View Full Version : Moving... What to do with drift car?

To make a long story short, I’m moving from Massachusetts to California in January and I’m trying to decide what to do with my drift car. It’s not very streetable and I have no place to keep it and no truck or trailer to tow it around in CA.
This is the car:

This is the build thread:
http://zilvia.net/f/tech-talk/174653-240sx-coupe-track-car-build.html
I basically have 3 options:
Let it sit in my friends garage in PA. (where it is now)
Sell it as is
Part it out
I’ve spent so much time and money on the car and barely driven it. I don’t want to sell it, but I have no idea when/if I’ll be back or if I’ll ever be able to afford to bring it out to California.
The motor, trans, and seats belong to my friend. I can sell them with the car, but obviously I’ll have to pay him for those parts. Also, the motor currently is leaking oil from the front timing cover. It starts, runs and drives, but I wouldn’t drive it far and definitely no track action with the leak.
I’ve taken the car to 2 events for a total of 10 runs. I know I’ve spent way more money on it then I can hope to get if I sell it. However, if I sell it, I’ll be able to buy something else down the road. Since I don’t own the motor, I don’t think I’ll get much parting it out. I’m thinking about putting it up for sale as a “testing waters” kinda thing, but before I do I wanted to get some opinions from people.
What would you do if you were me and why?
What do you think the car is worth as is? With the leak fixed?
If I did part out, what do you think I could get for the bare shell?

Where in California?
I say keep it and keep it to the track. If you are moving to a house with a garage, then keep it in there.
Not worth to sell it after all the work you put into it and you're just moving, that's all.
Since you'll have an out of state license plate and license, you should be fine from Refs for a while at least.

Destroy it.
It's only a "drift car", so that is what will eventually happen anyway.
Save yourself some time.

they shouldnt be able to touch you unless ur doing something stupid...from what i heard, if you have out of state plates they cant touch you for emissions or anything cause other states may have diffrent rules about it

I'm moving into an apartment in San Diego county (North of the city). I doubt I'll have a garage, I'm just hoping for an assigned spot for my daily.
Most likely the car will stay where it is. I'm just trying to see what I might be able to sell it for so I know if it's worth considering.

Part it out, sell it, build a new one here.
California is infested with S-chassis.

In California you only have 60 days to register your car here. CHP has a out of state tag tip line to catch you....
part it out and sell it.
you've already got problems, and will only get more problems if you drive a non daily-able car on california streets
those cops gonna give you lots of trouble.

Just sell it, it'll make life alot easier on you. You can find plenty of 240's around here, there not hard to come by. And you can get parts left and right, there's all kinds of shops.

how much for the shell? PM me
noname7198

I'm not sure how much I'd want for the bare shell. It would depend on what I could get for everything else. If people are seriously interested you can PM me an offer and I'll think about it. I'd like to get around $14-15K for the whole car.
The motor was just rebuilt with arp main & head studs, arp rod bolts, cometic head gasket new oem rings, bearings, and gaskets, professionally honed, decked, cleaned and assembled. All it needs is a bigger turbo, injectors and a tune to be a competition ready drift car.

Yeah just part it out, and get rid of it.
Whatever you don't sell just bring it over here and buy one here.
Or part it out, keep whatever you wanna put on a Cali car and be done with the whole deal, it's a pretty simple affair.

Let it sit in your friends garage. You'll be back. All these California members just told you how much it sucks to have a modified car there.

Just move down there, get yourself settled, then when you have a clear head... figure out to do from there. Don't make a decision you'll regret just because you're worrying about it now.

what you need to do is get some bigger/wider rims haha but seriously rent a trailer and bring it down. Doubt you can sell it for much and it wont equal the time and money invested into the car. Unless you plan to get out of the car scene, then sell it and take your buddies out to lunch cause for the price your gunna get for that car is how much it cost to eat down here. IT AINT CHEAP LIVING IN CALI!

honestly there'd probably be a bigger demand/mo' cash for it in cali. or just throw it on ebay.

Don't get rid of it. If you've got the money to move across the country, I'd assume you have the money to just pay to have the car shipped across the country. It should cost about 7-800 bucks, I would think. That's really not that bad, since it sounds as if you'd lose way more than that by parting out that car. Plus, think of all the work you'd lose.

why would you give up all that work you put into the chassis?
give the engine back to your friend.
drop a stock ka in it with emissions everything, etc. on the cheap. fix anything else cali doesn't like.
take it to cali and do all that cali car registration inspection whatever stuff.
put new motor in when you have the money.

It's almost six months until I leave, so I have plenty of time to figure it out. I'm not really worried about it now. I’m basically just testing the waters to see if it’s worth selling. Right now I’m thinking it’s not worth selling. I love this car and drifting so I think I should keep it, but at the same time, I’d like to buy a more streetable car and actually drive it. I rarely use the car now and it's only 300 miles away. I don't know how I'll feel when it's 3000 miles away. The other issue is that I'm not sure how long I'll be there this time.
Here's where I'm at:
I’m finishing college in December and taking a part time, most likely unpaid, internship in Socal. The internship could be anywhere from a couple months to a year or more and I don't know if I'll be able to get a job there after. After the internship if I don't work for that company I'll either stay there or move to L.A. with a friend and look for a job or move back here and go back to my current job.
With all the uncertainty about what I’m doing over the next year or so and not having a steady job anymore I don’t think I’ll have the money to get it out there or store it (at least not right away).
I actually have been looking for a ka motor. Aside from having to redo all the wiring that could be a cheap way to get it running. I’m just not sure how much more money I want to spend on this car knowing I’m leaving. Even with a stock KA I can't imagine it would pass any state inspection.
And about the wheels.. I have wider rims for it, I just put the small ones on since it’s easier to spin the smaller tires on the stock motor.

hm...sell it,part it out,keep it,LOL GIVE IT TO ME AS A GIFT ..hehe JK/JK
if i was in you position i would just bring it to cali. use one of those Uhaul trailers to bring it with you. if its something you spent alot of time and money in building, then you should just bring it with you. i would regreat it, if i parted or sold the car

Ditto. I could never imagine putting my heart and soul into a car then selling it. I'd drive it to the ground first.
