ok im looking to buy a 1998 bmw 528i but im skeptical about their reliability ect. i have owned alot or car makes but never bmw never even had one in the family. the only reason im looking at bmw is that i like how they look and they are a tank and safe. i have a little girl to take care of so no little civics ect hence the bmw idea.

please no die hard nissan for life people telling me to get some sort of nissan.

lbmotoring has a 01 528i 5speed, really nice. he picked it up in 07, i dont recall hearing him having any problems. He gave me a link a long time ago i cant remember it, but you can pick up nice quality M5 replica bumpers, moldings real cheap like under $200 a bumper. Than upgrade the headlights and tail lights to newer model. He dropped his on coilovers and M3 CSL style wheels i think, nice and flush daily driver..

At first it didnt look too good, just borring, then he put those m5 body parts on it and slammed it and it made it look really sporty.

The first of the E39 generation 5 series are all bad news.
BMW had some wiring demons in the cars.
You are right about the cars being safe and built like tanks....

However they are very tempermental with the electronics... ie jump start the car the wrong way and you fry the general body control module, then you have interior lights that come on like ghosts, and intermitent parasitic draws...etc

If you are going to get a 99 and up E39 - those problems were worked out.

Hope that helps.
Thanks,
Robert

haha i have to agree too. I have an E36 and that car is a piece of shit. Wiring issues, window regulators and motors breaking, key works when it feels like it. I kno its not a 5 but from my experience, stick with only M series.

I own a 2004 330i with a ZHP package and I still love my nissan. but good choice for a BMW I'm not crazy about the 7 series. I'd go with the 540i since the 528i is basically a 330i engine in a 5 series body. Why a 1998 go with 2000 and up at least?

+1 and if you do, go with a 97 or 98 540i.

The 97 and 98 540i are non vanos, have the larger and longer intake runners, and more hp/tq then the 99+ models.

I love the 98 540i I have, just be prepared to do the coolant system(hoses, exp tank, radiator, water pump).

Appreciating a Mágicos Maduro 5, while listening to Ludwig van Beethoven, and calling in a stock trade, all while travailing 155mph with the AC blasting is WIN!

Seriously I can't even tell you how many times I have been well over 140mph without even trying. I swear these cars were made specifically for the autobahn.

Back country roads you really start to feel the weight, but even with just the OE sport suspension I can hold my own. Just have to drive it different then say a miata. I would suggest some aggressive pads though. I really need to pick some up, or do an M5 brake swap. lol

M5 lsd swap is all the car really needs. I want one bad, just trying really really hard to stay away from dumping money into this car as I have way to many other projects as it is.

I have a 94 325is (E36) and I love it. I've had it since December, and I've had zero problems with it. The car runs great and I change the oil every 5K miles. I know that all BMW's are known to have pretty intense electrical problems, but the only thing I've experienced so far is the passenger window not wanting to go all the way up all the time.

I've been really happy with it so far, and there are websites out there that sell BMW parts for pretty cheap.

comfort relay causes windows to go out (e36). Its under dash, easy to replace.

Water pump took me 2 hours on mine.

with the m52 you have be prepaired to replace some stuff with the coolant system. But I love my bmw... even though its technically not mine anymore. Good gas mileage, good power, blah blah blah.

decent cars over all.

Yeah, the engines are solid, but the cooling is brittle.

So upgrade that shit with metal or something that isn't as old and doesn't suck as much.
