Hey guys, great site you all have here. I used to own a 99 firebird formula. I loved the car but for financial reasons I had to sell. I have been looking to buy a new "project car" and im hooked on building a s14. The firebird was very tail happy and making the cars backside catch up with the front was fun as hell. I am currently looking to buy a used 96-97 240sx. In Florida, there arent that many 240s and they all have high mileage. What do I need to look for when I buy the car???? What do I need to do to make the car drift? in the Firebird, all I needed to do was put my right foot to the floor and I was sideways. Im up for any suggestions towards my car. Thanks
hey i'm a moron!....just wanted to be the first to say it please search before you ask questions and dont ask stupid broad questions that no one could answer in one thread. and if you dont know what to look for when lookin for a car u dneed to learn alot before you start tryin to hook up a 240.

Jeez, calling him a moron was uncalled for.

High mileage really isnt an issue... the cars last a while...
damnit i cant be like the big boys that get to joke on the newbs my bad man but search please because i get kinda sick of reading posts(if you dont like them why read them? i know) of people makin overexaggerated plans about things they dont know sh1t(and arent tryin to learn) about and will never accomplish. just ranting. you get what im sayin like u didnt bother to do research so to me it doesnt seem like you want it that bad you expect us to hand it to you. meaning i dont think you deserve it you gotta work for it. im bein a dick tonight im in a bad mood so just excuse my mean comments. ok well i felt i made a point if anyone agrees. and his post was pretty ignorant in my opion, in that he said 96-97 240sc, showing he doesnt know his years yet! and he said how do you drift and what do i need to loof for when buyin a car.

WOW!!!!!!!! What does your thong taste like????? sounds like they are THAT FAR UP YOUR ASS!!! All I asked was help on making the car go sideways and What to look for when buying a car. Would you like me to break it down for you. Ill try to type it as simple as I can
1) Does the KA engina hold up when its high on miles.
2) How to setup my car to drift.
3) Any other tips for building my car
Does this sum it up or do I need to break it down more???

uhh... its a 240 not a porsche.
but anyways my next car will hopefully have an LS1 in it, i'm sure that formula was nice :)

1) Yep. mine has 140k. doesnt consume oil, passes emissions with flying colors. A well maintained KA will last.
2) Learn to drift stock first. then modify to go faster. when you don't have 300lb-ft of torque it requires finesse... which is actually easier to learn with a soft stock suspension.
3) Hang around, check out people's "show and tell" posts to get a feel for typical mods.

wow,...quite homosexual.
ok fine
1) Does the KA engina hold up when its high on miles.
yes some people have kas with over 200k mile mine has 150 and runs perfect.
2) How to setup my car to drift.
make your chassis stiff, steering stiff etc, make your rear suspension soft and your front a little harder( i thought differently until yesterday) get good grippy tires so you can gain traction before hitting anything
3) Any other tips for building my car
dont rice it out
My list of "things to do to drift like koguchi" goes something like this...
1) Driving skill. Learn your car! Not just the basics (lines, turn in, braking, shifting, h&t) but also WEIGHT TRANSFER. Knowing WEIGHT TRANSFER is the key!
2) BIG tune up! (bushings, Fuel filter, oil, oil filter, plugs, wires, etc etc)
3) buy and install LSD
4) Watch Drift Tengoku and option videos
5) Suspension (springs and shocks, or ideally, coilovers.)
6) brakes
7) whatever you want

still not making any sense dude. 1st off, 240sc??? loof??? Speek Engrish much??? What do you mean I dont know my years yet? Are you telling me that they didnt make a 240sx in 96-97?? Im not asking for you all to Hand me my fully built car, but this being a forum and all, I would like your USEABLE input on building my car. I took shop for 6 years in school. Hand me a domestic motor, blindfold, and some duct tape and you can come pick up your 300+ NA engine in about 8 hours. (That was a HUGE pun by the way, dont eat me on that please) but im saying that I know cars. There is nothing wrong with my post. To everyone else who has put good posts, thanks alot. To everyone else who has bull**** comments, Lay down and wear it!!!!! DMC- Thanks, your last post helped. Was that so hard?? One love man.

KwKouki: first
you wont be the only or the first. i guarantee you there are other drifters, drifting is all over and i know a few FL guys. you wont be first. there have been guys (espeically in FL) who have known of/do/etc SRs, drifting and so forth.its pretty popular already. your 2 years too late. sorry bro
want to drift:
i suggest get a 240sx.
learn STOCK SETUP for a while until people start to ask you"do you have LSD?" when you get to that point, start modifying
learning on a 'built' car wont improve your skill, only make your skilll harder to accomplish. learn stock you'll learn far more then someone w/ coilovers and a SR etc..
learn stock rock the stock and be skilled at it. then upgrade.
alsl your post here:
ok fine
1) Does the KA engina hold up when its high on miles.
yes some people have kas with over 200k mile mine has 150 and runs perfect.
2) How to setup my car to drift.

3) Any other tips for building my car
dont rice it out
your way F'in off.
1) yes KA rocks at all times if you maintain it well
2) its about the DRIVER NOT THE CAR
3) dont rice it out? youhave no idea of some of the cars in japan, make you sh*t your pants if you see some of the 'rice'. dont believe the hype.
tips? learn stock.

