are very limited

pignose envy! :p

I think with the edging and some wide mesh like the Evo has it'll look great!

And that's a modding super-freak to you!

Also can a mod reduce the size of the pics? Sorry for the massive pics

I did the same thing just put some black mesh behind it as it hides the rough edges. looks good though. will help you intercooler alot as well. And i thought I was the only one with the idea.

Unless this forum accepts HTML code, a mod can't do anything. If it does accept HTML, I can edit your posts for you (Someone tell me if Zilvia accepts HTML), if not, you'll need to go to paint, cut the image size in half, and re-upload the pics to whereever they are.

It was the scotch tape that I used as a guide. After I put the tape on and made sure it was straight I just followed the edge of it. Oh yeah go slow!;)

Halo- I just haven't put it back on yet. I still need to get to the shop so I can use their a. torch (I have no idea how to spell acetelyn?)

Bbandit-thanks for the compliment!:D

Ryan-I think there is another meet in MD coming up in May. I will be there

Charles-Thank you very much for the pic resizing. Now the 56k'ers can look at the pics in under an hour:p

Won't that support be right in the way of the vents you created?

That's the main reason why I wouldn't cut my bumper cover. ;) Still looks pretty nice though.

looks like that middle part is really fragile, is it?
if you could get a Zenki lip i would just cut it all off from the nose all the way down, leaving more air room for the intercooler and it would look better IMHO and if u still want the sleeper thing, the just get a mesh grill and paint it black or something.. either way. very nice =):p

That looks like it should help with your airflow, and it looks good too!

With the shade, the two holes you made look like the stock openings on the side.

BBSHT240
04-23-2003, 06:59 AM
AS for the steel reinforcement you can cut that as well if you didnt already. just cut 1 big square out the middle a little larger than the 2 you have. thats what i did.

The airflow differences are amazing! Underhood temps have droped dramatically also. Before I would open my hood after normal city driving and would barely be able to breathe due to the heat coming out of the engine bay. Today I popped the hood and could touch my radiator w/o getting a third degree burn. It was well worth the trouble and all-in-all would recommend this mod to any s13 owners with FMICs.

Finally my fans have cool air to pull through the radiator!;) So I don't have to watch my temp gauge start to creap up during city driving. Also at speed the car pulls harder due to increased air flow over the intercooler and overall cooler engine bay

Not bad, should have make the hole bigger...kinda have one big hole for your FMIC....yet cover it with mesh.

I wish I could have a FMIC.....let alone a SR.

Looking above, not only would I say you made the right choice with two holes, but you also did an AWESOME job on the straightness of your lines, especially compared to that guy.

I don't get it. How does that even apply?

I wanted the best of both worlds. I have seen one big slot in the bumper but:
1. They are never straight because they are so long
2. Looks out of place
3. I have seen one long slot and I wanted to be a little different
4. The half inch long bar in the middle won't affect airflow at all

Just and update-
I forgot to turn my fan on during my commute to work. Since I was running late the speed was a little higher than normal (i.e. tripple digits) the majority of the time. The car didn't even think of overheating. Which it would have if the slots weren't there. Honestly this is one of the better DIY mods I have done thus far

Boro240 wasresponding to Bliss's reply. Either way, yours is functional. Perfectly fine i guess... but you asked for opinions, and I gave you one. No need for rationalization (you can if you want, but i know why you did what you did), I just prefer a different style. Also, making one long cutout has nothing to do with being striaght imo. The dude in the pic above either didn't care b/c he just needed airflow, or he was inept at cutting. Here's what i would have done with yours:

http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid36/p3ebe66ef53fdd0f9f05cff7c800678a7/fd221e22.jpg

But like I said that is just my opinion, so tyake it as you will.

Thats it I'm doin it today!

LOL, I forgot to turn my fans on also today...remembered when I started to smell coolant.

I've got little plates of that naked chick you see on truckers mudflaps. If we could put those facing each other on my bumper that would be pimp!!

I agree, but how much more flow would you get taking out that 1" long piece?? If he wants to make it look a little different, why not do it? I HARDLY doubt that little piece would give him a signicantly greater amount of air.

If function>form as much you say, why not just make a humungus whole in the middle of the bumper instead of two little holes?
