Does having etched vin #s on glasses really act as a good theft deterrent?

wondering if anyone thinks or has found it to be actually useful

It's only ~$20, I don't think there is a hot market for 240sx glass. Generally it's a good idea for cars that are high theft for parts(Civic/Accord/Camry).

The reason to get it on all cars is that some insurance company give a discount for test deterrent devices. VIN etching is usually listed or counted as an anti-theft device. The discount will be greater then the fee usually within the first 6months.

You're an idiot. VIN etching is done solely because the more matching numbers on a car, the more likely the parts/the car itself will trace back and the less likely someone will steal it. It's not like a thief sees it he breaks every window out, then drives around in it looking cool.

Yeah, They steal the car then cut the glass out and sell it as replacement parts. Do you people forget why you go to the junkyard?

Glass etching is not done as a theft deterrent for the glass, it is used to make the car harder to sell if it is stolen. Because the theives have to replace all the glass. There is no glass market out there lol As per wiki: "VIN etching is a countermeasure to motor vehicle theft (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motor_vehicle_theft). It most commonly involves the use of astencil (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stencil)and glass (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glass) etching paste to etch a vehicle's vehicle identification number (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vehicle_identification_number) (VIN) onto the windshield (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windshield) and windows. Thieves (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thieves) would need to replace the glass before selling the stolen vehicle, thus reducing or eliminating their profit." Vin Etching is used alot in Canada as well, alot of the 240's that come from there will have etched glass.

my car already had it.. didn't think it was an added option.

at the dealerships I've seen them use a ink pad and some pink fluid to "etch" it to the glass