Yeah, but the thread is titled "first in Key West". The only thing down here is civics with a special edition foldgers coffee exhaust and APC stickers on ford escorts. Oh the plastic intercooler effect has been seen around here. There are very few tuners in the Keys. Theres a turbo eclipse that I used to beat the nuts out of on a daily basis and a ss camaro that I used to play with until he made my car puke (blew a oil gasket racing him) Not to mention the mid-6 sec Cyclone Mustang that lives in Key Largo "as seen on espn and pro stock events. Other than that, if you have a CAI and strobes on your car, your a hardcore tuner. Pathetic huh??? I think theres a drift club in Tampa Fl But thats like 300 hours away from Key West. (again sarcasim.)

ah i c
i'll find out if my friends know anyone in key west. cool, thanks for schooling me on FL geography
anyways, definately LEARN STOCK
why? you learn ALL ABOUT the car that way
you dont need LSD to drift well
you can do a LOT w/o it
same goes for coilovers. our friend just found that out when another EXCELLENT 6+ yr drifter took the car out w/ them as passenger. you can do A LOT on stock.
it might not look as cool
but looks=rice
its all about driver control. car control. its all about YOU.

sounds like youare more into the poser part of drifting
building a drift car and driving a 'drift' car are two completely different things
trust me, when you drift and you drift HARD your car wont look like that for more then a month. believe me. i've seen it. my friends car nice kouki s14 has some DEEP to the metal chips on it from going off track drifting in 3rd gear. car is (well, was) pristine clean. now its got some scars. no need to cry. its part of drifting.
drift cars dont last long. use it. abuse it. love it.
you want to build a drift car? good for you, good luck at importshowoff/HIN
you want to DRIFT a CAR? that, i like. looks dont matter. skill does.

ehh, what if jdm rice tells you your car needs to be stiffer and has a severe understeering problem? (and you noticed that to begin with)? and if JDM rice told your car was not very responsive and feels like it absorbs weight tranfser? (which i sort of noticed as well)

Please dont make me call you anal. Whats to say that you cant have a nice looking and driving car. I live on a 3x2 mile rock. I wont be drifting that much. Maybe around the publix parking lot and a couple places on the mainland but thats it. Im not posing, but I will definately be on Duval street having people goo over my car more than putting it through a track.

Theres alot of twisting roads up the Keys. Theres a road before Big Pine that stretches for like 5 miles. Nothing on it, just twisting roads. Thats where I learned to fishtail my formula Oh and the tourists are like autoX cones.

yea i was bein a dick last night i appologize, and i dont know **** about driftin so dontlisten to any of my advice(which i r arely give) but please research this question first there are so many newbs that want to "drift" just to show off it seems like. an dall i was tryin to say is if you're not willing to do the work and take the time to look up this stuff chances are you'll never do what u want to do anyway.

I TOTALY agree. Ive seen kids with kits and nice deep dishes first time drifting, destroy almost 1k in parts if not more. And after hitting many curbs and breaking and bending stuff i have maybe fixed like 150$s worth of stuff.
IMO, for a starting drifter, your best friend are eather steelys or stock wheels, why you say,
#1 You break them, but whoop, go to the junkyard, get some new ones
#2 Their SUPER strong and rarely will you bend it .
If you have a show car set up for drift, its still a show car.
If you have a drift car, more than likely depending on where you are in your skill level your car will be all dinged or banged up, and others like you will understand.
My 2 cents

Drifting is show, like ballet.. Takes skill taht is obtained through LOTS of practice. understand what they are telling you. Dousan is trying to say ANY car is a "Drift car" in the right "Drifters" hands.
It's cool if you wanna make your car look like that car above. Thats a nice looking car. But that is not what a "Drift car" looks like. Drift cars often look nice, but are beat up. Bumpers hanging off, dents, and scratches, etc.
What it appears you want, is a sweet lookin 240, that you can do donuts, and powerslides in to show off. You don't want a "Drift car"
The 240 and firebird are very different cars. The firebird is about brute force. The 240 is about Balance. (not saying I haven't seen several brute force 240's lol)

Ya, you all are right about the real-show part. I have seen what real drift cars look like. Beleive me, I will keep all my stock parts when I do get to drift. Im keeping the car stock for a while to learn everything. The junkyard rims, ugly tires, and plenty of zip ties will be in my warehouse. As well as the bomex kit, 17in deep-lips, and wing will also be in my warehouse. Now that I think about it, I will be posing most of the time just because of where I live.

Hey!
Well to let you know about the S14a/b(240SX) years, that the 96 and 97 u be thinking about r diffrent. The 95-96(S14b) have diffrent Head lights and Tail lights from the 97-98(S14a) If your planing for looks I go with the 97-98(s14a) because of the Shark looking head lights and tail lights. If not go for the S14b(95-96)
ANd one more thing to add; the A/B means (A)After97-98 and (B)before95-96 And for looks, "MOST" people who own S14b(95-96) do the S14a(97-98) Head lights and Tail conversion for the SLik Sharky looking lights...
Well peace Out.... O_o

nguyen- I know that the headlights are different. I really dont mind either headlight. I really didnt notice the different tails though. Thanks for pointing that out. If I get a 96 or earlier and end up wanting the "sharky" look, a pair of custom eyelids would cure that. It all comes down to whats available.
EvilS14- Thats why I want a 240sx. noone has them down here. I have seen a black one with a loud exhaust and a white stock one pop up from time to time. I dont think they live here though. When I got my formula, It was one of the few that were down here. Mine was the only one modded. When I let it loose, f-bodies started popping up like mad. I was ****ed. I like being different. Time for a new canvas

Why do people say a and b? its so confusing seeing as A come before B in the alphabet. Just say Zenki (first) and kouki (last) OR S14 before m/c and after m/c. But hey thats just my opinion. Oooh! Or since the S14 were not in production, with not as many variations, just say 95 S14, 97 S14, etc.

WOW I posted this a while back. I am the proud owner of a 93 se coupe. I am loving this car. I am having soooo much fun driving it. I am very happy with my purchase (only 1500) I am yet to learn how to drift, but I am tearing it up in the autoX. Anyways, here I am with a black 240 and ready to tear it up going sideways.
