I found a great deal on a 1990 240sx hatch in arizona for $900. The car is in good condition and has 145k on it.
q#1
If I buy it in az can smog it in ca, I think it might be only 49 state legal.
Q#2
If I buy it can I register and insure it in az and bring it to ca? I have a house in both states but stay in california and have a license from ca. Im just wondering what would happen if a cop pulls me over with a az car and a ca license:cops:I do have an az ID but not sure if it would help.
thanks for all your replys, please dont tell me to use the search as I already have.

is the car stock like engine wise to where it wouldnt pass california smog law? if it does, then, you should have no problems smogging it in california to be able to register it in cali.. now, if you have arizona plates, and still have arizona license, you okay as well. as long as you show the cop your arizona license.. but, i noticed you said you have an ID, idk if you meant license. coz, if you have arizona plates, you should have arizona license to match it.
idk how they would handle az plates wit ca license tho.

then seriously you run a chance of getting a ticket if you keep the AZ plates. Most of the time they will not look at you. Though if you do something worth being pulled over for and they see you have a CA address they will either warn you or right a ticket for having out of state plates.
The law states that you can only drive a out of state car without registering it for 10 days. As long as you have a California address its deemed you have been here for longer than 10 days. Remember it takes the DMV like 2 weeks to send you a license. Thats 4 days longer than 10 days.

Do you have proof of dual residence? Or are you renting out the house in AZ? That will come into question. The first time you get pulled over you can probably get off, but after that they'll definitely ticket you.
Also just don't do anything stupid while driving and you'll be fine.

Well somebody was bullshitting you. I've had my car in CA for 4 yrs with SR, active duty and kept my FL plates and license. CA couldnt touch me for shit...I had a cop write me a ticket for my exhaust and limo tint, got thrown out when the judge asked me if Im military.
Only thing that we have to go thru is that we have to "smog" our car and get a cert to get a base sticker. I went to some random smog place, told him I need a cert so I can get a base sticker, showed him my out of state registration and military ID and guy just printed me a cert.

That's because your military Ray, you guys do still get a few perks. Like stated above because they know you guys shifted around.
Regular citizens do not get the preferential treatment you stated above. In fact you guys can dodge lawsuits against you because you are in the military.

military personnel gets some exemption
but even when ur driving through another state, your car is suppose to be that state legal
so if u have an AZ/NV car with dark tint, and no front plate, and driving through CA, its technically not legal as well
